A new SCAM has surfaced for residents of Provinces/States that use VALIDATION STICKERS TO REGISTER YOUR VEHICLE PLATES (tags) each year. Thieves are prying these stickers off and re-applying them to their vehicles. By driving safe no one suspects they have a stolen sticker. Whenever we apply a new sticker over the old, simplifies their removal. On your vehicle it is wise to apply the new one on a clean surface – remove all traces of old stickers. Press firmly in place before scoring it with an Exacto knife. This way, when it is attempted to be removed, only pieces will come off.

Gayle shared a new SCAM reference CREDIT CARD FRAUD. It generally begins via a phone call. The caller provides mega info under the guise of verifying you have your card from a security standpoint. They relay many details about your card and ask for very little. BUT the one point they do not have is last three digits on the back of your card. NEVER GIVE THOSE NUMBERS TO ANY CALLER. Their blurb sounds very helpful like you would assume an official Fraud Report would sound like, including giving you phone numbers to call for follow-up assistance. What they want is those numbers – bottom line is no one from a credit card company will ever ask you for this info – they already have this info. If you provide the numbers, a charge will immediately appear on your card for an item you did not purchase. Value will be just under the $500 level so the sale will not send up any red flags.

In a recent Google RV Alert… one writer offered her Winnebago for rent on OWNER'S RENTAL, a website devoted solely to RV Rentals in Arizona. Extend your search with Google by entering the words "Rental of Recreational Vehicles" – you'll discover many such websites for other states as well. They each offer RV’s Rentals owned by individuals living in a particular area; many are in the West. This unique ownersrental.com site consists of dozens of one-paragraph ads placed by residents of different cities in Arizona. This may be an option to a hotel/air getaway.

Bill shared this post from Microsoft: MALWARE PREYS ON FEAR – Computer users' worry about contacting worms and viruses, however the latest fear is about attacks on your PC. This time it arrives via bogus security software. Apparently while monitoring hundreds of PCs, 7 of the top 25 threats directly came in the form of FAKE security programs. Consumers are often tricked by pop-ups that falsely warn of risks to the PC. Users are urged to click a button to rid the PC of the virus… DON’T DO THIS – by doing so, you may actually download the ‘Malware’.

BUYERS BEWARE! My friend Bonnie sent this Blog Post – sorry I do not have the URL to share with you to read it for yourself but their blog should be a heads up for everyone. The post relays… Fulltimers recently BOUGHT A USED COACH at a respected Dealer in Summerdale AL. They were strongly advised by everyone that this was the time to take advantage of a super deal. However even though they bought from a supposedly responsible business – that Dealer neglected to pay off the amount owing on the loan of the coach we traded. They also did not provide a title to the company that gave them the loan on the coach they purchased. That business has since closed their doors.

These two are now responsible to make 2-coach payments and they do not know where their previous unit is. They also cannot transfer plates without a title plus as Fulltimers they have no other home. They also checked with the BBB on the security of this dealer – it was apparently a very upstanding business. Even though a dealer seems to be doing business normally they may be in the middle of their own financial crisis and getting ready to close their doors.

Their ADVICE to anyone purchasing an RV in this economic crisis (and always) is to never accept a coach until you are sure that there is a clear title to it available to you. Secondly be sure your trade in has been paid off before accepting another coach.

Bill sent an email relaying a couple that thought they had the flu but instead they were suffering from Carbon Monoxide poisoning - symptoms are similar. This brings to light the value of having a ‘WORKING’ CO DETECTOR in both the house and RV. Don’t forget to regularly check that the batteries are charged in both the Smoke Alarm AND your CO Detector.

Cathy relays… This is one of the greatest tips I’ve received in many years. Life would have been simpler if I’d known about this thirty years ago. Joanne and Marc have an alternate to a contract-style cell phone plan. While wintering in south Texas they use their home Cdn Bell calling plan (to USA- Cdn or vice versa) to make Free LD calls between countries. While in the USA they bought a TRAC PHONE FOR CALLS WITHIN THE USA at a cost of $.12 p/m. There are many options to stay in touch – but everyone should have some kind of cell phone for emergency calls. Check out all options

Looks like the ‘MAKE –DO’ POSTAL CODE for Cdns IS working. I have had 10 reports from various RVers across the south with positive results that it is working. I also got 2-reports of people who had a bit of a problem with theirs - but their Postal Code had mainly 0’s and 1’s in it. Not sure how you would get around that point. Reports pour in from those using the Temp Postal Code in a Texas Kmart to a gas station. They’re thrilled to finally have a working solution. Keep the reports coming guys.

Bill & Jann shared that FINES FOR ‘DUI’ IN CALIFORNIA have recently risen drastically. When the dust settles fines can end in the Thousands. He sent example of some of the charges such as fines, towing penalties, Attorney fees; reissue of license fees; increased insurance coverage plus many more. Bottom line is stay sober and save some cash – everywhere – but especially in California.

Bill also alerted about a SCAM that while your car is parked at a gas station (maybe even in a store parking lot) someone will knock on your window as you are driving off to tell you that YOU DROPPED SOME MONEY – the person outside is waving a $5.00 - $20.00 bill. They want you to open your window AND because they look like they are being a ‘Good Samaritan’, you may fall for the ploy. Do not do it. Simply drive away. The chances that the cash is yours are very slim. If you open your window you could be subject to a car jacking or worse. Report the encounter to the Police.

TIPS of week 28th

This superior 10-minute video about ‘HOW TO HANDLE A TIRE BLOWOUT ON A MOTORHOME OR OTHER RV’ is a must-see. Many of these tips would even work with a regular passenger vehicle. Definitely worth watching HERE… Hitting the brakes is the worst thing you can do. Taking your foot off the accelerator is almost as dangerous. Even if you have seen it before – it’s definitely worth a repeat.

Jim Twambly of RV Travel.com relays that many Hospitals now have RV parking available for families with patients in treatment. Most have electric and water hook-ups and many have sewer hook-ups as well. This may be more common in the USA but it is nice to know. Read his Blog HERE…

April 1st is coming and with it several APRIL FOOLS DAY VIRUS’S will also surface. Bill announced there is a new one promised called ‘Conficker’. There is still nothing on Snopes.com about it but everyone should have a GOOD VIRUS PROTECTION on your computer. Whether that is the Free one that I use from AVG; or McAfee, or Norton etc. Just be sure to get one of them.

Bill also sent these TIPS ON CHEQUE WRITING from a lawyer friend who had things stolen.

***When you order cheques, only add your initials (instead of first name) and last name put on them.

***If your cheques book is stolen, offenders will not know if you sign your cheques with your initials... Or your first name, but your bank will know.

***Instead of signing a credit card, only add "PHOTO ID REQUIRED".

***Never add a complete account number anywhere on a cheque – only use the last 4-numbers. The Bank already has the full #.

***When possible, use a work phone # versus home phone; a P.O. box or work address versus home.

***Never have your SIN# printed on your cheques – write it in only if needed.

Buying RX at COSTCO may be a big savings. As a senior in Ontario, John and I only pay $4.00 for most prescriptions under the Seniors Drug Plan. But if your province doesn’t offer this feature OR you are young – Cathy shared this solution. Go to Costco for absolutely the lowest price for RX meds. This apparently is the case in Canada as well as USA. If you are paying full price for your costly Rx then Costco is definitely worth checking out. No need to be a member – just go to the store and tell the reps at the door that you only want to visit the pharmacy. Rx drugs in many places can be sold for very elevated costs.

More on the ZIP CODE AT THE GAS PUMPS FOR CDNS – Bernie (twice) in the Southwest and Bill (once) in the Valley have met with positive results to this ‘modified’ ZIP Code. However Rick – a Club Member from our Luncheon did not have great success at a Valero somewhere in the Rio Grande Valley – but I do not know where his station was located. So it may be too early to determine if this is a total success. In the meantime this is how it works. Punch in the numbers in your Postal Code followed by two ‘0’s’. For example ‘V8L 4X6’ – would be 8-4-6-0-0. Please keep me posted on your success and/or failure of this Hint.

They also offer one month stays for $149 and up plus discounted weekly stays as well. If your plans are not set for next season it may be worth a call. First-time visitors only. Some tips about HOW TO GO RV GREEN from Florida State Parks….

Lighten up – Improve fuel mileage, by removing extra weight from the vehicle. It may be unused items in storage compartments, or even abundant drinking water – it weighs 8.2 pounds per gallon.

Plan ahead – Reduce fuel consumption, travel time and additional costs by planning trips in advance – avoid backtracking.
Consider alternatives – When purchasing an RV, consider an engine that can utilize biodiesel, it is manufactured from renewable resources.
Also installing solar panels to power up the vehicle’s appliances can eliminate 90 percent of normal generator use.
Save energy - If solar panels are not an option, save energy by turning off the electronics when not in use. or limit RV generator and electronics use in general.
Keep it clean – Whatever is brought into a campsite should come back out. While stocking for a trip, try to avoid products that utilize unnecessary packaging and choose reusable storage bags.
Recycle… plastic containers, paper products and cans along the way. Used engine oil, tires and batteries, even computers or cell phones can also be recycled at many municipal facilities.
A water-saver showerhead… will not only reduce water usage but will save energy too.
Use non-toxic, natural cleaning products when cleaning up after a trip.

TIPS THIS WEEK

For years I have promoted the value of keeping your vehicle KEY FOB BESIDE THE BED for security while you are boondocking (without hook-ups). If you hear a sound during the night simply press the panic button to sound the vehicle alarm. Cathy sent an email covering the same topic – this time for homeowner security. Her tip came from ‘Neighbourhood Watch’. I had never thought of it for static homes. Good idea Cathy. One more addition to this is to also keep your CELL PHONE BESIDE THE BED in case your main phone line went down. You are still in contact with someone.

More on the ZIP CODE AT THE GAS PUMPS FOR CDNS – Bernie (twice) in the Southwest and Bill (once) in the Valley are meeting with positive results to this ‘modified’ ZIP Code. How it works. Punch in the numbers in your Postal Code followed by two ‘0’s’. For example ‘V8L 4X6’ – would be 8-4-6-0-0.

Dave sent an email warning it’s NOT WISE TO BOIL WATER IN A MICROWAVE. This is a repeat tip and although it doesn’t happen often, the process can cause injury if water is heated for more than 2-minutes per cup. It is a long explanation but one solution is to let the cup stand in the microwave for thirty seconds before moving it or adding anything into it… or put something non-metalic in the cup/bowl before heating it. Hi Guys: One thing is certain. The caravans heading north have begun. There are so many empty spots in the parks right now – it looks like it did last November. Between 13-20 departed every day during the past week. No matter where you drive in the Valley, RV’s are on the roadways.

Many Canadian Snowbirds must still be here because notices continue to arrive for the EXPLORER RV CLUB LUNCHEON at the ‘Golden Corral in Weslaco’ on the 19th Mar – if you’ll be in the Valley please join us. EMAIL Guests are welcome. Drop a note for more details – however for planning it’s important we know if you can join us. Those heading out - we hope you have a safe journey.

More on the ZIP CODE at the gas pumps for Cdns –
As a follow up, Bernie sent this – “I am so excited it worked”. He fuel up at a Shell Station in Desert Hot Springs, AZ and inserted in his visa – when asked for his ZIP Code he entered the #’s in his Cdn postal code (PC) in the exact order plus two zeroes – i.e. his Code is: V8L 4X6 – he entered 8-4-6-0-0. Amazingly it was ‘Authorized’. He plans to test at a different station before he declares it official.

Bonnie shared this site to identify where an unknown PHONE NUMBER comes from. At this site HERE you simply type in the number that keeps calling you to find details of who the telemarketer is. You can also report a bad number. Bonnie has book marked it for future reference.

COFFEE FILTERS are extremely useful – buy a 1000 in the $$$ store – 6 tips of 14 are below – more to follow…
1. Coffee filters make excellent covers for bowls or dishes when cooking in the microwave.
2. Coffee filters are Lint-free so they'll leave windows sparkling.
3. Protect china by separating your good dishes by putting a coffee filter between each dish.
4. If you break the Cork when opening a wine bottle, filter the wine through a coffee filter.
5. Place a coffee filter in the skillet to absorb moisture and prevent rust.
6. Apply shoe polish by balling up a lint-free coffee filter.

At the Luncheon several RVers asked about the ZIP CODE THAT CDNS CAN PUNCH IN AT THE GAS PUMP so there is no need to leave a Cr. Cd. at the gas office while they pump gas. I reported it in reverse order. Bernie sent me this tip a few weeks ago but I have NOT had a chance to test it. The original in the RV Times magazine (fm BC) suggested that Cdns add a secondary USA address to their credit cards. We did this – it’s only an address and no action is taken on that info. Those without a USA Mail Forwarding can use address from your US snowbird park. BUT some RVers state this didn’t work - as a result one member now stays with the card while the other pumps. That works but it’s a nuisance. We buy a gas card at Wal*Mart and fuel at Fly J – without problems.

Bernie sent this NEW TIP and although I relayed it at the luncheon, I did so backwards - Sorry. He was told by a lady in a gas station that when asked for a ZIP Code we should simply enter the 3-digits of your area code in the order that they appear in the code, and then add two zeros. i.e. BERNIE’S AREA CODE IS V8L 4X6, SO THE CODE HE WOULD ENTER WOULD BE: 8-4-6-0-0.

VIRUS’S & SCAMS...
#1…Sandi shared an email stating ‘Do Not DIAL AREA CODE 809, 284, AND 876’. Apparently a voice message asks you to call a number in these area codes to pick-up a serious message. You’re kept on line for a long expensive out of country call. Supposedly AT&T as well as Snopes verified it, although these reports list concerns, the threat is not all doom and gloom. Just don’t call anyone you don’t know – if you’re concerned call the person they talk about and not the number in the phone message. Read story HERE

#2… Bill warns that ’Adobe PDF files’ may be infected. These are files many use to publish ebooks and more. Adobe is working on a FIX solution – in the meantime they advise this caution on their website. …”Meanwhile, the advice for this type of thing remains typical: Be extra careful when opening e-mail attachments -- even a well-meaning friend's a '.PDF' file might be infected. Also, update your virus-fighting software programs, and, as always, be vigilant”…. Read the full story of this popular software HERE.

#3… Angie warns of opening attachment of POSTCARDS or E-CARDS from HALLMARK from a non-specific person such as a ‘family’ member. This has circulated numerous times over the years. The attachment is reputed to burn your hard drive. Some truth is reported in the threat, but the bottom line is to be cautious of opening all attachments – especially non-descript ones. To open an e-card never click on the link – go to the site mentioned to enter the number of your card. Also if you hover your mouse over the link be sure the URL in your task bar is the same as the link in the email. Story HERE .

RENTING YOUR RV for a short term is a great idea. This suggestion came through in my Google RV Alert today. Raymond Brody, owner of Camper's Corner in Madison, Tennessee had a request to provide more than 100 RVs for staff and guests of an upcoming event. To accommodate this request, he asked his customers to bring in their RV’s that were in storage for the duration of the festival – he promised to pay each owner from $750. to $1000 to use their units – easy money for everyone. He met the request with super success. Maybe more dealers will think this way in the future.

Patti shared - Effective mid Feb, all Verizon/Alltel phones are considered MOBILE TO MOBILE. That means any one with either service will not be charged minutes when calling each other.

Carolyn passed on the fact that… ‘COCOA MULCH’ is being sold in many stores because of the pleasant smell it gives off. Some brands are promoted to be safe for all pets plus many animals will not go near it. However some packages have no such warning. At least one dog has died from ingesting it. Just be aware that chocolate is lethal to dogs and cats. Since it smells like inviting chocolate they may be enticed to eat some. Adrienne Kristine of RV Travel.com created a PERMANENT GROCERY LIST. (edited for space)… When she shops, she buys many of the same things each week. So she made a list of standard purchases and laminated it for reuse at Kinko’s/Fed Ex etc. With an erasable marker she checks off each item she needs throughout the week - while shopping she simply wipes off the mark as she puts the item in her cart. This ways she doesn't forget anything and her reusable lists lasts indefinitely.

Bill received these SECURITY TIPS from a lawyer who had his wallet stolen. More to follow in future weeks…

*** PHOTOCOPY CONTENTS of your wallet – copy both sides of each license, credit card, etc. In the past I suggested every RVer makes a list of each item complete with card numbers, contact info, etc. Store the info in a safe place. If you encounter a problem, cancellations are easier with access to these numbers. Stolen Cards can lead to total identity theft. Never put your SIN# to wallet contents.

*** If your wallet is stolen, call the two NATIONAL CREDIT REPORTING ORGANIZATIONS immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and SIN#. This advice was news to this lawyer until his bank called to inform him an application for credit was made over the Net in his name.

*** To prove you are diligent, always file a POLICE REPORT immediately in the jurisdiction where your wallet was stolen. Apparently there are records of all the credit checks initiated by the thief's purchases which means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen, they must contact you by phone to authorize new credit. The numbers you need to contact…1.) Equifax Canada: 1-877-249-2705; 2.) TransUnion: 1-877-525-3823

DIGITAL TV TRANSITION DATE POSTPONED… The TV(s) in older RV’s will likely pick up signals until late this spring. The transition to digital TV has been officially postponed until June 12. The new switchover date delay is voluntary, meaning that broadcasters are only required to turn off their analog signals by June 12. If they choose to, they can do it anytime after Feb. 17 - the original planned cut-off. Once the analog spectrum is officially vacated it will be used by public safety services and other companies that purchased rights to the airwaves last year. I stress to everyone – ALWAYS be cautious of EVERY attachment you open. Donna & George shared this ‘new’ VIRUS that affects those using Internet mail such as Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL etc. Full story is explained HERE… The Para below from Snopes verifies this threat - but it is apparently not a current one.

Report as of 30 Nov 08… “This latest version is difficult to classify as either "true" or "false": The virus it references (i.e., the Mail Server Report worm) was a real one, but it's neither new nor currently rampant (as claimed in the warning text), nor does it manifest itself in the fashion described (since the "symptoms" provided in the warning are merely a reworking of the text of an earlier virus hoax). All in all, that message doesn't really merit the dire warning to "SEND A COPY OF THIS TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS – and ask them to PASS IT ON IMMEDIATELY!"

TRAVELLING WITH PETS – KOA shared these tips in a Google RV Alert – edited by me for space.

Ask if the RV Park allows pets on the premises.
Ask about park's pet rules such as use of pet-pens; or size/breed restrictions; or if # of pets is limited.
Never lock pets inside an RV without the A/C running or proper ventilation. John and I prefer to use several fans working off our inverter rather than A/C – just in case park power goes out.
Provide pet with plenty of water. Ours are in their ‘house’ (a cage) when we are gone.
Never tie a pet to an RV with a metal chain. A power surge or improperly grounded facilities can travel along the chain and injure or kill the pet.

I STRESS – ALWAYS READ ALL COMMUNICATION CONTRACTS THOROUGHLY ABOUT ANY SERVICE RESTRICTIONS – CALL SEVERAL TIMES TO ASK QUESTIONS TO VERIFY.

***Judy from Alberta shared she was using her ‘Sierra Wireless devices for Internet from Telus’ at $99. per month. Her contract stated she had unlimited usage anywhere in North America. She used it last winter in USA and in bigger cities in Northwestern Mexico with great success as far south as Puerto Vallarta. Worked great till 2-days before their recent journey home when service stopped. They called Telus from home in Alberta and discovered that over $18,600.00 (correct amount) in-data calls had accumulated. Apparently Telus no longer included Mexico in their NA plan, but their contract did not state this. Thankfully Telus did waive their charges. Of course the contract she had is no longer available and new ones are much more specific about coverage.

Judy stresses that if you are using one of these devices and are in the Southern US, please make sure you are not bouncing off a Mexican tower, unless you have coverage. It may be wise to keep a record of proof where you used this device if you’re close to Mexico. Several years ago this type of policy change affected John and I with Rogers/AT&T cell phone. At that point Roger’s were charging $4. p/min roaming fee in a small percentage of USA areas – however many restricted areas were in locations where RVers visited such as the Rio Grande Valley. That is when we switched to Verizon.

ALWAYS WASH ALL POP CANS - regular CANS too. I can’t remember who shared this Serious Caution by email but it is a major concern. Even if the details may be a bit stretched, it is still sound advice that many of us do not follow. I’ve edited it for space. After drinking a can of pop – a lady became very ill – the next day she was in Intensive Care. Unfortunately she didn’t make it and she died two days later. The autopsy concluded she died of 'Leptospirosis' - it was traced to the can of coke she drank from. Tests showed that the can was infected by dried rat urine and hence the disease Leptospirosis. Apparently rat urine contains toxic and deathly substances. It’s highly recommended to thoroughly WASH THE UPPER PART OF ALL SODA CANS - before drinking from them. This applies to regular cans as well. Numerous diseases could be on any can stored in warehouses – none are cleaned before shipping. A study at NYCU showed that the tops of all cans - especially soda cans are more contaminated than public toilets (germs and bacteria). Always wash with water before putting them to the mouth

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF HEART ATTACK shared in an email by Donna ... Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to include PAIN IN A LEFT ARM. Also be aware of intense PAIN IN THE JAW LINE - plus you may never have the first CHEST PAIN during the course of a heart attack. NAUSEA AND INTENSE SWEATING are also common symptoms. 60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep never wake up. Pain in the JAW can wake you from a sound sleep. Be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive. ALWAYS call for immediate assistance.

Highlights of a recent second email reference a FEMALE HEART ATTACK include the following symptoms. This post was long so I am only highlighting possible symptoms here. Sensation of major INDIGESTION much like you had rapidly ate a sandwich that was never chewed properly – another sensation was like SQUEEZING MOTIONS racing up your SPINE gaining speed as they continued under the sternum (breast bone, where one presses rhythmically when ministering CPR). Next pain gravitated into the throat and branched out into the JAW. Call 911 IMMEDIATELY. Even if you are experiencing a false alarm, it’s better to report the symptoms. Sender unknown.

Norm and Jana shared info about OVERPRICED RX DRUGS – many, even generic Rx, may carry escalated costs. Everyone should always shop around!!! This was a long email so I am highlighting a few tips. Costco is one place that consistently charge very LITTLE over the pharmacy cost for their generic drugs. Their prices are consistent with on-line listings and you don’t have to be a member to buy Rx there. Relay at the door that you wish to use the pharmacy, and they’ll let you in. I am also sure that Wal*Mart, Walgreen's, Sam’s Club and several others also sell at reduced prices. Bottom line is YOU MUST SHOP AROUND!!! Do not buy in the first store you stop. John has been up and down I-75 (Ontario to Florida) three times this winter – he was disappointed to find that the FLYING J GAS PRICES were almost always higher than the competition several exits away. Besides that, their computers are 15 years old and he had to line up inside for a receipt. Here's a tip. On driving days if you'll be passing a Flying J, check prices HERE – FLYING J LISTS IT'S GAS, PROPANE AND DIESEL PRICES FOR ALL STATIONS. This way you can compare gas prices as you head down the interstate. Loyalty has its price – the lowest price!

Jana and Norm were searching for a GPS SYSTEM that would list RV Campgrounds. They found the ‘MAGELLAN 1412 MODEL GPS’ that includes some KOA and some Good Sam Parks. Although the parks are not all there, nor is it as user friendly while driving as others they tried, it gives enough of the info they wanted.

I received this email a while ago but it is especially appropriate during the start of a New Year. Not sure who shared it with me, but it is kinda cute… a look at the ‘LIGHTER SIDE OF LIFE’.

*** Honey remedy for SKIN BLEMISHES… cover blemish with a dab of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight.
*** Cleaning liquid that doubles as BUG KILLER… if menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets are a pest and you can't find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409. Insects drop to the ground instantly.
*** Hunt's Tomato Paste BOIL CURE... cover the boil with Hunt's Tomato Paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.
*** Vinegar to HEAL BRUISES... soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process.

If you are enjoying it, that’s super – but if you downloaded it and don’t wish to receive more email from the author Michael Green - either ‘black-list’ him or ‘block’ his email. In Outlook Express I simply go to ‘Message’ and hit ‘Block Sender’. It still comes in, but it goes directly to your ‘delete’ folder. At first look, the ebook looked valuable – although the majority were happy, some were upset that I shared the link. I will be more careful what I pass on in the future. If I offended anyone I apologize.

Ignore threats of bad luck – all email are only words.

Before you forward Amber Alerts, or a Virus Alert, or Urban Legends that seem too good to be true – check them out before you hit forward. Most are junk that's been circling the Net for years! Just about everything you receive that’s in question can be checked out at Snopes.com. Type in topic to find if its a real threat or not – if not, please don't pass it on.

It’s an awesome FREE service from Google – great if you’re on the move. Next Q, "Business, Name or Type of Service." you say, Firewheel Golf Course." Voice says, "Connecting" and Firewheel answers the phone. How great is that? Warning.- New SCAM for drivers. I have received this from Bill and again from Rex. It is long so I’m editing for space. If you see a paper on your back window DO NOT STOP TO REMOVE IT. The ‘bad guys’ want you to get out of your car when you are leaving a parking lot. Instead just drive away – remove the paper later. Be thankful that you read this info. This applies to both women and men – it’s new way to do car jackings (it’s not a joke). Be aware and pass this on.

SCAM works like this - you start the engine and shift into reverse, and look in the rearview mirror when you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the window blocking your view. So, you shift into park, unlock your doors, and jump out of your car to remove that paper (or whatever it is). When you reach the back of your car, the carjackers appear out of nowhere, jump into your car and take off. They practically mow you down as they speed off in your car. And guess what, ladies? I bet your purse is still in the car. So now the carjacker has your car, your home address, your money & your keys. Your home and your whole identity are now compromised!

Anne had problems while she was still in Canada trying to determine if herTD DEBIT CARD WORKED FOR CASHBACK. She even called the local Wal*Mart and HEB with NO satisfactory results. Good News Anne: Our friends parked across the street use their TD Debit Card on a regular basis - they take $100 Cash Back frequently at Wal*Mart's in the Rio Grande Valley. We have used a BofM debit card for CB/purchases for over 5-7 years and I have had clerks tell me my card won't work because the card from the next state does not work. My advice is to ask if you can do a 'test'. If you talk to the bank staff in Cda they probably do not know either. We occasionally use our Royal card, but they charge a $1.00 fee transaction – BofM does not and our friends said the TD does not. In reality these days MOST Cards seem to work.

FYI HEB has reduced their CB to $50. per transaction but I have at times divided my order in 2 so I can take CB twice. Also in our case John's numbers are different than mine are so we have at times taken CB 1/2 on his and 1/2 on mine. I cannot tell you how to verify this info, but all I can say is our friends use their TD Debit on many occasions and we live by CB from Wal*Mart - usually $100.00.

FYI #2, The Cdn $$$ exchange has killed us since Nov. It is a bit better today - only $1.24 but last week I paid as much as $1.36 one day on a Cr Cd purchase. So in closing I would not worry about Cash Back - In an emergency there is always ATM's but I am sure your TD will work.

A NEW SCAM – JURY FRAUD… From Mary - the caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11-states, including Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado. This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI and the Federal Courts have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud - HERE. NEVER SHARE ANY VITAL INFO WITH ANYONE IF YOU DID NOT MAKE THE CALL.

Bill shared this… Do you have a PACEMAKER or an IMPLANTED DEFIBROLATOR? If so, do not keep your iPod Ear-buds in your shirt pocket or draped around your neck - even when they're disconnected. A study finds that some headphones can interfere with heart devices if held very close to them. They might even prevent a defibrillator from delivering a lifesaving shock, say doctors who tested them.

Dr. William Merisel, a cardiologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and a heart device consultant to the federal Food and Drug Administration stated “Headphones contain magnets, and some of these magnets are powerful – I certainly don't think people should overreact to this information," However it's smart to keep small electronics at least a few inches from implanted medical devices, and not let someone wearing headphones lean against your chest if you have one.

This is another tip from Dianne reference ORGANIZING THEIR BATHROOM MEDICINE CABINET as she packed for their Fulltiming experience. Theirs was quite large so she organized like items together into used Nestle chocolate milk yellow plastic containers she had saved from when her granddaughter was little. Their oblong shape sits neatly on the shelves. She marked each one, such as "grooming tools" (nail clippers, tweezers, etc.), "Pet medicines," "Pain Relievers" etc. Now they see at a glance what’s where, instead of a jumble. This was her husband's favorite tip.

Carol shared this info reference STORAGE OF SPICES from 29th Nov Diary reference the tip re Storing Small Amounts Of Infrequently Used Spices In Film Canisters. As a result of a report she read several years ago, she shares this info – I am passing it on but I have no way of checking it for verification. The use of ‘Film Canisters’ for food items may and may not be recommended. Years ago Carol read some Traveling Tips that recommended using them for small quantities of prescription pills/over the counter medications. Not long afterwards – a follow-up report stated it was NOT advisable to use them for anything that would be ingested. The plastic containers weren't recommended for edibles because chemicals could leach out into the contents. Washing them out did not make them safe. It is your choice.

A Newbie and new Fulltimer Diane shared 3-MORE OF HER MEGA PACKING TIPS. She offered many hints after she read my Packing Tips E-Book. This girl is organized for sure.
*** She uses her Food Saver to vacuum pack opened packages of chocolate chips, etc. for travel.
*** Empty plastic peanut butter jars make superior storage for rice, specialty flours, etc. They’re lightweight plus they keep moisture and insects out. She tapes cooking directions to each jar.
*** Diane didn’t want to be without her bread machine. She even makes hamburger buns and pizza crust with the dough cycle. By replacing her original large machine with a small lightweight model she freed up space. The small loaves are a better size for the two of them.

Although Snopes says this is a Real Virus, it’s not new and according to them it’s NOT the worst identified by CNN. They say it may do damage but it won’t likely burn up your hard Drive. I just caution everyone to check for Spam in any email with a link – Hover your mouse over the link – if it comes up in the TaskBar with different site than the words on the link, it’s probably Spam or worse. Be cautious if you receive a card that appears to come from a friend. DON’T CLICK THE LINK to pick up that card – instead GO to the website by typing the URL in the Address Bar. I checked this out on Snopes.com and I’m happy to say that they don’t contain much more than door access code. Diane will soon be a Fulltimer and she found a way to store SMALL AMOUNTS OF SPICES she doesn’t use often in old photo canisters. REALLY small amounts of the ones she hardly ever uses but ‘might’, she adds to small plastic containers from ‘paint-by-number’ kits, with the flip-up lid. In the past she kept harvested flower seeds in these containers. After washing them, they’re great lightweight storage for very small amounts of spices. This way she has a wide selection of most spices from her kitchen. "Leftovers" she gave to her daughter. Diane hung the larger containers with Velcro to the back of a cabinet above the other items. The small ones are stored in a baking pan on top of other items – this tip is from my books. She then added small labels or marker indications on the tops for easy identification.

TIPS THIS WEEK – Not enough space to post all the Tips and Promos I received this week – will share more in a future issue.

Dianne bought my Packing Tips e-book and she loved several of what she read. Here are a three of a variety of more tips she sent me. This lady is very organized to say the least. Thanks so much for sharing.

***They added all of THEIR MUSIC ON AN IPOD – to eliminate carrying excess CD's or tapes. They added an IPOD SPEAKER PORT to play the music on when parked, and an attachment to the motorhome radio to play the Ipod songs when traveling.

***They purchased a ‘KINDLES’ FROM AMAZON.COM and no longer need to buy hard copy books. Details HERE. They even subscribed to Time magazine on the Kindle. In fact, after Dianne received my e-book, she moved it to her Kindle and read it from there (there's a way to do that via an e-mail address that Amazon gives Kindle buyers). The only hard copy books she’s taking with them are a few Fulltimer books she has purchased (including my 21st Century book) and a few travel-related books, bird books, etc. They can even subscribe to certain Sunday newspapers via the Kindle, if we decide to.

She has spent months scanning family photos and transferring other digital photos of past family camping trips, etc., onto a DIGITAL PHOTO FRAME. This way, they will have a continual slide show of all of favorite photos. The old family photos she then distributed to children, cousins, and others, only storing a fraction of them. They are enjoying the digital photo frame while still in our ‘sticks + bricks’ house, and feel it will be a treasure even more so in the motorhome. These photos had been packed away for years, so to be able to enjoy them anew is a plus. As they take new photos during their travels, they can simply plug in the digital camera smart card to add to the slide show. More tips from Dianne in future issues.

But this alternate use works 100% of the time, although those who discovered it aren't sure why. To stop NIGHTTIME COUGHING in a child or adult – put Vicks Vapo rub generously on the bottom of the feet at bedtime, then cover with socks. Even persistent, heavy, deep coughing will stop in about 5 minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief. Works 100% of the time and is more effective in children than even very strong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly. Apparently cough medicines in kids frequently does more harm than good - due to their chemical make-up. It was a surprise finding- plus it seems to be more effective than prescribed medicines for children at bedtime, in addition it has a soothing and calming effect on sick children who then went on to sleep soundly.

THE VETERAN ON OUR TEN-DOLLAR BILL - In honour of Canada's Nov 11th – shared by Don

***Look at the back right-hand side of a Canadian $10 bill, to see an old veteran standing at attention near the Ottawa war memorial. Robert Metcalfe died recently at the age of 90.
***The fact he lived to that age is rather remarkable, given what happened in the World War II. Born in England, he was one of the 400,000 members of the British Expeditionary Force sent to the mainland. They found themselves facing the new German warfare technique - the Blitzkrieg. ***He was treating a wounded comrade when he was hit in the legs by shrapnel. En route to hospital, his ambulance came under fire from a German tank, which then miraculously ceased fire. ***Evacuated from Dunkirk on HMS Grenade, two of the sister ships with them were sunk. When he recovered, he was sent to allied campaigns in North Africa and Italy. En route, his ship was chased by the German Battleship Bismarck.
***In North Africa he served under General Montgomery against the Desert Fox, Rommel. He was sent into the Italian campaign, where he met his future wife, a lieutenant and physiotherapist in a Canadian hospital. They were married in the morning by the mayor of the Italian town, and again in the afternoon by a British padre.
***After the war they settled in Chatham, England, where he went into politics and became the warden (chairman) of the county and on his retirement he and his wife moved to Ottawa. At the age of 80 he wrote a book about his experiences.
***One day out of the blue he received a call from a government official asking him to go downtown for a photo op. He wasn't told what the photo was for or why they chose him. 'He had no idea he would be on the bill,' his daughter said.
***And now you know the story of the old veteran on the $10 bill.

Pat and Dennis from Hylo, Alberta shared these tips.
*** They took a 4-inch led back-up light from a large truck and mounted it on the crank-up TV antenna to use as a yard light. By rotating the antenna it directs the light to the picnic table or wherever they need it.
*** They also mounted an old car horn in the 5th wheel hitch. It has a push button switch inside near the door. Pat used it to call Dennis off the lake when dinner was ready. At night the loud horn moves bears or other prowlers away from our camp.
*** He bought rare earth magnets in ‘Lee Valley’ that he was able to connect to the bathroom door and to the stairs where the opened door contacted. On the stairs he hid the magnet into the rug with a wood screw. Their door now stays put even if the trailer is not perfectly level. These magnets are quite small and very strong with many uses.
*** They use their trailer as a home office and re-supply depot while selling their artwork to gift shops and trade shows. During winter they create their art and most of the summer they roam the country selling it. They stretch a short 1-2 day delivery out for a week or longer and enjoy an extended RV trip in the process.

*** Postcard Virus – no matter whom sends it to you do not click a link. These are not new just making the rounds again. A postcard image will open that will burn you entire hard drive.
*** Greeting Cards from a friend is also on the move one more time. To pick-up a legitimate card go to the website listed through your browser NOT by clicking a link – no matter who it says it is from. Then enter the card number as requested in the email.
***The UPS Delivery Failure (sometimes FedEx too) is again on the move. This email also misspells the word ‘packet’ and requests you print the attached invoice copy. DO NOT DO THIS. Opening the email to reach the attachment will launch the virus

TIPS THIS WEEK are of a personal nature

MORE RV LIFE LESSONS - It seems the longer we are on the road the more life lessons that surface. I think we must be well over 16,500 by now. I am sharing three more from this trip.

#1 On Saturday we decided to stop at a Wal*Mart to add to the larder. When we went to pull in they had barriers restricting height at 12’.6”. to control the 18-wheelers. We think???? we are less than that but even though I preach to everyone to post their height and width on their dash for easy reference – we do not have it posted on ours. We felt because we do not drive the motorhome on ‘back roads’ we really had no need for the info – WRONG!!!! Everyone should have the height and width posted on their dash – us too.

#2 While in London it was cold and blowing viciously. We meet a lot of RVers who know us through the website, or magazine articles, or Diary, or my seminars. Many knock on our door to say Hi! We sometimes go outside to talk to them – at times we also invite these RV ‘strangers’ into our coach. At the Fly J in London during the snowstorm, a man knocked on our door with the request he had an “RV QUESTION FOR THE MAN HE SAW OUTSIDE?” We thought he had come from one of the other RV’s at the Flying J. Mainly due to the weather we invited him in where it was warm. It didn’t take long to realize this gentleman was not an RVer. We are not sure what he was after but his appearance was not threatening – however we both realized we could have been in trouble? His RV Q was kind of empty, but we shared a few stories about the times he spent in the Maritimes when John was there in the Navy and then he left. He said he was in the area to visit clients for an investment company he worked for, but that too is suspect. The final phase of this drama was when we returned from dinner there was a gift of ‘two instant cameras’ in our door with a beautiful note relaying one was for the ‘sunsets’ and one was for the ‘sunrises’ we see on our journey. He was sharing them as a thank you for our hospitality.

Why I am relaying this? From the time we have began RVing we have heard about the danger of putting your names on your RV’s and opening the doors to strangers, especially at gas/fuel stops or when you are boondocking. In 24 years this is the first time our outgoing welcoming demeanor could have gotten us into trouble. If the climate had not been so bad, John possibly would have gone out to talk. Thankfully in our case, this episode did not end up in disaster – instead it made for an interesting break in our day – NEXT TIME WE WILL RAISE OUR GUARD JUST A LITTLE. I suggest all of you do the same. Become a bit cautious and travel ‘Street Smart” – everyone at your door may not be a super friendly harmless RVer who just wants to talk.

#3 We made one other slip while dealing with our maintenance problems in London. We had connected and disconnected the car several times. Guess I became distracted because on the last hook-up I FORGOT to remove one fuse. After 2.5 days driving, our car-battery is ‘dead’. I obviously neglected to do a double check. Many RVers follow a written check list and a retired engineer told me one day, when you do not physically ‘touch’ the item you are checking that it is easy to not see your error. Soooooo again I stress. No matter what system you use ALWAYS double check what you have done. You would think I would learn to eventually avoid all these life lessons. If they can happen to us they can happen to you. DOUBLE CHECK – DOUBLE CHECK - DOUBLE CHECK!!!!

Bill sent me an email that I have received several times over the years about the FIRE HAZARD DANGERS OF GLADE PLUG-IN AIR FRESHENERS. When I verified the story on SNOPES.COM, I learned that GLADE Fresheners have safety features built into them. However not all such fresheners by other manufacturers may not include the same precautions or shutdown features. Those fresheners could overheat and cause a fire. Through the Net in Google RV Alerts I keep hearing of RV fires happening almost weekly someplace – maybe the world is getting smaller and we hear about every disaster in all locations. As a result, John and I are extra careful about shutting things down when we are not around and before bed. All we can say is be sure your unit is mechanically sound and you have working smoke alarms/CO monitors at the ready. Fire destroys things so fast in an RV

Bill also shared that everyone should be vigilant when PAYING MEDICAL BILLS – he is from California. He suggests it is wise to fight ‘Balance Billing’ – that means if a Dr overcharges for your services. Read your invoice carefully and do not be afraid to contact your Insurance.

As health-care costs continue to soar, millions of confused consumers pay for medical charges they don't actually owe. Typically this occurs when insurance plans cover less than what a doctor, hospital, or lab service wants to be paid. The health-care provider at times will demand the balance from the patient. The patient is afraid of receiving calls from a debt collector, so they pay up. This happened to us a few months after John’s illness a few years ago, but since we had $5 million medical insurance coverage we did not pay it – we called our insurance.

This hassle is called ‘Balance Billing’ and apparently common practice, but it’s illegal. When doctors or hospitals think an insurer has reimbursed too little – they sometimes illegally pressure patients to pay the difference. State and federal laws prohibit the medical providers from patient contact. Instead, doctors and hospitals should deal directly with insurers. Economists and patient advocates estimate that consumers pay $1 billion or more a year for which they're not responsible. DO NOT PAY THESE EXTRA FEES.

Top 10 Tips for Safe Propane Use in Your RV – (I USED the first 4-Tips in…Issue 20)

****Do not use portable propane camping equipment such as camp stoves, barbecues or radiant heaters in your RV. They are designed for use OUT OF DOORS.
****KNOW THE SIGNS of CO POISONING. If anyone shows signs of carbon monoxide poisoning (headaches, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, impaired judgment, loss of manual dexterity) have everyone leave the RV and get medical attention.
****EVERYONE NEEDS AN ALARM. Install both a Propane & Carbon Monoxide alarm.
****BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR CYLINDER. Never use, store or transport propane cylinders or liquid fuels in the passenger space or living area of your RV!!! Don't transport or use containers that are damaged, show signs of corrosion, have been exposed to fire or appear to be leaking.
****TURN IT OFF WHEN REFUELING. When you stop to refuel your RV, be sure that all sources of ignition including pilot lights and engines are turned off or extinguished. Also, all occupants of the RV should leave the vehicle.
****BUY SMART. When buying a pre-owned RV, make sure it is safety inspected by a certified technician.

The BREAST CANCER site is having trouble convincing enough people to click on their site daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. I have received this email several times as well so I thought I would share it. I do not think that most Cdns have a problem obtaining a mammogram – at least not in Ontario. But there may be a woman worldwide who cannot easily obtain this valuable test. Breast Cancer does not have to be a death sentence, but with the help of regular breast exams and an annual Mammogram this type of cancer can be beaten.

It takes less than a minute to go to their SITE and click on 'donating a mammogram'. (Click on Pink Window in the middle). ‘Logging on’ does not cost you a thing. WARNING OF A NEW CDN SCAM - This one concerns Revenue Canada. An official looking Scam/phishing letter will arrive by regular mail. It requests those receiving it provide valuable personal info. The letter claims that there is “insufficient information” for the individual’s tax return and that in order to receive any “claims,” they will have to update their records. The letter attaches a form specifically requesting the individual’s personal information in writing, via fax or email, including information on bank accounts and passports. This letter is NOT from the CRA and Canadians should not provide their personal information to the sender. NEVER GIVE ANYONE VITAL INFO UNLESS YOU MADE THE CALL IN THE FIRST PLACE. ***Eliminate ear mites!!! All it takes is a few drops of Wesson Corn Oil in your cat's ear... massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat's skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates healing.
***Did you know that drinking two glasses of Gatorade could relieve headache pain almost immediately-without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional pain relievers?
***Did you know that Colgate Toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns?
***To relieve achy muscles from a bout of the flu? - Mix 1-tablespoon horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as a massage oil for instant relief for aching muscles.
***Smart splinter remover: Just pour a drop of Elmer's Glue-All or similar product over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue. This worked for Peggi
***Balm for broken blisters... to disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops of Listerine, a powerful antiseptic.
***Quaker Oats for fast pain relief ... it's not for breakfast any more! Mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in the microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to your hands for soothing relief from arthritis pain.

As we Cdns get ready to flock south, it is very important to CALL YOUR CREDIT CARD company to let them know you are going south just before or as soon as you cross the border. A new security measure the card companies have put in place – alerts most of them if card usage is undergoing outside of Canada. I didn’t believe it when our friends told us that their card was declined – but when it happened to us while trying to pay for fuel in Tampa we took it serious. A simple phone call corrected the problem but calling ahead prevents the embarrassment at the time.

I strongly recommend that every Cdn SNOWBIRD should listen to this long promo OF WHAT FOOD IS ALLOWED. If you get a message saying the lines are busy, follow the request to try later – in a minute or two you should get through.

Surprisingly SOFT CHEESES SUCH AS COTTAGE AND BRIE are on the forbidden list – this is a new one on me, some Pet Food too. Fish at this point seems OK. Checking before you set out stops surprises when you get to the border. BUT rest assured what you hear tomorrow could likely change before you leave. Whatever current diseases surface – the prohibitive foods change. John and I operate on the theory that if our FRIDGE IS EMPTY we avoid hassles. We routinely plan to stop at the first grocery store, or Wal*Mart Supercenter en route to re-stock. FYI – The Wal*Mart Atlas lists most W*M locations throughout the USA, especially in the USA version.

It is time for CDN SNOWBIRDS to prepare to head south. I phoned the US Customs Line I had from my summer seminars about WHAT FOODS WE CAN TAKE TO THE USA and of course the phone number I verified as accurate in June was not being answered yesterday. Government Departments are notorious for changing phone numbers and websites. They drive me nuts. Well I then called the Cdn Customs in Winnipeg at 1-204 983-3500 and that agent gave me this number – 1-703-526-4200. Sometimes I listened to a message requisitioning to try later.

BUT, I strongly recommend that everyone should listen to this long promo OF WHAT FOOD IS ALLOWED plus two other numbers for follow-up – I received messages at both these numbers – they wanted to call me back but since our cell in the park is iffy at times, I chose not leave a message.

I was surprised to see that SOFT CHEESES SUCH AS COTTAGE AND BRIE were forbidden – this is a new one on me, some Pet Food too. Fish at this point seems OK. Checking before you set out stops surprises when you get to the border. BUT rest assured what you hear tomorrow could likely change before you leave. Whatever current diseases surface changes the prohibitive foods.

John and I operate on the theory that if our FRIDGE IS EMPTY we avoid hassles. We routinely check ahead to see where the first grocery store, or Wal*Mart Supercenter is en route – we simply re-stock. The Wal*Mart Atlas lists most W*M locations throughout the USA, especially in the USA version. We find when we off-load all meat and suspect items – our crossings are easier.

The DATE FOR A PASSPORT for Land and Sea travel has been moved to Jun 2009 – This promo explains that as well. However if you need to fly home in an emergency, you cannot get on a plane without a passport – even in an air-evac. Wise RV Travellers carry with a Passport.

Rick and Joy relayed this from the Dryden Newspaper. *** OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) relayed that a JEEP BEING TOWED BY A MOTOR HOME SEPARATED when the attachment broke – the jeep crossed into the eastbound lane and came to rest in the south ditch – no injuries.

FULL STORY… The RVer felt a sudden jerk before he saw his toad travel across the highway into the ditch. The SUV suffered minor damage but they were able to continue their trip following repairs. The hitch and the attachment points for the safety cables were attached all in one point – when it broke free and the toad was on its way. FOR SAFETY - ALWAYS attach safety cables separated from your hitch. INSPECT the welding of your hitch and safety cable attachment point.

John and I had a toad disconnect in the 80's while travelling Mexico, but thankfully for us one hook of our safety chain kept the car attached. The nut on the bottom of our ball had worked loose and disappeared when we went around a very sharp corner. We travelled about 20km before we realized it - days before back-up cameras were popular. Following our experience, we heard of about five more similar situations - some cars went over the mountains.

We realized our problem across the street from a Mechanic and a Machine shop. Between these two they found a ‘nut’ they could modify, so they could ‘Arm-strong’ it in place. All for a $15.00 fee - Go figure, but we were in Mexico. Our hitch these days folds and stays on our MH.

Hey!!! The Forum is back up thanks to my super Webserver But I am posting the entire Diary FYI.

I was not sure when this Diary would be on line HERE (I'm Happy to report It's up today - Hooray!!!) In the meantime my FULL DIARY including the TIPS AND PROMOS is posted Sunday morning to this Blog for reference. The Forum is back up, Thanks Big Time to my super Webserver But I am posting the entire Diary FYI.

Hi All: All too often technology jumps up and bites me in the butt. Well yesterday when I attempted to add a NEW FORUM that would allow ‘RVERS WHO HAVE RV BLOGS’ to post their URL along with a short BIO to my forum page (Now that Forum is ready for input!!!- PLEASE add your RV BLOG soon). I accidentally DELETED all my forums. I did not understand the new PHP Format. My webserver SuperWebHost.com is usually off over the weekend (BUT they worked overtime this weekend - thanks so much Matthew)– sooooo now – All forums are BACK UP. Thankfully my Webserver found them in a back-up file. If anyone made a post on Oct 3rd you may have to post again. I apologize to those who visit regularly for the delay!!! I am happy that this has had a good ending. I now ask each RV Blogger to add their URL and BIO Promo to the appropriate forum – since everything is
working again as it should.

Today SATURDAY, John and I VOTED in Canada’s advance Polls. Our election is on the 14th October and of course we will not be at our permanent address. When I called the main ‘Canada Vote’ number to ask for directions to the ‘Poll Booth’, the girl that answered the phone said we had to ‘vote’ in Trenton. THIS IS WRONG!!! The Reps in Woodstock had forms they filled out and our ‘vote’ will be mailed to our home riding. All we needed was proof of our Trenton address – it was on our drivers Licence. We were even able to even vote for our candidates in Trenton – no need to vote for local candidates. NOTE: Every F/Ter should have an official home base address for many reasons such as Census, drivers Licence, voting, Medical (Cda-Provincial), passports, border agents, plus numerous more. FYI Advance Polls remain open for Monday. In both countries it is so important to find a way to GET OUT AND VOTE. Some USA states are now allowing Fulltimers to vote – worth the research to check things out.

Braemar Valley RV Park Association hosted an impromptu Karaoke social hour SATURDAY afternoon and tomorrow, SUNDAY, an early social hour; a decadent THANKSGIVING DINNER; plus dance is planned. FYI – Canada’s Thanksgiving Day is the second Monday in October – Turkey is the meat of choice. This feast is no cost for residents who pay $10.00 to belong to the Park Association.

The economy has been BAD this week and everything is topsy-turvy. But remember BAD NEWS sells. Life events are cyclical – overtime the ups and downs will level off. As a bit of proof, we bought gas yesterday for $107.6 ($3.78 per US Gal) that was the newest low that we have seen for a long time. Today in Woodstock it was posted at $1.06.7 – yes things do differ in various areas of the country but just like the USA/Cdn $$$$ exchange, the price changes from day-to-day. The stock market is definitely volatile right now as it goes through many ups and downs. But the ‘Experts’ advise that none of us should panic and do anything foolish. They stress we should take a deep breath and allow the ‘EBBS AND FLOWS’ to ‘Play-Out’ till the bad news once again becomes the kind that does not receive unfavourable press. Remember to ‘Always look at life through the windshield – NOT the rear-view mirror’.

Thankfully for us Canadians, we have not been hit as hard as the USA mainly because we have different banking and investment rules - for now we hope our government keeps things in check. Yesterday, FRIDAY, we visited our RV Dealer, Sicards Holiday Campers, in Smithville near Hamilton, Ontario. They have greatly expanded their dealership recently and sales have still been quite brisk this summer. However we all are aware that new buyers are paying so much less for their dream machines than they would have a few years ago. So even if gas/fuel continues to rise, with careful planning and shortening the distances you travel – it is not too difficult to continue to enjoy this fantastic RV lifestyle.

One covers our trip 10-days earlier to McNaughton’s Home Hardware in Newbury, Ontario to watch the cooking presentation by Phyllis and Lamont – ‘THE COOKING LADIES’. The second album highlights the impressive VETERAN’S PARADE that we watched at the London Fair late August. FYI, all albums are more interesting when viewed as a SLIDESOW.

On THURSDAY While in Stratford to pick up weekly MAIL, I found a great store ‘Cartridge World’ (519-273-5777) that REFILLS CARTRIDGE for a very low price. I had filled 3-black ones on Sunday, but for some reason they wouldn’t print. Thanks Joel and Rob for being there.

Next stop was to meet Jan and Bill plus Rod and Mary for lunch at the incredible ‘IRON SKILLET RESTAURANT’ in Woodstock Ontario (1-519 -421-9779). Prices are fair, atmosphere great plus they allowed us to ‘sit and talk’ for as long as we wanted. These four are brand NEW FULLTIMERS heading south to Texas for the very first time. It is such fun to be around the contagious excitement they exude. Jan and Bill are bird-watchers so they’re beginning their winter in Mission at the western end of the Rio Grande Valley. Rod and Mary are travelling south with us this October – this will be the first winter for them in the Valley and we’re honoured they will be neighbours in Alamo Palms.

We are kicking off our journey with dinner at the FLYING J IN LONDON on the 27th Oct. Anyone in the area that day, why not join us? It’ll be great to have you two along because we have been over this route many times - so on this trip we’ll be seeing things in a different light. This week Cheryl and Don – also brand new F/T RVers – emailed us. They’ll be spending all or part of the winter at Alamo Palms. This is shaping up to be a fantastic season - with luck you guys will enjoy our favourites stopping spots and for sure we’ll experience their exciting first time insight of their discovery.

I’m continuing to finish several RV magazine stories and my website is crying for an update. Guess everything will unfold as we expect in time. We have another busy week ahead again. It’s time to finish off-loading excess ‘stuff’ from this poor overloaded motorhome. We are getting to the end of the elimination, but not finished yet. The LUXOR will breath a sigh of relief we’re sure. Must go for now guys. Be extra cautious for obstacles lying on the road such as a chair or stepladder that has fallen of a vehicle. We’ve come across ‘things’ like this more than once. Stay away from ‘Orange Barrels’ and ‘Road-Gaiters’ (shredded tires). ‘Travel safe’, P&J.

In my Google RV Alerts this week, 83-year old GAYLORD MAXWELL was honoured as a lost Icon in the RV World. He started the ‘Life on Wheels RV Schools’ in the USA plus he was a huge part of the Trailer Life planning staff. He will be greatly missed. As late as the first week in September 2008, Gaylord taught 4-Life on Wheels classes at the Pennsylvania RV and Camping Show in Hershey PA.

Another warning in this week’s Google RV Alerts! BEWARE OF WHERE YOU ARE WHEN YOU OPEN YOUR SLIDE. When a man didn’t return for dinner they searched for him. Apparently he was fatally squashed between the wall of a storage area and his extended slide – it was determined this was caused by an upsetting freak accident.

John H shared this point a few weeks ago when I stated we joined the CDN SAM’S CLUB during an Open House. He stated that many Sam Clubs in the U.S. now have UNMANNED GAS BARS that often offer prices that are significantly lower than nearby gas stations. There may be a problem that our Canadian membership card may not work. We plan to ask if we can add a secondary USA address to our Cdn Card when we are in the USA next time like we have done on our Cdn Credit Cards. If not it may be better to buy a Sam’s Club membership in the U.S.

Carol, Our Breeder loves to hike but she is also very SENSITIVE TO POISON IVY. Her POISON IVY/OAK PREVENTATIVE TIP – When skin contacts poison ivy (i.e. leaves or plants brushing legs) wipe it with a towelette containing rubbing alcohol (not w/cream base) or paper towel saturated with rubbing alcohol. Remove clothes carefully and machine launder thoroughly – wash hands after touching them. The rubbing alcohol treatment should be used within 4-hours of contact. She CARRIES A SMALL BOTTLE AND PAPER TOWELS in a zip lock bag in her car, and in her hiking backpack. Alternative if no rubbing alcohol is available: rinse skin thoroughly with cold water, from water bottle, stream, lake etc. This is 100% effective for her sensitive skin.

Added tip: after walking in poison ivy, SCUFF SOLES AND SIDES OF YOUR SHOES well on grass or gravel. Machine wash shoes too if possible as you can get poison ivy later from shoes the oils have penetrated. Beware: keep DOGS AND CATS away from poison ivy; although they are immune to and not affected by poison ivy, humans can get it from touching their pets fur.

This week’s RV TRAVEL.COM NEWSLETTER HIGHLIGHTS that bad news sells more copy than good things. Several more RV Plants are closing because inventory shipping has dropped to all time lows. This makes it a PERFECT TIME TO BUY A NEW RV at a record low price; but be aware that a new RV Warrantee may not be valid if the company closes its doors in the future. THOSE WHO HAVE A UNIT TO SELL must deal with a different situation. It might be wiser to enjoy the use of your RV for another year or two rather than give it away in 2008. Considering the resale value of today, waiting till the market begins to recover if you can just might be the better move. THOSE WHO FINANCED THEIR RV will probably find it has depreciated faster than your mortgage dropped. I know we will not be giving our classy LUXOR away, so when we can’t drive it anymore we will park it and enjoy it as a summer home.

#1 SUNBURNS AND/OR SWOLLEN EYES – No matter how we try, the occasional sunburn slips through; to alleviate the redness and the soreness, try using wet tea bags on the specific sites. The same remedy works on those big, puffy under-eyes that are so unattractive in the morning. (Hint: Too much salt in your diet may cause swelling). The itch and burn of mosquito bites are relieved with an application of rubbing alcohol or white vinegar. And, of course, that same white vinegar mixed with a little water performs miracles on windows, mirrors and other glass.

#3… LOCKS ON MAIN RV DOOR HANDLES ARE UNIVERSAL… An Idaho RV dealer was burglarized last week of six flat screen TVs from six trailers. It turned out that all the RVs were locked, but only with their door locks, not the deadbolt locks. "All RV door locks are the same -- one key fits all," a spokesman for the dealership said in so many words. What this means to you and me is: be sure, when you lock your RV, ALWAYS USE THE DEADBOLT LOCK. If you use the wimpy regular door lock, then any other RVer can use his or her key to get into your rig. Most RVers are good people, so they would never do such a thing. But there are a few bad dudes lurking and they will. So be careful.

TIP FROM PEGGI – Locks on your outside storage pod doors are also universal. We always lock ours to ensure they don’t open during transit, but we are aware that any other person with a key to their locks can probably open ours. Sooooo we keep no valuables in these pods.

Bill shared this info – a question surfaced while he was reading an extensive article in FMCA reference CONSIGNMENT OF RV'S. From Bill’s research he found that most USA companies are not insuring RV'S while on consignment since they are not in the care, custody and control of the insured – plus the dealer is not covering them either. However Vehicles do have coverage while in a storage as long as collision and comprehensive are on them depending on the claim.

I AM HAPPY TO REPORT when I asked Wayfarer Insurance – leader in Cdn RV Insurance – this Q; I was assured RV’s in a CDN CONSIGNMENT LOT they’d be covered because you still own the unit – not the dealer. Details HERE or 800-461-031.

COMPUTER VIRUS WARNINGS ARE CIRCULATING AGAIN. Bonnie relayed the POSTCARD/E-CARD threats are making the rounds. One says, “You have a Postcard” in the subject line, another is “A Family member/friend sent you and E-Card”. Don’t click on the attachment or link.

Dennis sent the info about the “OSAMA BIN LADEN” email – this email may have an attachment that says ‘He Has Died’ or ‘He’s Been Captured or Hanged’ etc. Immediately delete ALL this type of email.

THESE ARE BOTH DANGEROUS and frequently they appear (in error) to come through from a family or friend. Both have been checked out on Snopes. If you open either, they will destroy your C- Drive. Heed these warnings and be cautious of opening ANY email or suspicious links.

Bill shares info on the NEW THREAT TO WOMAN AT GAS STATIONS. The email contains a long story but in a word – a serial rapist has found a unique way to win the trust of woman. In the email version, he is a clean cut individual that tells you as you are driving away that you dropped $5 or $10 in the store while you were paying for gas. He wants you to open the window so he can give it to you. He looks like a kind hearted concerned individual. If you do not accommodate him he gets very angry. BUT if you open your door or window you are at his mercy. Be safe and be sure to drive away, let the police know of the encounter – it may not be anything but you could save your life if you do not accepted the cash.

A caller claiming to be from the Credit Card Company attempts to obtain the LAST THREE SECURITY NUMBERS ON THE BACK OF YOUR CR CD. They provide you with all the info on your card – they don’t have to ask for it because they already know the answers. The only question they don’t have is the 3-digit security numbers. The call sounds very official and they even give you a phone number to call for follow-up info – it’s supposedly from the Card Fraud Office. They state that a large purchase has gone through your account that day and they are verifying you have your card in your possession – so they need these numbers. DO NOT GIVE THIS INFO TO ANYONE THAT CALLS YOU. If you have called someone, it is OK to share the numbers. The caller may state they want to make a refund to your account, or stop the use of the card until the security is checked etc. – absolutely anything to get those 3-numbers. I have shared this info in the past but Bernie and Heather passed it on again. It is important enough to repeat. When using your CREDIT CARD IN EITHER USA OR CDA at a gas station or on-line etc, frequently you are asked for a ‘ZIP Code’ or ‘Postal Code’. Cdn Credit Card holders now have a way to add a ‘ZIP Code’ to your ‘Cdn Card’. (I see no reason why it would not work for Americans visiting Canada). Travellers with a regular address in the USA (winter residence or mail forwarding etc.) can ask Visa or MC etc. to add it as a SECONDARY ADDRESS to your file. All billing and other transactions continue to go through your Cdn address. Advantage is – if you’re pumping gas, you can punch in that ZIP code and receive service without running a security risk by leaving your Credit Card in the station office. Bernie’s bank suggested that for major purchases you should use your Cdn address – I leave that decision to you. John and I have also added our USA mail forwarding address to our MC – but neither us, nor Bernie have had a chance to test its effectiveness. It is worth a try.

OUT OF COUNTRY MEDICAL INSURANCE is high on the minds of all Cdns. Some companies also sell Insurance to VISITORS TO CANADA. File these numbers so you will have access to them before your next trip.

Many companies offer great plans. Those mentioned below are small sampling of various features you’d find in your search. Each company offers different options and the price paid depends on your age, length of time away AND your individual answers to the health questions. Don’t fudge your answers, because before a claim is paid they will verify your health history. Many will add Top-up Insurance ( I.E Extend a policy you may have with your work).

***CARP – John and I find this one works best for us. Their standard policy is 5-Million and they also upgrade the No-Cost 40 days from PSHCP (Public Service Health Care Plan – some Federal Employees are members). That plan covers members anytime they travel up to 40 days out of province. Coverage is $500,000 but CARP will upgrade it to 5 Million as well for much less than $100. in most age brackets. They also offer $2-$500 and higher deductible PLUS BP meds only have to be stable for 3-months – everything else for 6-months. Travellers MUST check out the best one for you. Please, NO one cross the border without it. When John was in the hospital for a week in Florida a year ago after he was diagnosed with a superbug. He also was treated as an out-patient by a Infectious Disease doctor. We then went home for 33 days - no one really found the cause BUT that experience cost the Insurance company $45,000 and John had no operation - just a battery of tests.

LAST INSURANCE THAT EVERYONE SHOULD CARRY IS AN ‘ERS’ (Emergency Road Service). One ‘no-cost’ Service Call more than pays for your annual membership. Many policies are available, but the ones that are most common for RVers are those promoted by RV Clubs. Explorer RV Club (Cda’s National RV Club) - Good Sam Club (Int’l) - Family Motor Coach Assoc (motorhome owners Int’l) and Escapees RV Club Again it is most important to shop around – just ensure you don’t leave home without an ERS plan of some kind. They mostly work the same way but some offer more benefits than others. Out advice is to compare benefits as well as cost.

Tom stores his cooking liqueur and wine in a special commercial padded WINE STORAGE container under his sink. No more clanking or brown bags or wine boxes required. Because he also removed all shelves in this area, he now has space to store eight rolls of paper towels beside the wine to keep everything in place. These wine holders should be available in stores such as Sam’s Club or Costco or even Container Store etc.

Two more tips on HOW TO FORWARD EMAIL from Rod – first three tips in 26 July diary…

#4... ALWAYS hit your Forward button from the actual e-mail you are reading. Ever get those e-mails that you have to open 10 times to reach the one page with the information on it? By Forwarding from the actual page you wish someone to view, you eliminate the need for them to open numerous e-mails just to see what you sent. The more often an address appears in and email the more chance you could pick up a virus. (NOTE: This may not work with AOL).

#5... If you receive an email that is a PETITION asking you to add your name plus email address before you forward it to 10 or 15 people or to your entire address book. NOTE: The sent email will collect thousands of names and email addresses. However the info on the completed petition is actually worth considerable dollars to professional Spammers. If you plan to support the petition, why not send a personal letter to the intended recipient. Your position may carry more weight as a personal letter than a laundry list of names and email address. (Think about it, who is supposed to send the petition on? By the way email CANNOT be traced, it just isn't so!)

I hired a plumber to help restore an old farmhouse, and after he finished a rough first day on the job where a flat tire cost him an hour of work; his electric drill quit and his ancient one ton truck refused to start. While I drove him home, he sat in stony silence – he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands.

When opening the door he underwent an amazing transformation. His face was wreathed in a smile, he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss. Afterwards when walking me to my car, we passed the tree and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier. 'Oh, that's my trouble tree,' he replied 'I know I can't help having troubles on the job, but one thing's for sure, those troubles don't belong in the house with my family. So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home and ask God to take care of them.

In the morning I pick them up again.' 'Funny thing is,' he smiled,' when I come out in the morning to pick 'em up, there aren't nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before'. Travel Safe all. P&J

Donna shared this Security Tip reference using CREDIT CARDS AT GAS STATIONS. You may already know this--I didn't. People are getting really desperate due to the constantly rising gas prices. After using your credit/debit card to purchase gas at the pump (like most of us do), we take our receipt. However, while a co-worker of Donna’s was checking her statement, she found two unknown – $50 charges added to it. Apparently because she didn’t press the ‘clear’ button on the pump, the employee inside the store was able to use her card to purchase his/her own gas!

To keep this from happening, after you get your receipt, ALWAYS press the 'CLEAR' button or your information will be stored until the next customer inserts their card. The sender stated she had never noticed the ‘Clear’ button but when she got gas the other day – it was there. Look for it.

Last tip is from Bill. His 4-year old MH needed new WIPER BLADES. They used a 28” Tru-vision model with a center-mounting hole – a screw and nylock nut attach them. No local dealers or Camping World ($36. each) or the local Workhorse shop ($54. each) had them in stock. Apparently Tru-vision recommends they be replaced 3 times per year – (I’m not sure why…or who changes wipers that often). Tru-vision did not return Bill’s several emails.

He found a brand at Wal*Mart by Anco – with a minor modification of drilling out the rivet and increasing the hole size to 3/16” they are easily installed using the original hardware – best part is they were only $6.00 each – total $12. – sure beats the original quote of $108 per pair.

We have recently discovered three outstanding CLEANING PRODUCTS…

***#1 The first is ADVANTAGE from Go Clean.com. This product was specially designed for Mary Findley’s (a.k.a. Mary Moppin’s) site. John has been using Advantage to polish the upper portion of the LUXOR and it once again sparkles. He added a second coat for outstanding results. Mary wrote a great article of tips for cleaning RVers HERE. Click on the ‘Go Clean’ banner and then onto ‘RV’ for an abundance of more cleaning tips. Mary does offer items for sale at economical prices, but she also has a lot of very valuable No-Cost info on her website. John highly recommends ADVANTAGE – he applied it with the special baby diaper cleaning clothes from Mary as well.

***#2 SPRAY NINE…During our house cleaning we found a sample spray bottle of Spray Nine. This Item is available in many stores but as we found out it is an outstanding cleaning product for many surfaces. Our oak stained kitchen cupboards looked badly marked from the oil on our hands due to use. We cleaned the doors with Spray Nine and all the ‘icky’ residue came off. The brass handles also came up to a shimmering finish. In Wal*Mart we bought a big bottle and over this summer we plan to add a clean fresh finish to all our kitchen cupboards (maybe to all cupboards eventually). Again we both highly recommend SPRAY NINE.

***#3 Last winter we discovered AWESOME – available in the USA $$$ Stores. It usually comes in a spray bottle – but it can be diluted and occasionally you may find it in a refill size container as well. Sometimes you may find Totally Awesome Orange or Totally Awesome for Pet accidents too. It will CLEAN most hard surfaces although you may need to add an extra application of a wax to make it shimmer. Without exaggerating – it is Totally AWESOME.

Part of John’s Job Jar this week was changing the RV WATER HEATER 4 ½” ANODE ROD by Camco in our ‘hot water tank’. This job should be done every 6 months, but sometimes ours lasts a bit longer. New RODS are available from most RV parts store. Full install details are on each package. The Anode Rod preserves the life of the tank by corroding itself instead of the tank. A new Rod is ½” in diameter and the one John removed from our tank looked like a pencil. Please change yours soon. If you don’t, over time water will corrode a metal tank.

On Jim’s advice from SURFlo Reps I have printed a reduced version of what should be done every 6-months if fulltiming and always before extended storage. If you can access the water pump – we can’t – all filters should be removed and the water pump screen cleaned.

Part of Jim’s article includes this procedure for sanitizing - important…

Multiply gallons of tank capacity by 0.13 (liters of tank capacity by 1.0); the result is the ounces (milliliters) of bleach needed to sanitize the tank.
Mix into solution the proper amount of bleach within a container of water.
Disconnect from city water and pour the solution into the fresh water tank (using a funnel with a flexible hose attached) and fill the tank with potable water. Note: wear old clothes as bleach has a tendency to ruin new clothing.
Open all faucets (hot and cold - including the exterior shower) allowing the water to run until the distinct odor of chlorine is detected. Close the faucets and allow the solution to remain in the pipes.
The standard solution must have four (4) hours of contact time to disinfect completely. Doubling the solution concentration allows for contact time of one (1) hour.
When the contact time is completed, drain the tank. Refill with potable water and purge the plumbing of all sanitizing solution by opening all faucets until you do not detect the smell of chlorine.

Last week I shared some promos of several Discount Clubs that help member RVers save cash on camping fees. However in this week’s RV Travel.com newsletter another suggestion is to CAMP AT CITY PARKS. I have promoted MUNICIPAL RV PARKS in small towns for years. Many Cdn towns and cities feature these gems with and without hook-ups – but there is no listing that I am aware of. If you see a camping sign while driving through town – why not follow it. According to this RV Travel.com post, these parks are quite common in the Midwest. Most are also quite reasonable – some might actually be NO charge or by donation – possibly you may be asked to even pay on the honour system. Why not set up camp and walk to town for a coffee. On a lighter note, my Internet friend Tom loves to GROW ROSES, but he also loves having CUT ROSES in his MH. He sent me several pictures of his picturesque display bowl noting that he left the small glass marbles from craft shops STILL IN THEIR PLASTIC NETTING. Tom bought his at Michael’s, but I have found them in numerous places. The netting and marbles act like a pin-cushion. They are perfect for inserting short-stemmed roses and small wild flowers. If you are fans of fresh flowers – why not give this trip a try.

In this week’s latest RVTravel.com newsletter, Editor Chuck discusses the massive RECALLS OF DOMETIC REFRIGERATORS. Original recall of 2-door fridges was between April 1997 ad May 2003. Now it goes to 2006 on some 2-door models. The updated recall also includes some regular models from 2004 to 2007. Read that story Here - OR CHECK WITH YOUR DEALER NOW. Check your modelHere.

All MH and trailers are part of this huge recall due to possible FIRE HAZARD. FYI Thor Industries and Fleetwood Enterprises - two of the largest U.S. makers of RVs - have reported recalls of on-board Dometic refrigerators in 231,351 motorhomes and travel trailers. Some RVers may have updated their fridge and may not receive the recall notices. Just be informed.

Rodney shared these tips he received on how to limit JUNK MAIL AND VIRUS’S – Great advice Rod – wish more users would follow it….. I will send the balance at another time.

Do you wonder WHY YOU GET VIRUSES OR JUNK MAIL? Don’t you hate it?

When you forward e-mail, and leave info left over from those who received the message before you -- namely lists of e-mail addresses & names - as the messages get forwarded, the list of these addresses builds, and builds, and builds – before long some someone receives a virus. They SEND that virus to every email address that has come across their computer. PLUS all these addresses are collected and sold to those who send junk mail. Senders hope you will follow a link in their junk email so they can accumulate pennies a hit.

HOW TO STOP IT? (NOTE with AOL you may??? have to cut and paste the content you want to share from the original email to a new blank email. Try not to forward what you get – users must open many email to read it).

*** When you forward an e-mail, DELETE all addresses that appear in the body of the message before the joke etc. Simply HIGHLIGHT AND DELETE them or backspace to remove them. It only takes a second. CLICK THE 'FORWARD' BUTTON FIRST and then you have full editing capabilities anywhere in the message. If you don't hit the forward button first you can’t edit.

*** Whenever you send an e-mail to more than one person, it is preferred you do NOT use the "To:" or "Cc:" fields to add e-mail addresses. By using the BCC: (blind carbon copy) field the email addresses are hidden. This way those you send to will only see their own e-mail address.

*** If you don't see your "BCC:" option in your email click on where it says TO: and a form appears where you can type an address in the BCC section OR highlight an address that appears and choose click on the BCC section - it's that easy. When you send to BCC: your message will automatically say 'Undisclosed Recipients' in the 'TO:' field of the people who receive it. You can also add your name in the TO Field. This way ALL those addresses are not shared with every Tom, Dick or Harry on the net someplace.

*** Last step is to REMOVE the 'FW:' in the subject line OR re-name it fix spelling and send.

ADD A USA ADDRESS TO A CDN (USA) CREDIT CARD: This is a tip mainly for Cdns but it may also work for Americans who spend extensive time in Canada. A letter in a recent RV Times magazine may be a good solution to a major problem. Many Cdns (& vice versa) do not carry a USA (Cda) credit card – as a result we do not have a ZIP (Postal) code to insert when pumping gas etc. Yes it is possible to open an account in a USA (Cdn) bank but since many of us travel around to various places and we choose not to do that. BUT if you have a semi permanent address in another country (of the park you regularly visit or a USA (Cda) mail forwarding service like us) your Cdn (USA) Cr Cd Company may add that location to your file. We did this last week to BofM MC. It does not change any aspects or payments or anything else with our Cdn Cd but it is supposed to allow us to punch in a ZIP code so we do not have to leave our Cr Cd in an office while we pumping. Although we added our address, at this point we have not had a chance to test it. This should work for on-line sales as well. For us that would mean Wal*Mart (previously we had to buy a store card) or Verizon (better deals for customers when we buy on line) etc. I hope this works out – at least I now have a USA address on my Cdn BofM Cd.

FLY J DISCOUNTS. We all know Flying J is going through discount changes. On the present program if you spend money in the store one month you worked up to a higher discount for next months gas/propane. But this program has been very confusing. For instance Cda’s 64+ locations are not giving discounts for any D purchases even if you spent money in the store/restaurant the previous month – gas/propane-yes, diesel-no. Many of us go to Fly J for a number o reasons – RV Island, small D pumps, dump station etc. but in this era of extra high gas/fuel prices any discount is appreciated. FMCA negotiated a special $.01 cent p/gal D Jun-Aug for its members if you had an FMCA Fly J card. Well now FMCA members can call Fly J at 888-438-3537 and they will add that discount to your original card if you share your F#. Fly J is again planning to offer the $.01 cent discount on D as of September if you use any RV Real Value Card. Not sure where the new rules stand ref gas/propane.

TIPS AND PROMOS Together this week

**** More info than a TIP - Our BORDER CROSSING last Monday was our SLOWEST ever. We usually cross at Sarnia/Port Huron but this time we were on the Bridge for 20 minutes and over an hour waiting to get through the gate. We did not realize the agents might have been on an Orange Alert because it was the day following July 4th weekend. At any rate when we got to the checkpoint, the Agent studied our passports in the greatest of detail beside his computer. He only asked us 3 Q – 1) Where are we from? 2) How many on board? 3) Where are we going? He couldn’t care less if we had food on board (of course we got rid of everything) or if we had the dog’s papers or anything else. Although there were 7-gates open on one side and 6 on the other, we sat at his gate a good 5 minutes. They even had extra staff along the bridge directing drivers into one lane or another. When he finished at his computer he gave us our PP’s back and said “Have a Good Day!’ I have relayed for a long time that we RVers can no longer hide, but after last Monday morning I am convinced that every detail of our last 75+ crossings were on the screen in front of him.

**** MAINTENANCE HICK-UPS keeps this lifestyle interesting. While checking into the park in a small community of Utica IL on Tuesday John discovered we had completely lost the pull rod/handle to the gray tank and the plastic handle on the black rod disintegrated when he touched it. No RV service facility was in the vicinity – and without parts we couldn’t dump. However all was not lost because a Wal*Mart Automotive Tech sent us to Midway Truck Parts at the next exit – they sell trailers, but mainly the combo style for farm animals – IE horses/camping etc. Guess what? Even though their RV Section was limited, they had the parts we required. Soooo never hesitate to search in unlikely places for things you may need.

**** But our MAINTENANCE EXCITEMENT was not over as yet, mainly because around suppertime on Wed – no water would come out of any hot tap. Guess we have another check valve problem – our valve seems to go every 4- 5-years even when quality ones are installed. That evening I phoned our friend Les Doll, a working RV Tech and Webhost of the progressive RVerscorner.com– and by our symptoms we need a new check valve. Oh well we’ve lots of water and a microwave/stove to heat water to wash dishes. All the places we go to have showers – so with our busy schedule we’ll cope till Coach-Care appoint on 21st. Not much more than a minor clitch in day-to-day living. At FMCA we are camped for a week without hook-ups anyway – life still goes on with or without hot water on board.

SPAM POSTS continue to plaque my inbox and I am sure yours too. Just tonight I got the email telling me I had a POST CARD from a family member. This is a VIRUS – do NOT click on anything in the email. Delete it immediately!!! I also receive numerous email to ‘Undisclosed Residents’ or ‘TO’. Or ‘even to a wrong email address’ that supposedly come from Pay Pal accounts or my Bank etc. – PLUS many offer me millions of $$$$ if I answer. Delete ALL – they are SPAM and NEVER click on a link or open these messages. THEY ARE ALL BAD!!!

This Tip from last week if in doubt… One test is to HOOVER OVER a link and look in the TaskBar at the bottom of your computer. If the Taskbar website URL that shows up is different than the one in the email LINK, you know you have a SPAM email.

Bill shared this HARMFUL VIRUS info. A message with a subject line "US Army crossed Iran's borders" is also a Virus - do NOT click on the URL. He removed most of the link so no one could accidentally click on it, but it started with http://newsworldnow…’.

After the ‘kids’ got into my purse last week and tackled my camera, Carol our breeder, sent this WARNING ABOUT XYLITOL (USED IN SUGAR FREE GUM, ETC). It has been checked out on Snopes.com and it is true – entire story…

Many women carry gum in their purses and other dangerous things and that can be deadly to animals. The dog in her story did live but the weekend of touch and go Vet Treatment in consult with Poison Control was very COSTLY. The Xylitol causes dogs to secrete insulin so their blood sugar drops very quickly. Liver failure usually follows. According to Snopes raisins and grapes can also be deadly to dogs.

TIPS FOR CAMPFIRE SAFETY – so they don’t become a raging inferno that causes a major fire. Story is in the current RV Travel Newsletter.

*** Keep campfires small – completely extinguish them before leaving camp. The best method is to douse fire with water; stir the ashes; douse again. Ensure that all ashes are cold to the touch.
*** Charcoal should be soaked in water after use.
*** Smokers should light up only in areas cleared of all flammable debris. Cigarette butts should never be thrown from vehicle windows.

In my seminar at the Explorer RV Club Rally last weekend, I relayed the value of keeping a tub of either DAMP RID (American) or NO DAMP (Cdn) crystals in the kitchen and in the bathroom to combat excess moisture, but I also stated that not all stores carry them, especially in Cda, however most dealers do. On Monday, Joanne sent me an email telling me she bought Damp Rid in a Cdn Tire store. Thanks for the heads-up. By the way DRI-Z-AIR also works and it comes in a fancy but more costly container.

John and I spilled the one in our bathroom twice recently and cleaning up the oily residue becomes a real chore. The fancy container would have prevented this accident – however today I found a more stable smaller container in the Dollar Store – called DAMP-TRAP. It is not easily refillable but at a $1. each – throwing it out would not be a huge disaster.

Bill sent a story that ATM THEFTS were on the increase in the California Bay Area at 7-11 Stores. This can happen everywhere so Shoppers BE AWARE. Apparently the manufacturers had not properly encrypted the data. Security experts advise people to change their PIN often and shop with companies they know. It may be more advisable to use ATM’s housed in banks – OR better yet, we always take CASHBACK from stores such as Wal*Mart etc. John and I have not used an ATM for the past 7-years. Bill shared that Sacramento CA and Olympia WA have joined the NO CELL PHONE USE areas. Fines are heavy – other areas are joining the same-band wagon. If using a cell phone while driving is important to you, it may be wise to set up a hands free system.

Angie’s email warned of a ‘NEW Big Virus’ that is coming in the form of an email that asks you to OPEN A POSTCARD (MAYBE AN E-CARD TOO). The sender name is a generic description such as from a ‘family member’ or ‘friend’ etc. This virus in some form or other has been around for a while and according to Snopes.com it is real and serious – but apparently it is not the worst Virus ever release and it will not burn-up your hard-drive as the email states. So yes we all must be careful what we open. Read the full story HERE.

Suggestions – if you receive an e-card email, go to the associated website to enter the code number into the space to pick up your card – if it does not go through then you know it is bogus. BUT DO NOT CLICK THE LINK in the email to pick up the card.

Another test is to HOOVER OVER the link and look in the TaskBar at the bottom of your computer. If the website URL that comes up is different than the one in the email LINK, you know you have a SPAM email.

At the Rally my seminar covered RV Living Tips. Afterwards, several RVers who are not on the computer shared a few of their tips. Unfortunately the names of who passed on the first two escapes me…

*** Spray CITRUS FLAVOUR LISTERINE on your lawn chair before you sit around the fire apparently the mosquitos will stay away. Theses flying insects are usually worse at dusk. Other forms of Citrus flavour sprays may also work).

***Rub CITRUS HAND CLEANER on hatbands and peaks – even on light colour hats – and when they are washed ALL stains disappear. (Editors NOTE: We use Dawn Dish Soap on John’s hats before they go into the machine.)

Tip from my seminar at the Explorer RV Club Rally near Windsor, Ontario...

*** Rub LEMON JUICE on difficult stains such as green marks from grass BEFORE they are washed will help dissolve the stain.

*** Another seminar tip – SPRAY A LIGHT BULB WITH PERFUME for an instant room freshener.

*** Cathy shared these four – THERAPY FOR TOENAIL FUNGUS: Soak your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic stops the progress of the fungus and leaves your toenails looking healthy again.

*** To prevent the SCREWS IN EYEGLASSES FROM LOOSENING, apply a small drop of Maybelline Crystal Clear Nail Polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them.

*** KILLS FLEAS INSTANTLY... Dawn Dishwashing Liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Good-bye fleas.

*** RAINY DAY CURE FOR DOG ODOR – Next time your dog comes in from the rain, simply wipe down the animal with Bounce or any dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.

*** I received a recent email from JIG-A-WORLD detailing a neat product called ‘JIG-A-LOO’. This product is promoted for hundreds of practical RV uses. It can, for example, protect the rubber seals on your RV from drying and cracking, or spray it on your shoes, boots, garments, tents, backpacks, canopies and RV covers to keep them dry. The list continues – if WD-40 works so will Jig-a-Loo. It is sold in stores such as Wal*Mart etc. Cost in Cda Wal*Mart is only $5.49. HINTS FOR ‘STAYCATIONERS’…
Mark Polk of RVEducation101.com answered my plea for a selection of TIPS RVING STAYCATIONERS should consider – I needed them for my latest story. I share them here for the interest of everyone.

1) Turn the water supply off and relieve water pressure on the system by opening a hot/cold faucet.
2) Empty your fridge and turn it off. If power is disrupted food will easily spoil, causing Bad odors.
3) Secure all personal property - double check all locks and storage compartment doors before leaving.
4) Turn off each LP gas appliances and turn the main supply valve to off.
5) Inform management you will be away and ask them to keep an eye on your unit for you. (Note from Peggi – you may want to leave a key with park management or with a friend.)
6) As far as having electric power available to the unit – you have two choices. If the refrigerator is empty, unplug the unit and turn off all battery disconnects. OR Leave the unit plugged in and use some light timers so various lights turn on each evening. The battery should be okay for a week or so if unit is plugged in, but Mark suggests to always check the water levels in batteries before leaving.
7) Close window blinds or drapes to prevent nosey neighbors from snooping around. (Note from Peggi – Close them to also block the suns harmful rays from fading the interior.)
8) Take all valuables like expensive jewellery and paperwork with you in the event something happens to your unit at the campground.
9) Make sure you have the proper RV insurance to protect the RV while you are away.

As I said earlier, my story is “Continue to use your RV – Become a Staycationer!!!” The tips above will help pave the way for that story.

Cathy shared this info – I have received it several times over a few months. But it is worth passing on. Dialing any of these Area Codes will lead to a costly monthly bill. They are located in distant places and the caller may try to keep you on the phone extensively. When your bill comes in your total could be at several thousands

In brief, the email begins like this…
“We actually received a call last week from the 809 Area Code. A voice on the phone said, Hey, this is Karen. Sorry I missed you – get back to us quickly. I have something important to tell you. Then she repeated a phone number beginning with 809. Thankfully we didn't respond.

Then this week, we (The sender) received a warning e-mail: Subject: DON'T EVER dial area code 809, 284 and 876."

Margaret shared an email reference a simple blood test that supposedly detects difficult to find SIGNS OF OVARIAN CANCER. This long post suggested that even if you no longer have your ovaries, you could still contract one or two forms of Ovarian Cancer.

Diagnosis is apparently confirmed via a simple CA-125 BLOOD TEST, treatment follows with surgery to remove the primary tumor and then chemotherapy. Unfortunately if you receive this email, please do not send it on because according to Snopes.com, it’s a FALSE report. Read the entire story Here…

My good friend and partner, Diane Batten died of a RARE FORM OF CANCER 4-years ago. Numerous more of her childhood friends from their neighbourhood, including her younger sister also contracted other rare forms of many different maladies. As kids they all played in the local creek behind the Westinghouse Canada Plant. This company used these chemicals and randomly disposed of the PCB’s they used with few guidelines. Diane’s sister, Joanne and her mother have joined a group to make Westinghouse responsible for their actions.
