Tips and Pormo Portion - Issue 43

TIPS THIS WEEK ARE FROM THE ‘RV LIFE LESSONS’ SECTION of my E-Book RV Packing tips, RV Life Lessons, Easy Living Hints – 3 ebooks in one

RUBBER GASKET ON PROPANE

Last winter our RUBBER GASKET ON THE HORIZONTAL TANK-FILL VALVE stayed on the propane nozzle of the truck that filled our tank. Without this gasket it was impossible to add propane into our tank. We didn’t realize this gasket was missing until we tried to fill up with propane.

Thankfully the missing rubber ring is AVAILABLE FROM MOST PROPANE DEALERS; ours was replaced at no cost. Apparently it happens frequently – this was a first for us in 19-years.

OUR 16-YR OLD DACHSHUND (MADDIE) WAS ATTACKED BY FIRE ANTS.

Our senior 16 year-old four-legged ‘baby’ (now deceased) didn’t walk as well as she used to – occasionally she dragged her butt. One evening she apparently DISTURBED A FIRE ANT NEST. These critters only BITE if their nests are disrupted, but they STING for a long time. From personal experience I know the pain she felt.

She wouldn’t stop ‘screaming’ at bedtime. It was near midnight and I was beside myself trying to find a solution to relieve her distress. We thought the small bumps on her skin was ‘dirt’; but in a warm shower the water run-off turned RED. The ‘dirt’ was actually SCABS FROM FIRE ANT BITES. Following her shower, a liberal rubdown with cocoa butter cream finally settled her down and she finally fell asleep.

I called my breeder the next day searching for a solution – she suggested I always have a BOTTLE OF BENADRYL (LIQUID) ELIXIR – (A HISTAMINE BLOCKER) ON HAND TO COMBAT BUG BITES, BEE STINGS, ETC. She recommended one adult dose should reduce all swelling and discomfort - a children’s dosage can be doubled.

RED FRIDAY’S TO SUPPORT ALL TROOPS IN HARMS WAY

I received an email this week from an American Diary reader relaying that an email campaign has been launched to request that EVERYONE SHOULD WEAR ‘RED’ ON FRIDAYS to show support for service men and women fighting the Taliban. Canada undertook a similar program well over a year ago and it has met with great success. It lets the Troops know that those at home care. Even if you may not be in favour of the war it is still a good plan to follow. Why not ‘PASS THE SUPPORT ON’.

MEMBERSHIP CAMPING

In the past I have relayed the wonders of the inexpensive membership camping plan we have with our home park at SHILOH RV PARK, COAST TO COAST AND RPI. I will be happy to share the details of our special pricing with anyone if you send me an email to info@rvliving.net - RV Living.net is an affiliate - simply too much to cover here.

Today we checked into SHILOH RV AND TRAVEL RESORT IN MONROE LA for the first time. This pretty park borders a lake and also offers cabins, swimming pool, fishing, WIFI to some areas plus 30 and 50 Amp service and much more. High season for this park is in the Fall, so making reservations – even for members, is wise. Cost per night is still $8.00 but extras such as an upgrade to 50Amp etc is available for a minimal amount.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

INTERNET SATELLITE DISH

We are enjoying a very pretty corner site at Shiloh but it is a distance from the WiFi tower so one more time I am so happy that I have my own Internet system. Being on line 24/7 no matter where we are makes life so comfortable. Read my complete story of my fabulous Dish– or contact TECH MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS AND WIRELESS (TMCW): (Formerly 3i Communications) 1-705-878-1025 / 1-866-494-4801. Be sure to tell them Peggi asked you to call. Tech Mobile will ship to American customers

Just a note – John and I frequently work together to set the DISH up but several times lately due to circumstances beyond our control I have set the Dish up completely by myself – 99.9% of the time it is no big deal; a 5 to 10 minute task. If I run into problems I simply call Tech Mobile for help. Are you on line as you move around? You should be.

Thank You - Guardian Angels

Hi All: Our journey south has been wonderful so far – today it is even a great travel day. Mississippi has some beautiful highways lined with giant trees, although at times the surface has been ‘wavy’ (bumpy because the surface in not flat). Because this past week has been hectic I started this post on our way to a weekend at Shiloh RV Park, Monroe LA – our home C2C Park.

You may be curious about my title this week, but our Guardian Angels and the Good Lord have been travelling with us big time. On a bright and sunny Tuesday we left Litchfield at 8 AM and John turned off our propane as usual – all looked normal. When we stopped for a coffee break in a rest area at 10:30 on I-55. John noticed our propane tank was hanging near the pavement at the back end. We called our ERS and within a ½ hour TODD FROM INTERSTATE RESCUE (1-636-933-0330) began to prop the tank up to re-secure it. We only had to pay for the labour ($75.00) – ERS took care of the rest. Apparently two of the three bolts that support the tank (I can’t believe that is all that holds it) had sheared off. We are so grateful it did not hit the pavement – the tank was filled at our last stop so it was heavy. We will have it re-inspected in the Valley

However our troubles did not stop there – to add to this emergency – a nearby coolant line had developed a slow leak. How we are not sure – maybe a flying piece of bolt? Todd gave us the number of Freightliner 90 miles south. As it turned out they could not fit us in but the CUMMINS MID-SOUTH DEALER across the street booked us an appointment at 7:30 the next morning. The procedure was long because the coolant hose was difficult to reach. Techs began working on it at about 10 and were still going at 4:30. In my mind the $85.00 labour/parts had accumulated to at least a $1000. and higher.

You cannot imagine how happy we were when our entire invoice only totaled $409.00 plus they changed a fuel filter at no cost. They had run into a few diagnostic problems along the way and I think this is why we only paid or 4-hours labour. Whatever the reason, we were ecstatic and didn’t Q it. If any RVer with a Cummins engine is in this area do not hesitate to book service at CUMMINS MID-SOUTH, SIKESTON, MO (1-573-472-0303) - www.midsouth.cummins.com They will take good care of you.

One minor hick-up – when we tried to start the furnace and the water heater later Tuesday evening in the campground, neither would light. Guess it was just the shifting of the contents during the tank episode. By continually engaging the water heater switch it eventually clicked in. At least we do not have to add that repair to the list.

We added a positive plus to this day when we found a gem of a Good Sam Park at Sikeston, just 2-miles from the Cummins dealer. HINTON RV PARK is a ‘big rig dream park - easy on and easy off’ (1-573-471-1457 or 1-800-327-1457) at exit 67 on I-55. It had long pull thru’s, full hook-ups (50Amp) cable and WiFi (no need to set the Dish up which helped with our early appointment). Good Sam Rate was $23.40 and it was located a mile from the classy Lambert’s restaurant – home of the ‘throwed roll’. The park also saved our site for us the second night just in case we were at maintenance all day.

Sooooo the lesson in this is “SH-- Happens” it also reinforces the importance of thoroughly checking your rig at each stop. It is also refreshing to learn that when the dust settles all breakdowns do not spell complete disaster. We send a very special Thanks to the Good Lord and to our Guardian Angels for keeping us safe and/or helping us avoid a major catastrophe if our propane tank had completely fallen off.

FUN TIMES AND HIGH POINTS OF THE WEEK

Last Monday we left Chicago on a picture perfect day and settled into a prime RV Park at Litchfield, Illinois called KAMPER KOMPANION CAMPGROUND, Exit # 60 on I-55 (1-217-324-4747). This Gem was quick off and on – all level paved pull-thru’s with full hook-ups, 50 AMP connection and no trees to hinder Dish reception. 30 Amp was $18. and 50 Amp was $20 – taxes included. It is such a joy when we find parks like this.

Thursday, on the suggestions of Norm and Linda Payne on their website www.seeya-downtheroad.com, we stopped for two days at the SAM’S TOWN CASINO in Robinsonville, Mississippi (we had to drive to Tunica to top-up groceries) (662-363-0711 or 800 456-0711 ) Great campground – there are several RV parks in the area for under $20. Full service included 50Amp, cable, phone line etc. – and all for only $15.00 (GS rate). What shocked me was the number of High-end RV’s in the parking lot. They would have used almost that much in fuel costs running their generators to keep warm. Our furnace cut in and out frequently the two days we were there. It was a wet, cold and dirty two days

John and I are not true gamblers, but I had fun playing my $20.00 allowance in the penny slots. I was occupied for about 6 hours – sometimes I won and eventually I lost it all but it was enjoyable way to spend some time away from my computer for a little bit.

Today, Saturday the rain finally stopped and it is another beautiful comfortable sunny day en route to Monroe LA. Although the trees are still green it has been a pretty trip. We were thankful that vivid colours preceded us to almost through Missouri on this trip

FINAL THOUGHTS

We are only 2-3 driving days from our winter home in the Rio Grande Valley although we will not arrive there till late next week. It is just so much fun being on the move. John and I send a special prayer to all those in California who have had to deal with those horrendous wild fires. We pray that in time your disaster or near disaster will have a positive ending. Watch out all for those ‘Road-gaiters’ (shredded tires) and ‘Orange Barrels’. We have seen a lot of both on this trip. Travel safe wherever you go. P&J

Tips & Promos of Issue 42 - Oct 23 2007

TIPS THIS WEEK - From RV Packing tips, RV Life Lessons, Easy Living Hints – 3 ebooks in One
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

TRAVEL SECURITY – CRIMES AGAINST TRAVELLERS

Recently I attended a personal security seminar presented by a humorous ‘Cop’ from Georgia. He relayed the following tips – some may be repeats but I share them to stress the importance of each of them.

1. Only carry one credit card on your person at any one time.

2. Always lock RV doors in a campground when you are not at home.

3. If stopping in a mall or truck stop, etc.. ALWAYS park with your RV door facing the cameras and/or the people – not to the spacious outside grassy area. It gives not-so-nice people privacy to make your life difficult.

4. NEVER stop at a rest area during evening or overnight hours.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

SEVERAL ADDITIONAL SUGGESTIONS

*** If you break down on the highway and must call your ERS, this ‘cop’ also suggested that you Call 911 And/Or The State Highway Police so they know you are stranded on the side of the road while waiting for service. (*CELL phone numbers to call State Police are posted along the interstates).

***Always Keep Others Informed Of Your Wherabouts. For instance, if you stop at a rest area, let each other know where you’re going and how long you expect it to be gone – such as to pick-up a map or visit the washroom, etc.

***Only Open Your Car Door For Police In Uniform – request to see ID.

*** Check with police stations to ask if?? they have a sign ‘Call Police’. Hang it out the side window. Design one on your own if you can’t find one.

* **To make it difficult for ‘pick-pockets’, men should Always wrap a FAT elastic around their wallet or carry a small comb in it from side to side. If someone tries to remove the wallet, the elastic or the comb will catch on the fabric alerting you to a problem.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

INFORM CREDIT CARD COMPANIES THAT YOU ARE LEAVING YOUR HOME

Occasionally banks add a security hold to Credit Cards when they are tried to be used outside your residential area. It is no big deal. All you must do is call the card company and inform them where you are travelling. Any hold is released immediately. Not all banks add this HOLD but a pre-trip phone call prevents embracement during your trip.

INTERNET SATELLITE DISH – I frequently share the value of being on line 24/7 thanks to my wonderful Internet Satellite Dish. But last weekend, because I was visiting family, I connected using my cell phone for 3-days. Ohhhhh it is soooooo slow. My inbox froze more than once while large jokes tried to came in – sometimes it took 20 minutes. Whatever I attempted to do it seemed I was almost working backwards. Issue 42 - Fun Being Together With Family

October 23 (Newsy portion of our week in Review)

This Diary - An Up-front and Personal Look of Fulltime Life On The Move has been published weekly since 2001. Alternate version here

SPECIAL NOTE; This weeks post (20 October) is late because we have had so much fun at a rare weekend visit with John’s sister Marilyn, hubby Arnold and their kids in the Chicago area. Their driveway makes such a wonderful camping spot complete with electric connection. Read all about it further into this post. However we chose not to set up our dish for the weekend and I forgot how slow my cell is – so no Diary till today.

Hi All: What a picturesque trip we had so far. Almost immediately after crossing the border, the fall colours become vibrant. I know nature does not respect a line that separates any border, but ironically there was really a huge difference – Michigan colours were vivid and although SW Ontario was pretty – the trees were only coloured in spots (we found similar colour change in parts of Chicago.) Our very pretty trip south has been enjoyable even though part of it was wet – temperatures are very warm. It feels so good to be on the move again!

OUR WEEK IN REVIEW

We were definitely on the run this week to say the least – trying to tie up all ends before we left Cda was our major challenge. On Monday it was Katie’s turn for Last Minute Medical. Our Vet cut her nails, gave us a positive health report (as good as possible) and scraped her teeth as best as she could. Because of Katie’s heart condition (controlled with meds) Dr Allyson can not put her under for a tooth cleaning so she was on antibiotics for 10- days and then with the help of an assistant and a small mussel Dr ‘A’ was able to remove calculus from Katie’s back teeth. She is still on another 10 days of meds - then she should be good for 3-4 months. Our somewhat sick 13-year old ‘energizer bunny’ (with her large growth on her spleen) is hanging in there so guess she will be in Texas for at least part of the winter. Right now she does not show any signs of an early exit from this life.

____________________________

On Tuesday we drove 1.5 hrs to Brampton (near Toronto) for my regular (every 3 months) scheduled BOTOX injection to stop my eyes from blinking and my Dr had cancelled all his patients for that week. BUT since the office had a wrong phone number on file to reach me, I did not get the message. Sooooo guess I will just have to get it done in Progresso, Mexico as soon as I find an Ophthalmologist – I do have the Botox injection solution in the freezer and a schedule of where Dr Khan place the solution around my eyes.

However all was not lost because we love to shop at the bigger stores in the city and our trip back provided the perfect opportunity to visit good friends Trudy and Rod in Kitchener who are preparing to begin Retirement Phase Two. They will still be RVing but they wanted to add a Park Model to their possessions as a back-up to the mix for times they may not go south. So of course we had to stop by to see their quaint very spacious new-to-them acquisition. They are having a ball setting up a ‘stick’ home again after their many years of totally living on wheels. Enjoy the benefits of wide open areas.

____________________________

By Wednesday it was time to turn the key and leave our park for a short jaunt to Forest City RV Dealer In London (great service stop) to have an ignition switch replaced. While the coach was there John and I ran many other errands in the city by car. An hour later the coach was waiting for us. We hooked up and left for an overnight in the London Flying J.
_____________________________

We wanted to arrive at the Sarnia/Port Huron Border early on Thursday before traffic had accumulated. The Border Agent did ask many Q but since we travel with no meat in the freezer or citrus fruit on hand, we were on our way with minimal delay. However we did have to wait 25 minutes for traffic on the bridge to subside, but that is OK because we don’t like waiting extensively at the top. It is a long drop to the water. (Ha! Ha!) Although it rained, traffic was light with awesome colour the entire trip.

That evening we stopped at an RPI Park in Hartford, Michigan. As members we paid $8.00 per night – although it may be a great park in high season, it was barely OK at this time of year. On the good side of things we were able to set the Dish up in and around the trees. We also completed a couple loads of wash and relaxed so John could rest his ‘strained’ ankle. Early October he wounded himself climbing steep hills that used to be ski lifts at our new park in Braemer Valley, Woodstock, Ontario. It is still bothering him quite a bit. Coping with these ‘*#$%^&*’ birthdays that keep limiting us from doing the things we want to do, can be a pain in the neck.
_______________________________

By noon Friday we had settled into our driveway ‘home’ (Chicago) for the weekend. Dinner featured a trip down memory lane with Grandma’s recipe for tasty Pork Chops w/Lima Beans. On Saturday, sister Marilyn created a feast to-die-for in honour of a Belated Canadian Thanksgiving. She’s a gourmet cook who pulled out all the stops - from a fancy table set-up, to fireplace fire, to great conversation. Although this was our third seasonal feast, it was definitely the high point.

We see John’s family fairly often, but it has been a few years since we stopped at their house. This year we enjoyed their newly paved expansive driveway. Their spacious house borders a nature preserve and on Friday, five deer were passively grazing in their backyard. Unique and hypnotic yes, but they are also very destructive to Marilyn’s extensive manicured gardens.

This weekend was extra fun because nephew Jim and wife Lee Anne plus niece Mary Ellen and hubby Mark made a point to spend quality time with us during the day and for dinner. Of course our joy was extended because we also touched base with their families AJ; Henry & Ben, plus Stewart & Helene. These kids are growing so fast that two of them are already driving cars or soon will be. How time flies when you are having fun.
___________________________

SUNDAY began when the entire family met at church and our socializing culminated with BBQ steak dinner at Jim and Lee Anne’s. Too bad the weekend was over so fast but today, Monday, the work/school schedule was again in full swing and we all had places to go – including us en route to Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Thanks everyone from the bottom of our hearts, we had a fabulous time.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This lifestyle offers so many advantages to each of us. From staying with friends and relatives to camping in high-end resorts to boon-docking in the pristine wilderness to attending a rally to being snowbirds. We can each follow our dreams. Hopefully I will get our Fall pictures posted on Picasa soonest. Watch for the update notice on RVLiving.net! Take care everyone and always make a point to travel safe. P&J

TIPS & PROMO Issue 41 - 13 October

September RV RECALLS

RV Travel.com posted this link that includes a variety of RV Recalls covering towables to motorized units - including a few truck models. Some recalls date back to 1997 models.
Additional RV Recalls are listed separately for each month August -- July -- June

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

DEBIT CARDS. - Cdns who bank with Bank of Montreal have seen Ads stating each time you use your Debit Card you earn Air/Miles. (That’s how we paid for half our cruise). BUT those with a 'senior’s' account need to contact your branch to move your account to a new version. We still do not pay for our banking services because we are over age 60 but we only discovered last week we had to change accounts to receive A/M for our Debit Card purchases.

We have switched to a 'preferred' account but the $13.90 monthly fee has been waived because we are 'old'. All BofM Debit Card purchases plus cashback amounts earn one A/M for every $40. I had not changed our accounts - didn’t know I had to. When my branch manager in Brockville checked our totals – we would have earned 69 A/M since the program began in June. As a sign of good faith she awarded us a 100 A/M bonus. Soooo change your account, and call your branch if there is any problem.

Just for info NO MATTER WHAT COUNTRY YOU LIVE IN, use your Debit Cards to your advantage. By using them for purchases in Wal*Mart and Grocery stores saves RVers money in all countries. Many banks offer some kind of loyalty bonus points plus most busineses will allow you to take Cashback. As a result WE NO LONGER use an ATM in Cda or the USA. This eliminates all fees!!! – especially for Cdns travelling in the south – not sure how this will work in Mexico. We also do not carry Travellers Cheques or excess cash when we start out on a lengthy trip. Travels in 2007 is becoming more simplistic each year. However some banks do charge a small transaction fee; so always ask your branch about their policy.

If in doubt that your card will work just ask the cashier if you can Test your Debit Card”? It will go through, but if it doesn’t then you will not feel stupid if you must pay with cash or credit.

LADDER RV DRYER

Diary reader Marianne and hubby John came up with a neat tip about how to install an RV Dryer to their RV ladder using PCV Pipe ‘Arms’ with permanent ladder brackets. It is difficult to explain but Marianne sent me some self explanatory pictures . It ends up with two (removable) straight PCV Pipe ‘arms’ that attach to the ladder. She dries several items at a time. Neat, simple to use and easy to fabricate plus it would only take minimal storage space between stops.

CDN MILITARY/RCMP PENSION CLAWBACK

Repeat but we need your 'HELP and Support' again. Several weeks ago I requested all Cdn Military/RCMP and their friends and family sign the petition to stop the very unfair ‘Clawback’ of our pensions when we retirees reach age 65. The organizers hope to reach 1 million signatures and they still need the signatures of everyone. If you have not already signed it and feel like joining in please Help us retired members.

Issue 41.GETTING READY TO HEAD SOUTH

Oct 13, 2007 (Newsy Portion)

This Diary - An Up-front and Personal Look of Fulltime Life On The Move has been published weekly since 2001

SPECIAL NOTE; Next weeks post (20 October) will not go out till Monday 23rd. We are visiting family and they have offered their driveway for a parking spot. Our dish will not be set up and it takes to long to send this out using my cell phone.

_______________________________________

Hi All: Fall has finally hit southwestern Ontario. Nights are cool and although days are sunny and bright between 10 AM and 3 PM – mornings are dark and damp – definitely not my favourite type of weather – it is time to head south. On a beautiful day if we take a drive someplace, as 3 PM approaches you can feel temps changing and the day coming to a close even if it may not get dark ‘till 7:30. Trees are dressed in a multitude of colours but what we found interesting this year is the leaves on many trees have only turned colour in patches. I have never seen this type of colour change. Some trees are still green while others have already lost their leaves. I am sure there is a technical explanation for all of this but it really doesn’t matter. I only noted that it is so different.

_______________________________

OUR ROUTE (& COSTS) TO THE SUNNY SOUTH

Thursday we are on the move again to new destinations. Our route south this year is taking us in a varied direction. In brief, we are overnighting at the London Flying J (if you’re in the area and want to meet for dinner send us an email).

Our border crossing is Wednesday morning (we hope we will not run into a long line of cross border shoppers mid week); that night we stop at Travel Inn Resort, Hartford Michigan ($8.00 per night with RPI membership club) and the weekend at John’s sisters place in Chicago for a belated Cdn Thanksgiving feast.

Monday we are at Honey Bear Resort in Litchfield, Illinois (RPI - $8.00) and the 2 nights following we are at Sam’s Town Casino near Robertsville Mississippi for $15.00 p/night. Next stop is at our C2C home-park in Monroe, Louisiana for 4 days – (with the basic plan we bought, we still pay $8.00 p/night even if it is our home park. Send me an email to webmaster@rvliving.net for more info). Route this year is via Hwys 55, 20 and 35 to Texas.

In the Rio Grande we are booked from 1-7 Nov at Edinburg RPI park for $8.00 p/night followed with a reservation at Casa Del Valley from 7 Nov to 7 Dec using a Sun RV Resort coupon for $149.00. Not sure where we are after that.

Why I am relaying all this is so others can see it is not difficult to travel at a reasonable price. OUR CAMPING FEES TILL 7 DEC (49 DAYS) WILL TOTAL OF $287.00 OR AN AVERAGE OF $5.85 PER DAY. Yes to receive the RPI savings we did buy into C2C and RPI membership camping, but we did so for a low basic bare bones price of $514.00 for first year and $250 (RPI & C2C and park dues) for every year thereafter. We can exit the program for a very low amount anytime we wish. Send me an email if you want detailed explanation of our package. Other Discount Parks systems for Rec USA and Happy Camper are also reasonable – see details at www.rvliving.net/home.htm

OUR WEEK IN REVIEW

Thanksgiving MONDAY, everything was closed so we used the day to play catch-up.

TUESDAY our day began with had eye exams. We wanted to wait till John’s appointment with the eye specialist about the fuzzy image of his left eye was over – thankfully our eye Dr’s office was able to fit us in on a cancellation. It’s been 3-years for me and for some reason I was convinced that the ‘font’ used in phone books and on the Atlas was becoming smaller. I’ve had a very difficult time reading anything for the last while – would not admit my glasses needed updating.

Oh well on THURSDAY, thanks to a one-day stop at Lenscrafter I can see once again. John had no Rx change so he will wait till next summer after his Retina is repaired to get his glasses changed. My new ones are not as neat looking as I wanted (I need no-line TRI-focals for distance, computer and reading) because of so much correction they couldn’t fit it all into the new fancy narrow coloured ones. Oh the joys of getting older.

On WEDNESDAY we drove 2-hours to our storage unit in Owen Sound – our stuff has been there for the past 22 years – I am sure I no longer need most of it but I have no place to spread it out before disposing of half of it – so we simply keep it there. Our fees are at such a discounted rate that it is not worth moving elsewhere. We only visit it twice per year when we off-load the LUXOR and to pick up stuff we off loaded last year. We also stop at the Ahren’s family cemetery plot (John’s family) in Hanover to remove the beautiful headstone saddle to drop it at the florist so it will be ready for next year. Cindy’s Flower Shop in Hanover did such an awesome job of last year’s saddle – one of the prettiest one we’ve had - we let her refresh it for next spring. We usually stop at our Financial Consultant – also in Hanover. One long day covers a lot of ground. Katie, our elderly dog comes with us for the usually picturesque drive – unfortunately it rained all day.

THURSDAY, good ex-RVing friends Marlene and Frank invited us to lunch in their newly renovated house. It is a beautiful place and lunch was decadent. These two provide lodging for several worldwide students who flock to London for their education at the many colleges and universities in the city. These two provide home to four students at a time and when I say home I mean just that. They not only provide meals and lodging, they take on the complete roll of substitute parents for the young adults in their care. Thanks for a great visit.

FRIDAY we drove to Toronto (Mississauga) for the day to attend the ORVDA RV Show at the Congress Centre. WOW!!! RV’s sure have changed over the years. There are now micro-mini models that any car could tow – a comfortable option to setting up a tent just for an overnight stop. These small units would also be dry and warm during fringe seasons. On the other side of the coin we also saw a variety of compact motorized units all the way up to high-end gas/diesel powered motorhomes. A vast selection of very beautiful classy huge fifth wheels – some with as many as 4-5 slides - were also beckoning. Dealers even featured a number of used units. Posted show prices ranged anywhere from $2-$300.00 per month to a purchase price of $6-$700,000 .00 up. There was something to suit any lifestyle, budget, wants and desires at this show. BUT much the same is available at most shows.

If you’re in a market for a NEW unit – visit an RV show to see the latest. You will be pleasantly impressed at what the industry has to offer. I send a very special ‘Thanks’ to ALL the Diary readers who took the time to stop me to say Hello – thanking me for the info I send each week. You guys made John’s and my day – we thank you from the bottom of hearts. It was also nice to know who is on the other side of a name. Great to see the crew from so many dealers, clubs and professionals that we have worked with over the years. Since we no longer attend a lot of RV Shows - unless we are working them that is - but we had a ball. A good trip from London to Mississauga on a picture perfect day was the icing on the cake.

FINAL THOUGHTS

That’s it for this week. Saturday night John and I attended the belated Cdn Thanksgiving dinner at the Chalet Rec Hall – we chose not to stay for the dance – but will next time. Braemer Valley RV Park (Woodstock, Ontario) is such a wonderful Gem of an RV Resort; we are very comfortable here - residnets have made us feel so welcome. Tonight we met many of our new neighbours. Spending next season here should be fun. At least we know when we go down east in July and August our site will not be rented out while we are away like it was at our last park. We are still annoyed he did that. Take care guys.

HAPPY CDN THANKSGIVING & COLUMBUS DAY

TIP FOR WEEK of 6 October, Issue 40

Diary published weekly since 2001

RV FIRES

A day does not go by that I do not hear about another RV fire – either they are reported on a Google RV Alert that I receive every day OR from a first hand report I relay below. (Google Alerts are newspaper RV stories from around North America so the situations are not abundant, but one is too many).

Some fires are from leaking fluids and others are as a result of flat tires or a few from tires/brakes that need changing. An RV friend Lorne plus other friends Trudy and Rod relayed a story about a Fifth Wheel that caught fire in their park in southwestern Ontario.

How it Happened?

The people left their RV to go for supper and on return, their 2-year old unit was engulfed in flames. First suspect was from suspicious causes, but after a thorough inspection, the fire marshal determined that the lead crystal decoration hanging in their window – with the help of the sun – set fire to their ‘scotch-guarded’ rug.

I have heard of this happening in the past and a warning is even in the Tips Section of my book and e-books but I had never heard of it up close and personal. RVers, please become fire conscious in your travels. Book an annual propane check and reinforce that your smoke detectors plus CO and propane monitors are working. If these devices need batteries, why not change them during spring/fall time changes?

Thankfully the insurance replaced their Fifth and the park residents held a ‘fund-raiser pot-luck’ – they are heading south for the winter. This story had a happy ending but become fire aware and ensure you make regular maintenance appointments.

NEWS of our 'Life on the Move' for 06 October Issue 40
Diary published weekly since 2001

Hi All: What a pretty time of year in the central north USA and Canada. Hope your area is as beautiful. The leaves are beginning to change and so far our weather has been sunny, warm and so very pleasant. However I also heard that Whistler BC is enjoying early snow – great news for skiers. No matter where you are located, we hope each of you can get away to enjoy some relaxing outstanding Fall Camping or at the very least spend the holiday weekend with family and friends.

TIDBITS OF INFO
THANKSGIVING IN CANADA dates back to the time of Martin Frobisher, an English explorer – he was attempting to find a northern passage to the Orient. Along the way he established a settlement in Canada. So in 1578, he hosted a formal ceremony in what is now the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, to give thanks for surviving the long journey.
This event is widely considered to be the first Canadian Thanksgiving, and the original Thanksgiving event to occur in North America. Although First Nations People gave official Thanksgiving during autumn gatherings. According to Wikipedia it was held every year but the date and purpose for giving Thanks changed. In Jan 31st 1957 the Cdn Parliament declared an official holiday to be held annually on the 2nd Monday in October.

A bit about COLUMBUS DAY – this holiday is in celebration of Christopher Columbus’s arrival to the Americas during his first voyage in 1492. Big celebrations for 300th and 400th anniversary were held in New York and in other areas during the early 1900’s but it was not until 1937 that it became an official holiday – thanks to the Knights of Columbus and President Roosevelt. Read more history about Columbus Day.

CDN MILITARY PENSION CLAWBACK
Several weeks ago I requested all Cdn Military and their friends and family sign the petition to stop the very unfair ‘Clawback’ of our pensions when we retirees reach age 65. They hope to reach 1 million signatures and they still need the support of everyone. If you have not already signed it please go here to support our cause.

OUR NEW ‘HOME’
This busy and interesting week began when we moved to BRAEMER VALLEY RV PARK see pictures on each page) 14 km north of Woodstock on highway 59. - (1-519-452-2977). What a neat place in the country but still so close to the city of Woodstock. There are only 77 sites in this 55+ park – most are park model permanent units – but they also have 15 spacious RV sites. Best part is their regular rates are only $15.00 per night – 3 way hook-up. Water is Reverse Osmosis. Everyone is sooooo very friendly, plus the clubhouse w/exercise room, relaxing lounge plus billiard table and the pool are very hospitable and inviting. Pretty wooded hills surround the park but not enough to block our two Dishes (TV and Internet).
We are here till 17 October this fall and we plan to spend the season here next year as well. (Season rate is a low $1495.00 – tax included). Very laid back place and we think we are going to really like it here.
NOTE: Before we left our previous park close to London, I had the chance to talk to the owner of that campground while paying our final bill. At least now he knows what an unethical person he is. Hopefully he will never rent another site out to someone else while the contracted owner is away.

MORE MEDICAL STUFF
I only relay these issues because no matter how young you are when you start to enjoy life on the road – we all get older. John had both cataracts successfully removed over the last two years but over the winter his left eye began to get a bit fuzzy. Last Monday he visited an eye surgeon/specialist at London Victoria hospital. After a barrage of tests they discovered he has a layer growing on his Retina. Apparently it is not uncommon and there is no apparent cause except for ‘birthdays’. Solution – and only if John wants to pursue it – he will go in for an operation next May 5th. The Dr will surgically remove the excess layer and it should take 4-6 weeks to heal. He could probably drive within a few weeks.

ERRANDS – A NECESSARY EVIL – YUK!
It seems there are always errands to run so besides getting set-up, become accustomed to our new surroundings, meeting our neighbours, plus picking up our winter supply of drugs, John used this week to polish the coach – looks great and I scrubbed our inlaid rugs with Oxy-clean and a water hose on the picnic table. It is just all part of our preparation for our southern departure on the 17th. It is unbelievable that the climate is so warm this late in October. Tomorrow (Sunday) we will be hosting Thanksgiving dinner here in the LUXOR complete with turkey and all the trimmings for niece Sandi and son Jacob from London. We never entertained in our last park because it cost $3.00 per person to stop for a visit. Unfortunately many parks charge visitors and I do not like it much. I love my friends but I would hate to pay $6.00 just to visit someone – that is why we eat in restaurants so much. However since this place has no gate fee, we may entertain much more next summer. What a big difference between parks – Braemer Valley is economical as well as a pleasant very friendly place to camp.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Before we go we do plan to attend the Toronto RV Show at the Congress Centre on Friday. If you also plan to be there we may be able to touch base. It feels good to be getting ready to depart for a winter in the sun. Hopefully this year we will stay in the south till mid April. We expect to stay overnight at the Flying J in London on the night of the 17th. Anyone in the area? ... why not join us for dinner. Drop us an email so we can watch for you. Take care everyone. Travel safe P&J
