A FEW MORE TIPS From Virginia And Jerry

Reducing Static Cling
Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and - voila - static is gone. By Pam, Maple Rapids, NH
___________________________

Measuring Cups
Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill it with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry the cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out. By Kim, Goldsboro, NC
___________________________

Reopening envelope
If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Voila! It unseals easily. Mary, Lockhart , TX
___________________________

Condition Your Legs
Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's a lot cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way to use up the conditioner you bought but didn't like when you tried it in your hair... By Kerry , Canada,
___________________________

Get Rid of Ants
Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it "home," & can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains. But it works & you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed! By Teresa, SD.
___________________________

Take baby powder to the beach
Keep a small bottle of baby powder in your beach bag. When your ready to leave the beach sprinkle yourself and kids with the powder and the sand will slide right off your skin.

Issue 39 THE FREEDOM OF TRAVELLING IN AN RV

News of the week of 30 September

Hi All: WOW! What a great way to spend a week. We spent the past few days visiting family and friends while parking in their driveways. John and I do not dry camp often but it is great that we have the convenience of being self-contained. We love to sleep in our own bed and use our own shower and have everything available without dealing with living out of suitcases. As you can see I am still in love with the freedom of this fantastic lifestyle.

OUR WEEK IN REVIEW

The Diary went out late but I did take SUNDAY morning off while visiting niece Cathy and hubby Rick to post it. Start to finish takes me about 6-7 hours so when we are with friends it is sometimes difficult to fit it in. We did take time on Sunday to enjoy lunch at the Anchor restaurant in Arnprior’s newest truck stop. Great setting and tasty meal - one more time. Their specialty is a decadent bakery – too bad that tasty stuff is off limits for me now. Saturday evening daughter Kayla and friend Jason joined us for dinner and on Sunday daughter Shaundra and friend Russ spent the evening visiting after they completed a successful day of hunting.

Early MONDAY morning we were on the move again towards Frankford near Trenton to spend another night in the driveway of friend Eileen and hubby Tom. Eileen and I joined the Air Force the same day in Sep 1960. Both our names began with the letter M so we were roommates on several of our early postings. We also changed addresses the same day for about 5 postings and we both eventually ended up being Dental Assistants – so this past visit was most interesting. On many occasions Eileen came home with me to Ottawa and I joined her family in Niagara Falls. This 24-hour visit was definitely not long enough - we will have to extend it next time.

TUESDAY morning we headed down the road for a two-day driveway visit of my sister Diane and hubby Don - in the nearby town of Trenton. Niece Lianne and hubby Mark and their kids, also live in Trenton – their home is our official home address. We had a great catch-up 2-day visit – these two just returned from 10-days in Nova Scotia with two more sisters – so we had lots of catch-up to do. It is so good to park in driveways for family visits.

THURSDAY morning it was time to once again move on. The colours were so beautiful in that area – guess we missed their peak by about a week but it was a picturesque drive from the Ottawa area, through Toronto and on to London. The sun was brilliant and traffic was extremely light the entire route.

We had made an appointment at our RV Dealer in London – Forest City RV – to have a preventive maintenance propane check (it has been 3-years since our last check and with all the RV Fires that have been reported recently we wanted to be sure ours was working as it should be – we passed!!!) They also fixed the swivel attachment on the driver’s chair. It quit a month ago and the dealer had problems finding a replacement part, so tech Jim added a modified version so I can again rotate the chair for extra seating and to set up my steering wheel table.

Next stop was to return to our park for 3-more days. On Monday 1st October, we move to Breamer Valley RV Park 5-miles north of Woodstock – it is a 55+ retirement park with very friendly residents – more on that location later. Our seasonal contract will be up at our present campground that is closer to London. However with all that happened this summer when the owner rented our contracted, fully paid site out to another RVer while we were gone for 6-weeks has left a very bad taste in our mouth. Paying him another penny to extend our stay here for even one day was very unappealing. At least on this return, no one was on our site or using our power.

FRIDAY we ran from early morning to late afternoon taking care of routine errands such as doctors appointments, picking up mail, dropping off Rx’s for our winter supply of drugs and an order my Botox for a mid October appointment plus restocking the larder with groceries. Just goes to prove that not all the days we spend as F/Ters are exciting.

FINAL THOUGHTS

And guess what? It is SATURDAY again. We also have a very busy week coming up and since we plan to depart Canada on the 17th our next few weeks will be busy. We wish all Canadians a Very HAPPY THANKSGIVING next weekend. It is the last long blast of the summer for those of us on this side of the border. Must go for today. To all those who will soon be heading out – please ‘Travel Safe and stay away from those Orange Barrels and Road Gaters’. P&J

Issue 38 NEWEST BEST FRIENDS ARE EVERYWHERE

News of week 21st September

P&J's Weekly Diary has been published weekly since 2001

______________________________________________

Hi All: What a fantastic week we have had. We met so many neat people. I frequently relay to RVers that we meet so many ‘Newest Best Friends’ mainly because we RVers have so much in common. Well this past week we met a different group of ‘Newest Best Friends’. The common thread in this relationship was – over the years all the Ex-sailors at the HURON Reunion served in the Cdn Navy on one of the three HURON ships. We had a super time from start to finish. I am not sure when this Diary will actually reach everyone. I started it on Friday but for the next 5 days we are parking in driveways of friends and family – of course that mean a lot of socializing. Soooo I am not sure if I will even get my Dish up at every stop. Just know I’m thinking of you whenever I get this out.

OUR WEEK in Review

Sunday 16th we left London for an overnight stop at the new Flying J in Napanee, Ontario. What a quiet spacious stopping spot. Traffic is low in that area and the RV parking spaces are long – although fuel/propane in that part of Ontario was higher than it is in London. After a peaceful sleep we headed to one of our favourite stamping grounds - the Ottawa Municipal Campground on Highway 417 at exit 138 for a 5-day stop. I grew up in Ottawa and we used to come here often when my sister Shirley was alive, but I forget there was so many trees in this city. Thankfully the office accommodated us with a site where both our Dishes (roof TV and Internet Tri-pod) reached the satellite.

This park is on the outskirts of this busy city but the office provides info on driving to the above ground Bus Transpo Pick-up Centre or to the nearby Lincoln Fields Shopping Centre to board the bus to downtown. Ottawa has a special dedicated above ground bus lane that guarantees rapid transport to city centre – this is an alternate to a city subway system. Those without a car can take a taxi to bus Transpo Centre for $8.00. Only problem with this great stop is the sites are only 2-way hook-ups. Cost is $32.00 per night. Taking transit is a good idea because rush hour travel to city centre is very slow going.

FANTASTIC REUNION - this gathering was for Canadian Navy personal that served aboard the HURON http://www.hmcshuronassociation.com but many branches of all Cdn/USA Forces host similar events – search Google.com for your association.

Events got off to a great start with registration and Meet and Greet - our Goodie Bag was jam packed with numerous neat things. Early Tuesday morning everyone gathered for an official wreath laying Memorial Service at the Cenotaph complete with a Ships Company Muster, a piper and bugler – dress was the wearing of Medals that adorned their blazers. Official officer dignitaries from the Embassies of France, Korea, Russia, United Kingdom, USA and the National Defence Headquarters participated in the wreath laying. These are all countries that the HURON intertwined with – a very moving ceremony. Got some great pictures but since I forgot my digital I had to resort to a throwaway camera – I again forgot how inconvenient it is to go back to print film. Hope to get them scanned and uploaded soon.

Following the Memorial Service our buses took us to the modern expansive Canadian National War Museum. (819-776-8600). This Museum is an amazing place. The museum sections are laid out in chronological order in four separate sections beginning with Canadian battlegrounds of earlier times to 1885; the South African and First World War 1885-1831; The Second World War of 1931-1945 and the last was the Cold War/Korean War and Peacekeeping from 1945 to present. This entire museum was a very informative, spacious and beautifully laid out presentation. I was extremely impressed with the moving and emotional V-E and V-J displays highlighting the wars end. After lunch in the cafeteria the bus dropped us back at the hotel. We then headed to the park, but the crew ventured off to dinner and the SLOTS. Gag gift exchanges and door prizes brought that evening to a close.

An early Wednesday morning Meeting informed members of what is happening plus a tasty evening DINNER/DANCE kept everyone in an upbeat mood. Our Breakfast Thursday morning brought this fun filled 4-day event to a close. We met so many wonderful ‘Newest Best Friends’ that we really look forward to next year’s event in Woodstock. We expect to be in that community next summer so it will be fun to participate in planning events that are not RV Related. (Those who served on the HURON Destroyers – why not join us. Check out the website above).

MORE GOOD FRIENDS & Final Thoughts

After breakfast, Auld Lang Sine and fond farewells we took the scenic route west to the park, past my childhood home. That drive brought back a flood of pleasant memories. We even drove past my childhood home – took a picture of course.

Friday we drove to the popular interesting PJ’s Restaurant in Arnprior to lunch with several high-school chums. No matter how much time passes, it is always a joy to play catch-up with these friends who made our days in school so much fun. Thanks so much Gayle for making it happen and to Bob, Ruth, Penny and Shirley for joining us. Several of us also worked at Woolworth’s in the days before Wal*Mart became popular.

Saturday we departed for Arnprior to niece Cathy & Rick’s driveway. Saturday afternoon these two participated in a community Horseshoe play-offs and Cathy’s FINAL RINGER won her and her partner the Championship trophy. Congratulations kid!!! After a fantastic day of socializing – daughter Kayla and friend Jason came over for dinner – it was time to turn in. Soooo here it is Sunday morning and I am still trying to get this Diary out. Daughter Shaundra and friend Russell will be joining us for supper tonight and we head out on Monday for the Trenton area. Thanks so much for the hospitality Cathy & Rick – it has been a great visit. Life is good in the McD house – hope it is the same in yours. Happy Travel all. P&J

REHEAT PIZZA
Heat up leftover pizza in a non-stick skillet on top of the stove, set heat to med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza. I saw this on the cooking channel and it really works. From Mona, Orlando, FL

Easy Devilled Eggs
Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up. Add remainder of ingredients for devilled eggs, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag away when done easy clean up. From Janet, Killeen. Tx

NOTE From Peggi if you cut the eggs in half through the middle (instead of lengthwise) and slice a bit off the pointed area, they will stand up on a plate and take up less space – great for a large potluck gathering.

Expanding Canned Frosting
When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to frost more cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You also eat less sugar/calories per serving. From Kathy, Mesick, MI

Reheating Refrigerated Bread
To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster. From Dave, Camden, DE

Hi All: I love getting ready to hit the road. We have had an exceptionally busy travel summer and it has been fun. Tomorrow we plan to stop at the Flying J at Napanee and Monday we continue to our old stamping grounds – Ottawa-Nepean Municipal Campground on highway 417 on the outskirts of Ottawa. I grew up in Ottawa and although we no longer have a lot of family living in that city, we love to return to this incredible place. Our reason to head to Ottawa this trip is for a Navy Reunion for John’s last ship the Huron. We will enjoy several visits with family and friends nearby plus a few more during our way back. It should be a fun two weeks before we again return to the London area. I am in heaven because we will once again enjoy a new backyard for a bit. Will fill in exact details over the next few weeks.

I am cold today. Fall is definitely in the air. No sun, breezy and cold temps. John even put on long pants. However this morning was major cleaning day in case we get visitors while we are away so our hard work helped us stay warm without the furnace. I love many parts of fall days but these cloudy, cold ones leave a LOT to be desired. Oh well, guess it is part of life and since we head south in another month we shouldn’t have to deal with the cool temps for long.

OUR WEEK IN REVIEW

As a result of my input in the story from the Globe and Mail that I mentioned last week - even though my website was not mentioned - I have received several contacts from it including an email from a Nova Scotia freelance writer asking for input for an article she
is writing on the Maritimes. I am proud that she asked. It will be published in a magazine that is distributed on the many ferryboats that connect ports in Canada’s eastern provinces. For the most part we stayed close to home the majority of the week – except of course other than running routine errands.

However on Thursday we decided to became a kid again at the London Western Fair on Seniors Day. We haven’t been to a Fair for years. Plans to join friends changed so John and I ventured off on our own, we had a ball. A FREE Grandstand Show featured The ‘Nylon’s (‘80’s era) was a great highlight and a good trip down memory lane.

We arrived at the Fair early so crowds were limited. It was such a joy to walk through the buildings and see all the neat stuff on the market these days that is directed to everyone. Usually at shows, we only see stuff that appeals to RVers. On our walk through the grounds it was mind boggling to see how the rides had progressed over the past 20 years. Too bad I was not a 20 year old again. Some of them looked like fun and challenging. Hopefully I’ll have pictures posted soon. Even the food has changed over the years. Yes, the high calorie high fat variety was available, but we enjoyed a tasty vegetarian pita - I am happy to report it was not the only healthy choice. Guess the world - at least with reference to food choices is finally changing. Cool

NOTEWORTHY POINTS

RECALLS Of Late Model RV’s does not seem to go away but sometimes it applies to trucks and cars as well. I frequently receive notices through a Google Daily RV Alert but this link below came from the RVTravel.com weekly newsletter – a very informative publication. There are too many to highlight but if you have a fairly new vehicle especially a motorhome (some date back to 2003) you should take a look to see if your unit is affected. August Recalls

If it is not possible to click this link please periodically check with your dealer and/or the manufacturer. Each month the list seems to grow longer. These recalls are repaired at no-cost, so it is wise to keep on top of them.

Out Of Country Medical – do not leave home without it!!!!

Canadian Snowbirdsit is time to think about your out of country medical coverage. Americans coming north should add similar insurance before you leave too but most of you will not go till spring/summer ‘08. Although medical in Canada may cost a bit less it still costs money – insurance rates are much less than any hospital visit.

Please do not go south (or north) without Insurance – even for a day trip. John’s week in the hospital plus his week as an outpatient last November cost the insurance company $45,000. He had no heart by-pass or any other serious problems – just a bad infection they could not find the cause or how to get rid of it.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

#1 We decided to again go with CARP - (Canadian Associated Retired Persons) - no membership required). Their rates have continued to be low this year. We have been with CARP for five years and this policy works best for us. As long-term customers we receive several discounts. (Early bird rates, couples and repeat customers). We are covered for $5 million. CARP are only one of the few companies that do not insist all meds be stable for 6-months – for instance BP meds only need 3-months stabilization since your last change.

If any Cdns are members of the Public Service Health Care Program (PSHCP from the federal government) – CARP can raise the original few hundred thousand (not enough to pay for a major problem) up to $5 million for the first 40 days of FREE travel - top up insurance is available from there. This upgrade is under $100.00 depending on your age. CALL 1-877-566-6805 to check out your policy. They deal with the McLennan Group and Global Excel, but I have no website.
___________________________

#2 Good Sam now has a great medical coverage for Canadian Members at reasonable rates. Call 1 888 237-1177 for a quote. Some pre-existing conditions apply and you can buy insurance for one day or many. GS CANADIAN TRAVEL HEALTH INSURANCE FROM GOOD SAM ALSO INCLUDES a FREE TWO-DAY trip across the border. Click Here

NOTE: This same site also sells insurance to Americans visiting Canada - Scroll down to U.S. Travel Health Insurance.
___________________________

#3 I also received a notice from CANADA'S SNOWBIRD 'Medi-Quote' with their rates and info. When it comes to buying insurance it is such a personal experience that all I am doing is to provide you with a contact phone number and website. It is worth checking out each company as to how it applies to you and your medical history. 1-800-661-3098.
___________________________

#4 Another to check out is SANDERSON Travel Insurance – special benefit of Canada’s Explorer RV Club. For more info go to www.sandersontravelinsurance.com Call 1 877 226 8728. Available with and without pre-existing medical conditions but some stability may apply.
___________________________

#5 Depending on your age you also may find good deals at Many Canadian Banks. This over 65 usually do not qualify.
___________________________

#6 Other Companies such as Medox (I think that is its name) also top up PSHC, but I have no contact for them.
___________________________

#7 Prime Link is another choice - 800 509 5831 Ray Murdock is a broker Call – 519-884-5923
___________________________

In all cases it pays to shop around. Your medical situation, age, and meds, when they were last switched plus more items will contribute to the price that various companies charge. Some early bird cut-offs are the 14th Sep, but many go to the 30th of Sep. Some companies offer $200-$500 deductibles for a bit of a savings. This list is only a few suggestions - there are many more companies available.

I REPEAT IT PAYS TO SHOP AROUND TO FIND THE BEST FOR YOU. DO NOT LEAVE HOME WITHOUT INSURANCE. A SIMPLE ACCIDENT COULD DEPLETE ALL YOUR SAVINGS.
_______________________________

FINAL THOUGHTS

As the summer winds down we hope many of you are able to get out and still enjoy RVing. Add a sweater or two and take advantage of the great fall ahead, soon to be a colourful time of year. Happy travels and take care guys P&J

Issue 36, FALL IS IN THE AIR!

Diary published weekly since 2001

_____________________________________________________________

Hi All: We have been running every day this week, I really have been slacking off of working for a bit. However some days it meant we just took a drive through the beautiful countryside at this time of year. Everything is so peaceful – most tourists are gone and the extreme dry weather and high heat is a distant memory. Flowers going through towns are lush and the trees and fields in southwestern Ontario are so green. We also joined our niece Jane for lunch on Friday when we went to pick up our mail. She works in Stratford and since our mailing address is Mail Boxes Etc (now the UPS Store) in Stratford, making plans for a lunch date is a good match. Cool

I even took a complete holiday away from my computer last Sunday and Monday (other than addressing basic email) to work on fabricating crafts. It was Labour Day and this is the first time in years I took a real holiday other than our cruise last Feb. Since we will be in the Rio Grande Valley this winter, I decided to sell my creations at the park craft sales. However I have an ulterior motive for this. Remember when I relayed I had ran out of books at the RV School last June. Well we found 35 copies under the bed and I still have quite a few from my last order. Problem is I want to update RV Living in the 21st Century this winter. Not because it is out dated, but because it has a publication date of 2004 - on a Guide Book that is not good. I have little choice but to update it over the winter. Soooo that means I have to make a concentrated effort to sell the books I have on hand. I hope that by combining my books with my crafts I will eliminate most of them over the winter. Cool

NOTABLES THIS WEEK

One High Point this month was our Emission Control Test (Go Clean Ontario) that is required every two years (new vehicles get a 5-year reprieve). We also wanted our original 5-year old gas filter replaced. Steve’s Automotive in Woodstock, Ont 519-421-2313 www.stevesauto.ca came highly recommended. It is easy to understand why. The shop was so clean and they specialize in extra special personable customer service. Their service writers were well turned out in monogrammed shirts, the place was spotless - they even provided coffee in the waiting room - however John and I decided to walk to next door for an hour Wal*Mart ‘fix’. When we returned the mechanic was done, but part of their service is a complimentary car wash and the Grand Am was next in line. All this and a very reasonable cost to boot – what more can anyone ask for? Cool

____________________________

A week ago an ARTICLE APPEARED IN THE GLOBE AND MAIL. “You can take it with you”. Much of the info was from the Maritimes but I was happy thatmy quotes were also included www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20070829.wmotorhome29/EmailBNStory/specialTravel/home Although my input was only a small part of the column and my website was not mentioned, I have received several email requesting articles and writing contributions as a result. There was one error – we were in Lethbridge when I first talked to Geoff and I guess I neglected to relay we were from Ontario and on a return trip back from BC. However overall this one was a positive article so I am happy with it. Cool

_____________________________

Funny thing happened last week. Several of the RV’s that were here are part of the ‘TRAVELLERS GROUP’. These RVers keep to themselves and work at paving driveways or doing construction work. In some cases the work is rumoured to be substandard, so if you are contracting people for jobs around your home, be sure to ask for references and check them out with the Better Business Bureau. These families include small children and they generally live in huge, new, but little known brands of elaborate looking trailers. As a group, they are always dressed to the nines. When they left our park the fifths were so large that a regular tow-truck was called to move one of these long units to their next campground and future job site. Cool

What was funny is when they departed they left behind a hide-a-bed that was like new even though it had been outside for several months under the awning plus a classy round picnic table with umbrella and 4 chairs plus another set of four non-folding patio chairs with the lush cushions. I guess when they settle into a place, they buy these items at a discount store and they simply leave them behind when they depart. It did not take long for a family of park residents to remove these items from the vacated site so they could enjoy them on their patios. Sooooo, I am relaying this because if you are in a park where it looks like the Travellers are stopping for a bit. Be aware that when they change parks they may leave a few treasures behind. Cool

Frequently Diary recipients drop into the parks we are staying at. We love these visitors. This week PAT FROM NEARBY OWEN SOUND (where our storage is) stopped by for a visit during her trip to picturesque Pelee Island for a short getaway to explore the wonders of early fall. Pat is a courageous single RVer who has travelled Canada extensively and soon hopes to venture south for a month or two for her first southern winter getaway. I was able to put her in touch with another single good friend, Barb. She is an avid RVer who spends a lot of time on the move. Thanks so much for the visit Pat and your offer to share info Barb. Happy travels and good luck on the new Class A requisition Pat. Cool

WINTER PLANS - Most of you know that John and I worked the Tampa RV Show last January. While there we obtained several coupons for SUN RV RESORTS. Although they have a special on their website for a month at any of their many parks in Florida and Texas for $189.00 - we have several coupons for $149.00 per month (for every month but Feb) plus a few more at $169.00. If anyone would like these we’ll be happy to mail up to two to an address if you send me an email – no cost. When they are gone they are gone, but we hate to waste them. Most of these resorts are posh so even if you book a park blind it should be a great stop. www.sunrvresorts.com Cool

TIPS OF THE WEEK

REFERENCE TO THE TIP OF NOT SIGNING THE BACK OF YOUR CREDIT CARDS... I usually check all these tips out on www.snopes.com before I pass them on but since my signature never stays readable on my MC – and I have heard this tip before I passed it on without researching it. Although I do thank RV friends for passing tips on to me and I also appreciate the fact that my Diary readers keep me honest. Pearl spent considerable time researching this info for me.

IT IS MUCH BETTER TO SIGN YOUR CREDIT CARD!!! According to Scambusters.org http://www.scambusters.org/Scambusters80.html signing the card is the ONLY way to go. Pearl relayed that there were a number of websites that came up in her search but she found http://www.scambusters.org/creditcardfraudprevention.html was a great overall site. Check these sites out – they offer mega info on protecting your security. So I repeat, the best advice is to SIGN your cards when you receive them. I am sorry if I steered anyone in the wrong direction.

RV RECALLS. It seems that the list of recalls keeps increasing every month. Everyone should,(but especially those driving fairly new units) periodically check with your dealer and/or manufacturer to ask if any RECALLS have recently surfaced on your brand of RV (or tow vehicle). I read a report this week on this subject and now I can not find it, but a number of RV’s have recalls pending on everything from brakes to Dometic fridges, to incorrect tire inflation to insecure TV installation, to storage pod drawers below a slide-out not remaining closed during RV motion, and many more. These warnings also apply a wide variety of infractions to many models of cars. Just to be safe check your vehicles performance out with your dealer.

One last point has to do with RV INAURANCE for Fulltimers. I received a panic email this week about someone in Alberta who wanted to go F/T this winter and they were running into mega problems finding insurance. Fulltimers everywhere can be insured but sometimes it takes some shopping around. In the USA, many RV Clubs offer this type of protection and within Canada there are also several options. The main rule that applies to both countries is even if you are a Fulltimer, you still need to establish a legal residence for taxes, customs at the border, drivers licence, voting, census, medical coverage and much more. Many of us use a family member or a friend, but in reality the only person in this world with no fixed address is a crook. If you’re having problems, send me an email.

Issue 35, THE LAST HOLIDAY BLAST OF THE SUMMER!

Diary published weekly since 2001

_________________________________

Hi All: Sure hope most of you are away enjoying the long weekend and probably will not read this till at least Tuesday. Since this is the last blast for the summer most RV Parks are busy and the majority host dances, BBQ’s, special kids activities and much more so everyone can celebrate the holiday weekend. Cool

John and I are having a bit of a quiet weekend, but the park is quite busy with a number of events taking place. Since we have a slight bitter taste in our mouth with this park we will continue to do our own thing. We only have another month till our paid for season is over and then we move on to new horizons. When we RVers are dissatisfied we can leave by turning the key. Cool

THE ORIGINS OF LABOUR (LABOR) DAY

I was curious to know how this holiday began, so thanks to the web I discovered it apparently started in Canada (in 1872) with parades, picnics, strikes and meetings along with displays of uniformity – events continued into the 1880’s. The idea of a combined holiday effort quickly moved to the USA. Its origin was part of the advance of unions that dealt with strikes and a fight for a 9-hour working day etc. This is one of a very few holidays that is celebrated the same day in USA and Canada. Although almost every country in the world celebrates Labour Day, in many European countries it is commemorated on MAY DAY (1 May). Cool

JUNE 28, 1894 - The U.S.A. Congress passed an act making the first Monday of September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories including all Federal workers in all states. The individual States still had to enact their own legislation, which 31 States had done already by this time. JULY 23, 1894 - The Canadian Government enacted legislation making Labour Day, the first Monday of September of each year into a national holiday. Cool

One interesting story I found on the USA Origins of Labour Day begins over 100 years ago - www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/business/september96/labor_day_9-2.html
It was conceived by America's labor union unrest as a testament to their cause when President Grover Cleveland was in power – it was a reluctant election-year compromise. Cool

I found two more interesting sites that offered a different Canadian perspective on how this most appreciated holiday began in Canada – Prime Minister Sir John A MacDonald was in power at the onset. The history is somewhat sketchy but for a detailed explanation go to www.geocities.com/Heartland/Creek/9369/project7/labor.html or

WHY WE EAT OUT?

During several email and phone calls this week, friends/family relay that it seems as if we eat out a lot. We have a perfect explanation for this. Numerous Canadian RV parks charge visitors approximately $3.00 to come visit – for an hour or a day – with or without kids. We would love to drop in on friends for an afternoon visit, but we would rather not pay $3.00 each just to touch base – soooo it makes more sense to give it to the waitress to say thanks for good service. Plus if we meet in a restaurant, no one has to work at preparing a meal. The general purpose of the get-together is to socialize and touch base with our friends. Cool

By joining buddies for a meal in a restaurant we each can order what we want. Since many of our friends are on some kind of diet anyway and we all like to stay with our specialized foods, it usually works better to dine out. The overall cost is probably about the same. Also if we dine at someone’s house, we feel obligated to retaliate. On a nice day if we can eat outside that is great but before many of us RVers can set a table for four we have to reorganize the table – maybe move the computer or the craft projects etc. Cool

In the sunny south we frequently host enjoyable Patio Happy Hours with newfound friends, neighbours and wonderful snowbird buddies who also winter locally. But in those parks things are different. We spend time socializing when we take part in park activities, which also leads to fellowships. Also we eat out a lot for no other reason but entertainment. Plus Snowbird parks generally do not charge for visitors to stop by and secondly the climate is usually more adaptable for early afternoon gatherings. Cool

OUR WEEK IN REVIEW

For entertainment, besides shopping and picking up mail – Thursday we enjoyed a scenic relaxing drive to the St Thomas area. Neat city and we have not spent a lot of time there. Thought we may find some other campground options but most are too far from London – since we are in the city several times a week we want to be within 30 miles. However we did find another new to us super restaurant called the WAYSIDE at the corner of Highway 3 and 4. We met good friends Doug and Bonnie for lunch – they spent this summer near Chatham and St Thomas was halfway for both of us. What an awesome place!!! Menu prices were definitely on the low side, plus they featured a super buffet and everywhere we looked, the entire place promoted a touch of class, including cloth napkins at lunchtime. This tasteful image was even evident in the washroom where each stall was behind a decorative solid wood door. It is so much easier to catch up on conversation in a restaurant than it is through email. Cool

Funny thing happened while we were in Wal*Mart before lunch. John had his RCN (Navy) hat on and a guy stopped to talk to him stating that he had spent 28 years in the Air Force. When they really looked at each other they both almost flipped, because it was Terry – our good friend and Emcee at our wedding 25 years ago. His wife Sharon had been kinda staring at me saying to herself “I know that lady from somewhere”. These two now live in St Thomas but we did not know that, since we have been out of touch since the early 90’s. Definitely a small world isn’t it? What a pleasant surprise!!! Cool

WINTER PLANS

FYI I keep forgetting to share this info. We are leaving Canada approx 19 October and stopping for a few days in Chicago to visit John’s sister Marilyn and hubby Arnold and the family. Our leisurely trip will continue with relaxing stops (not all set as yet) along the way plus we hope to stay a few more days at SHILOH RV PARK, our Home C2C Park in Monroe, LA en route to the Rio Grande Valley. We are booked into the CASA DEL VALLE RV Park in Alamo, Tx from 7 Nov to 7 Dec. It is a Sun RV Resort and they have a special on their website for a month at any of their many parks in Florida and Texas for $189.00 (for every month but Feb). These resorts are posh so even if you book a park blind it should be a great stop. www.sunrvresorts.com Cool

FINAL THOUGHTS

Although there are only very few tourist places in this area that we haven’t already seen, we are having a great summer. I’m in the process of adding new columns to my website – my latest www.rvliving.net/RVLivingForumQuestionsAndAnswers.htm On the 16 September we will be heading to the Ottawa area for 10 days to visit friends, family and to attend a NAVY REUNION for John’s last ship (5 years) he was on – the ‘HURON’. It was taken out of service and sunk off of Vancouver Island last spring. He hopes to touch base with many of his sailing buddies. Should be fun times!!! Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone and please travel safe. Take care P&J Cool Cool Cool

TIPS OF THE WEEK

(Marianne and John sent me this tip by email. I share it now but they will also be in my next Packing Tips E-book. I still do not have enough input for another ebook as yet, but if anyone feels like sharing their favourites - please do. All contributors will receive a copy when it is in print.)

#1 Marianne relays a tip she heard while attending a recent rally in Alberta. One of the campers told us about a safety measure with respect to VISA or MasterCard. She had not checked it out, but it sounds like a good idea. This couple sharing the tip lives in a seniors complex in British Columbia and on several occasions during banking seminars presenters suggested that it is not wise to SIGN THE BANK OF YOUR VISA AND MASTERCARD! In the space for the cardholder's signature, it is suggested that owners should write, "See Driver's License for signature". Then, upon request from the merchant the owner can shows a personal photo ID – It also has signature on it, Maryanne felt that this was an interesting piece of advice to share!

#2 Her next hint should make RV Living a little easier. We have a small, 30 foot, Class C motor home - very comfortable and our home for eight to ten months each year. We have been going South for seven winters and have learned a few things - many of them from you, thanks so much...

Our shower/tub stall is very small, but I insist on taking my showers "at home". There is no door, only a shower curtain to keep the bath water in "its place" - in the tub. When showering I open the ceiling vent, which entices the "oh-so-cold" curtain toward the centre of the stall, where I stand. To remedy that situation I have taken a spring-loaded curtain rod, placing it between the curtain, and me - as far out as the shower stall will allow, with the curtain on the "other side/outside" of the rod. The bottom is still inside the tub. That gives me at least another 6 to 12 inches of additional room to move about. Best of all it works. Thanks Maryanne for sharing.

GOOD SAM OUT OF COUNTRY MEDICAL INSURANCE

Everyone who travels out of country NEEDS medical Insurance to cover unexpected emergencies. This same advice applies no matter what country you call home – even if you are going across the border for a daylong shopping trip. During an emergency situation - without insurance -you will have to pay the price up front and medical services can be very costly. FYI - John’s stay in the hospital last November ended up costing our insurance $45,000.00

Good Sam provides all members with two days of multi-trip TRAVEL HEALTH INSURANCE at no cost. Simply call 1–888–237–1177 to activate your coverage. Need coverage for more than 2 days? Call our friendly Licensed Insurance Advisors to "top-up" your coverage for the length of your trip. Do not leave home without it.

Your benefits include:
s Up to $2 million for the emergency treatment of an injury or sickness.
s Emergency Air Ambulance – evacuation to the nearest hospital.
s Emergency return home – gets you home in case you can't drive.
s Vehicle return home – returns your vehicle home if you can't.
s 24 hour, toll–free assistance.
