Hi All: In a way, this relaxing week has been a double edge sword. It feels good to stop and unwind a bit – but on the other hand we miss the wonder of finding a new adventure around each bend. Oh well, we’ll be on our way again on the 6th to Traverse Bay RV Resort – www.traversebayrv.com Traverse City, Michigan to join John’s side of the family for a reunion type gathering. They have rented a huge cottage for a week – John and I will be nearby in a posh campground. With Katie, it is better we stay in the MH. That should be a good week to touch base with John’s side of the family.

OUR WEEK IN REVIEW

What an amazing, awesome, picturesque, event filled trip we just finished. It is definitely up their in our top 10 adventures. Our Guardian Angels and the Good Lord were working overtime because the coach performed beautiful for the entire 6000-mile trip. Last Sunday afternoon we crossed the border at Sault Ste Marie, Michigan to take a short cut to London - the Diary went out from Sault. Michigan. Our return trip to Sarnia and then on to London was uneventful – more of a ‘go-gettum’ type drive than we had experienced during the past few weeks. We had another smooth border crossing into Canada, but that agent too scanned our passports – seems to be almost a routine when us RVers are crossing the border these days. Guess it helped that we had nothing on board that was purchased in the USA. Because we prefer to arrive at our park early in the day, we spent Monday night at the London Flying J – topped up with propane before enjoying a late night Pizza dinner. A quiet sleep followed. Our tasty breakfast before we set out the next morning was a perfect end to this fantastic journey. Cool

As soon as we settled into our campground near London, we left to pick up 6-weeks of mail and restock the fridge etc. Just routine ‘stuff’ that is a necessity after being away. Of course finding time to lunch at Kelsey’s for a decadent ½-chicken pizza/Caesar salad for me – a creative tasty mandarin salad for John provided a comfy welcome home. Simple distractions like this helped us to settle down after our awesome western adventure. Cool

WINDING DOWN

We have stayed close to home this week, while I took time to post my pictures, clean up my computer files; add a few more ‘RVing Canada’ Blogs on www.rvtravel.com and eliminate several hundred email that have gathered in my inbox during times I could not deal with them. So this week’s blurb is shorter than normal to make up for all the long ones I sent the past 6 weeks. See I can be brief when I want to. Cool

FINAL THOUGHTS ALSO INCLUDES A TIP

RV Parks everywhere are so busy mid summer. I strongly recommend that RVERS MAKE RESERVATIONS BEFORE THEY START OUT ON A TRIP. Both John and I spent an extensive search for a mid August weekend extension to the family visit in Traverse City. We had planned to be in the USA for a week and our park near the family gathering was only booked for 4-days. Well, you will not believe this - we found what looks like a colossal GEM halfway between Traverse City and Sarnia. They are even offering a very low special price for us Canadians. With our dollar being so strong these days, none of us RVers expect to be rewarded with special pricing. Next week’s Diary will be sent from that park and I’ll relay full details then. As my sister Nancy says, “Don’t drive any faster than your Guardian Angel can fly”. We need those Guardian Angels to enjoy our journeys remain safe. Travel safe P&J Cool Cool Cool

TIPS/PROMOS ARE TOGETHER AGAIN THIS WEEK

Last week I relayed the value of NOT WAITING to become an RVer. If Fulltiming is a few years away many ‘experts’ recommend that ‘RV Wannabees’ should buy an affordable used unit (those without slides cost less) JUST TO GET OUT AND ENJOY THIS GREAT LIFESTYLE until your ‘D’ day arrives. It is such a wonderful way to meet other RVers and learn the facts as each local getaway unfolds. There is no better way to gain knowledge of what is what when the F/T world does finally roll around. During last weeks post I also stress that if you are new to RVing and you plan to buy a ‘pre-loved???’ unit, you should not put down your money until you have read the following ebook by Les Doll.

Les’s guide ‘WHAT EVERYBODY SHOULD KNOWABOUT BUYING A USED RV’ simply overflows with what to look for. This working RV Tech knows how to spot potential pit-falls such as water leaks, delamination of the coach skin, hidden damage, electrical problems and so much more. His valuable ebook will save you from making a very bad purchase. All this for only $27.00 – Instant Download to your computer. Go to http://rvliving.pac113.hop.clickbank.net for details.

I repeated this info for another reason. Good friends Norm and Linda Payne sent out a notice that their already jam-packed website had been updated. Their interesting travels of the Great River Road covers a 5-part series. However I am also mentioning www.seeya-downtheroad.com for another reason. One of Norm’s informative short stories at www.seeya-downtheroad.com/ShortStories/DoItNow.html - entitled ‘Do it now!!!’ is a very sad ‘must-read’. It reinforces the reasons why waiting to follow your dreams may not be the best choice for anyone. I could also add personal story hardships that future F/Ters faced that waited to long but for now this story says it all.

MEMBERSHIP PARKS ADD A TOUCH OF FREEDOM TO YOUR TRAVELS.

As gas/fuel and camping cost rise, we RVers who move around have to find ways to stretch our dollars. One option is to buy into Membership Parks. These parks are not located at every location, but with a little planning, many nights can be at these low-cost utopias. Although some are better than others on our trip west we stayed at several of the most beautiful posh parks in the Membership systems.

RVers can buy into these systems for many thousand or they can purchase a resale membership like we did for a few hundred. Send me an email and I’ll be happy to forward detailed info on our inexpensive package. It covers COAST TO COAST (C2C) AND RESORTS PARK INTERNATIONAL (RPI) PLUS. (The ‘Plus’ includes a complimentary membership to RPI’s 50% Discount Camping Club called ‘Enjoy America’). These are two of the most popular membership park systems that offer deep overnight discounts – there are others! To use C2C and RPI, members also pay a small annual fee to each club. But then camping fees are only $8.00 US$ p/n ($10-$11.00 Cdn) – members can stay a week, twice p/yr at each park.

John and I bought into Shiloh RV Park, Monroe, LA a year ago. Park price was low with first year dues at $69.00 – $99.00 in future years. Our total first year of BASIC-only membership was $514.00. However we can also walk away from this plan at any time for a small fee – no long-term contracts. SEND ME AN EMAIL FOR MORE DETAILS.

Issue 29 – NEW BEST FRIENDS

Diary published weekly since 2001
_______________________________________________

Hi All: This has been another super week en route to Ontario. The days have been long with numerous miles of blacktop between stops, but touching base with interesting ‘Newest Best Friends’ en route has added a pleasant touch of class. This has been one of our most memorable trips to and from the west. We also found several unique campgrounds – some better than others, but each added to our stopovers. It still amazes me that even after such a long time on the move, we continue to find spots we have never visited before. Canada is definitely a vast country no matter how you look at it. Cool

We have enjoyed driving days in fantastic weather, but by all reports, bad stuff moved into many places right after we left. I began this Diary while driving through Saskatchewan on Friday and worked on it a bit in our isolated park east of Winnipeg. I added more info last night in Nipigon and I expect to send it tonight from our RV park just across the border into Michigan. Cool

ONE MORE GREAT WEEK

Last Monday, our enjoyable western trip continued at the GREAT CANADIAN BARN DANCE CAMPGROUND southwest of Lethbridge, Alberta (www.greatcanadianbarndance.com) with Pat and Dianna. This young Fulltiming twosome has purchased a ‘site’ overlooking a peaceful lake at this park. They eventually plan to build a house that includes space for their MH – much like we snowbirds see in the southern states. Maybe by our next jaunt west in a few years, we can visit them in their new digs. Their park is heavy into musical ‘family-style’ entertaining dinner/music theatre extravaganzas from Wednesday to Saturday. Couldn’t fit in a show this trip, but for sure our next visit will overlap a weekend. Cool

Monday night all four of us enjoyed a typical Mexican Dinner on the screened patio of TWIN BUTTE COUNTRY GENERAL STORE & RESTAURANT. Food was tasty and company excellent. Gift Shop and Rustic camping is also available at this venue. Thanks goes to the two Emma’s, and to Jerry for our tasty meal, and to Pat and Dianna for the warm camaraderie. We had a great visit guys.

MUSEUM OF MINIATURES

While at the Great Canadian Barn dance Campground we visited the outstanding MUSEUM OF MINIATURES in nearby Cardston, Alberta. 1-403-653-1142. www.geocities.com/miniaturesmsm Roy and Carol Wittman are owners/creators of the most impressive historic ‘Old West’ miniature displays we have seen anywhere. Roy is a retired BC Ferryboat captain of 35-years but his main love is to create things. Cool

He personified his ‘Old West’ with 1/12” scale miniatures of covered wagons on the move, Indian villages, a functioning fort, a herd of buffalo, wild animals, logging, rodeo, marine exhibits plus an active western town that includes stables, school, church, general store, blacksmith shop and hotel – personified with numerous figurines; Indian carvings and paintings. His collection also includes 150 authentic scale model cars and trucks that enhance their displays. His creation is ongoing so frequent visits will always be rewarding. Cool

Six years before retirement Roy created and sold. 1/12"-scale, ‘Wells Fargo stages’ and ‘’Prairie Schooner wagons’ to customers as far away as South Africa. He slowly added more pieces to the mix such as mixture of buildings with a shake roof on each of them – (25,000-miniature shakes applied by hand) and 700-planks make up the boardwalk that joins the buildings. The ‘tufts’ of grass in several scenes are made from human hair and the oat fields consist of 12,000 plants. He formed his garden vegetables from ‘Fima’ (a pliable material that is shaped, baked in an oven and painted). Before long his hobby was consuming his life. ‘Westward Ho’ Museum of Miniatures opened in May 2001. Cool

The 'Old West' exhibits surround the perimeter while the 'centre showcase' features animal figurines, Indian heads, a circus scene, a Christmas house, a flower shop, bakery – the list goes on. This museum is a ‘must see’ to really appreciate it. If you are ever near Cardston, Alberta, make a point to stop by. Cool

CAMPGROUND GEMS ALONG THE WAY

On a very HOT Tuesday en route to Swift Current – we found the western Saskatchewan terrain included more hills than we remembered – so the coach, Katie, John and I were feeling the effects of our 35oC driving day. When we saw a sign 10 KM west of Maple Creek promoting the EAGLE VALLEY PARKWAY CAMPGROUND, (1-306-662-2788) we decided to turn in. What a neat place – the office and décor is now highlighted with a Tahitian theme. Thatched straw style umbrellas over the picnic tables in the open roof, yet enclosed, patio/lounge add a tropical sense to everything – an inviting Hydrotherapy Spa completed that picture. WiFi in the office area, a store/mini cafe, continental breakfast at the Tiki Coffee Bar, and a swimming pond/beach area on the lower level were definite added pluses. Cool

The biggest surprise was their unique campsite design. All sites were pull-thrus, but with a big difference. On each side of a wide road, RV’s pulled into spacious indentations – much as if we were parallel parked. Site picnic table/patios faced a lush wide manicured treed area. Those travelling the TCH (Trans Canada Highway) near Swift Current should consider stopping for a night. Good Sam full-service rates were just under $25.00.

-----------------------------------------------------

Wednesday and Thursday we stopped at another Gem – BUFFALO LOOKOUT.RV CAMPGROUND in Regina - 1-306-525-1448 www.buffalolookoutrvcampground.com The new owners/management have transformed the place big time. Coffee and goodies every morning, big rig sites, modern laundry and large rec hall, plus free WiFi in the office area. All this is only a hop; skip and a jump from Regina plus Passport America discounts are available for drive-up customers. We have done Regina’s tourist thing on previous visits, but we scheduled a two-day stop just to relax. Cool

One special reason for stopping in Regina was to meet and touch base with Trent and Teresa, long time readers of P&J’s Diary. This Duo is counting the days (actually less than 5-years) till they can hit the road. Lunch at Houston Pizza – Regina’s finest – gave us a perfect opportunity to share experiences. These two are at the same age as we were 23-years ago when we touched base with our new-found seasonal RV friends. We learned so much from those Florida neighbours as Trent and Teresa say they have learned from us by following our experiences. Guess what goes around comes around. Our food was decadent but it was our conversation that was most enjoyable – thanks guys for lunch and the touch base visit. Stay focused – time will fly by till you too can be following your dream. Cool

WEEKEND STOPS ALONG THE WAY

Friday evening we relaxed in the very pretty ROCK GARDEN RV PARK (204-0422-5441) at Richer, Manitoba – we had a picturesque level pull-through site surrounded by dense bush – a great solution to Manitoba’s heat wave. Unfortunately the cell only worked for a minute or two at a time – niether the TV or Internet Dish logged onto even a hint of service. However it felt good to relax and pick up a book for a change. Cool

Saturday night we arrived at STILLWATER TENT AND TRAILER PARK in Nipigon, Ontario – 1-807 877 3701. The days drive was very pretty but it is an extremely loooong way from Winnipeg to Nipigon, Ontario. We have stayed at this full service park many times over the years although it is a 10-hour drive from Winnipeg (plus we lost an hour when we entered the Eastern time zone) – there is very little in between. We have had NO cell service since Manitoba – not sure if Verizon can not ‘piggy-back’ onto local cell carriers or what the reason is, but our phone has stated ‘No Service’ for two days. Cool

Although the entire route from Manitoba has been very scenic, I have really had enough of mile after mile of trees, lakes and gentle curving highway. Today’s (Sunday) drive on highway 17 from Nipigon has been exceptionally curvy with some intense climbs. It has been about 8-years since we took this picturesque route and we forgot how much the road snaked and how many hills it actually has. Over the years we have done the tourist things along the way and on this leg of this journey from A-B. Again - this was a pretty drive, but oh so long & boring. Cool

We are staying in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan for the night at the very laidback and inexpensive BP VILLAGE CAMPGROUND (exit 392 on Hwy 75. 1-906-632-1952 - $20.00 E&W) This is a short-cut route to London. FYI - Customs confiscated a 1.5lb ground beef we had in the freezer for Katie. On a positive note, I am happy to relay that much of the Trans-Canada highway in Saskatchewan and Manitoba plus some portions of Ontario is now four-lanes – more is on the way. Although ongoing construction was prevalent in a few places, for the most part, including today’s route to Michigan, the majority of the roads we travelled were in good shape – except 50 km on either side of Thunder Bay. Our car, hitch and motorhome have NEVER been this DIRTY. Cool
______________________________________________

FINAL WORDS.

By Monday or Tuesday we expect to be back at GOLDEN POND in London. This has been an outstanding trip – but it has also been extremely tiring. At least now we are on a wind down – we plan to stay put for a couple of weeks before we head to Michigan for a Family Reunion on John’s side of the family. Hope each of you are enjoying your summer as much as we are enjoying ours. Have fun wherever your journey takes you, but be sure to leave time to relax along the way. Travel safe. P&J Cool Cool Cool

TIP & PROMOS COMBINED THIS WEEK

WHAT TYPE OF RV IS BEST?

One big Q with no correct answer – Trent and Teresa (and numerous others) are unsure of what unit they should buy to go fulltime - a fifth or a motorhome (or even a towable). There is no proper answer because this is such a personal question. First off decide where your travels will take you? Most fifths offer expansive living space but motorhomes are a bit easier to put into travel mode. Fifths have more inside storage areas and MH have more outside compartments. When travelling in a motorhome you do not have to go outside the driving vehicle to make lunch or use the potty (passengers that is). Another difference – when it comes to acquiring a fifth and truck, purchase or upgrades can occur during different time periods, this helps to spread cash outlay.

One suggestion to future RVers (or soon to be fulltimers) is to rent a unit OR you could buy an older RV during your waiting period. Many dealers have a number of very serviceable reliable older units for sale – maybe without slides etc. These are good transitional RV’s until your ‘D’ day – (your Fulltime Departure Date). Maybe then you will know what you want in your special ‘Dream Machine’ home on wheels.

Les Doll’s e-book guide ‘WHAT EVERYBODY SHOULD KNOWABOUT BUYING A USED RV’ overflows with what to look for. Les is a working RV Tech, so he knows how to spot potential pit-falls such as water leaks, hidden damage, electrical problems and more. If you plan on buying a used RV please purchase this valuable ebook. It may save you from making a very bad purchase. All this for only $27.00 - instant download. Go to http://rvliving.pac113.hop.clickbank.net for details.

MY SUPER VALUABLE INTERNET SATELLITE DISH

Many of the parks we stayed at offered WiFi from No-Cost to $5.00 per day – BUT that usually meant RVers had to go to the office to access the ‘Hotspot’. When our cell phone is ‘in service’ in the campground – I can sometimes connect to the Internet using it. That is if I have enough minutes.

HOWEVERif, being on-line 24/7 without searching far and wide for WiFi ‘Hotspots’ is important to you, why not add a Dish to your ‘RV toy chest’? They take only minutes to set up and they’re such a joy to use. Cost is $1495.00 & $69.00 p/mo. (USA/Cdn customers). Big plus with my supplier - there’s no time limit on tech support. Why not give Armand and his staff a call at 1-705-878-9252. Say Peggi sent you. Read the entire story about my wonderful Dish at www.rvliving.net/EarlyObserationsDirecWay.htm

Issue 28, MY SEMINAR SCHEDULE IS OVER FOR NOW

Diary published weekly since 2001

NOTE: I ran out of time to post more impressive pictures to my Picasa Albums under ‘Trip West’. They are on my agenda this week. Images of our memorable drive from Radium to Calgary through the Kooteney National Park PLUS the pictures of the simply awesome Grandstand Show and Rodeo at the Calgary Stampede and Explorer RV Club Rally are coming – I thank you for your patience. (BE SURE TO VIEW THEM AS A SLIDESHOW) at http://picasaweb.google.com/rv.lifetstyle.consultants

_______________________________________________

Hi All: I should be on time for the next few weeks till we take off again over a weekend. We have about another 9 days before we get back to Ontario – 2-days with friends in Great Canadian Barn Dance SW of Lethbridge (we are there now) and one in Swift current, 2 nights in Regina and then 3 en route to Sault St Marie and back to London through Michigan. We are on the way home but we prefer to saunter along.

_______________________________________

THIS HAS BEEN A GREAT WEEK.

We left Calgary for Lethbridge last Monday. We have previously driven through Lethbridge, but never stopped for a visit. This progressive city is so squeaky clean and the entire shopping area of all the big box stores looks like the city was a new entity. Lethbridge, like most communities are rapidly moving forward but they are doing it with a lot of planning. It was such a neat place to visit – one more first for us. Another high point - we touched base with Lynne and Fred who live in Lethbridge. Lynne Benjamin just picked up her new publication call Jacob’s Tails – a first publication for her. When I have a chance to read my copy I will enlarge on it.

The BRIDGEVIEW HOLIDAY TRAILS RESORT in Lethbridge is another membership park we can stay at for bargain prices, but it too is also one more Gem. Huge unique unusual shaped hills that appear as though they popped out of the ground, plus an extremely high railroad bridge provided interesting vistas through our front window. Parking pads were crushed red gravel and the surrounding site was bright stone pebbles instead of grass. Very pretty plus they always looked good. Great connections, good activity schedules and many amenities added to a stopover, plus the park offers WiFi for $3.00 per day – however my Dish worked well so I didn’t try their WiFi. All this was a mere $11.00 per night – as an RPI or Coast-to-Coast member we do enjoy special savings. Anyone who wants details on how to buy into a park for a few hundred $$$$’s please send me an email. For that price you only get the basics but you can spend upwards of $6-$10,000 for the full package if that more completely suits your style. We have stayed enough nights at membership parks to make our reduced purchase very worthwhile for us.

NIKKA YUKO JAPENESE GARDENS

This week we visited the NIKKA YUKO JAPANESE FRIENDSHIP GARDEN www.nikkayuko.com in Lethbridge, Alberta. What a peaceful relaxing place. It is not a floral garden, instead it is a landscape design using rocks, water and aesthetically pruned trees and plants to satisfy all your senses from balance, to unity, to scale, to harmony, to sight and sounds. There are five basic areas: a dry garden; mountain and waterfall; stream, island and moon bridges; ponds lakes and ocean; plus a prairie garden. The history of this type of garden began in the 16th century; it was designed to promote meditations and reflection. The peace and tranquility within the garden is overwhelming. A meandering path encourages visitors to take a leisurely stroll from one presentation to another.

We started our journey at the Wishing Well. Originally it provided water for the ‘tea ceremony’ in the Cultural Centre Pavilion – the focal point of the garden. In true Japanese fashion to visit this historic centre, you have to take your shoes off. The building is patterned in 16th century fashion – there are minimal furnishings in the centre so as not to distract you from the relaxing ambiance. On your journey be sure to ring the giant friendship bell and enjoy the aesthetic Pagoda – observe its five tiers that represent earth, fire, water, wind and sky.

During the Second World War Japanese Canadians were uprooted from their homes on the British Columbia coast to southern Alberta. This moved changed the face of Lethbridge forever and the garden stands as a testament to the perseverance of these men and women.

The garden is celebrating its 39th year – it opened to commemorate Canada’s centennial. The entrance is via a long path to provide visitors time to transform from their busy lives to one of reflection, relaxation and tranquility. The variety of hardy and ornamental plants in this lush utopia was chosen to withstand Alberta’s harsh winters. A partial quote from their brochure says it all. “Art is contemplation; it is the pleasure of the mind” The Nikka Yuko Garden definitely fits this description.

Sara, dressed in her traditional ‘yukata’, escorted us to the gate where she took time to share the wonders of each area of the garden sights and sounds and how each appeals to the senses. Hearing the waterfall before you could see it creates a relaxing feeling that draws you to the source. All in all the ambiance provided an extremely relaxing visit to say the least.

BUCARS U

Friday we checked into BUCAR’S RV www.bucarsrv.com to present my seminars on Saturday - I had a several handouts to copy. First one, my comprehensive ‘Canada Hotspots’, was at 10 AM, followed by a BBQ at noon and a ‘Packing’ seminar at 1 PM. I am happy to say that both presentations were well attended by numerous attentive new and seasoned RVers. It was a fun time. Bucar’s RV in Calgary hold their ‘University’ one day each month. If you live in the Calgary area take a look at what they have to offer. The seminars are Free so why not give them a call. I send a big thanks to the few loyal Diary readers who also attended. It was great to touch base with each of you. Great talking with you Roy and thanks for joining us Wanda – even if you’re not RVing as yet.

RV FRIENDS MAKE THE WORLD GO ROUND

Dianna and Pat, fulltiming friends that we met through this Diary, own a lot at the Great Cdn Barn Dance CG near Pincher Creek and Cardston, Alberta. Dianna and Pat suggested we visit their park and join them for a BBQ – what a feast guys. The food, ambiance and camaraderie was wonderful. While we were at their place two attendees, George and Val, from the Calgary rally, stopped by. So all in all it was a perfect way to wind down from my hectic month of planning etc. They are leaving tomorrow but when they recognized our unit they had to stop by (great to see you again guys). Dianna and Pat, you two are a superior host and hostess. Thanks from the bottom of our hearts for a fun relaxing (I needed that) very pleasant evening.

FINAL WORDS.

On Tuesday we expect to begin our trek back to Ontario. This has been an outstanding trip but it has also been extremely tiring. At least now we are on a wind down – hopefully we can stay put for a couple of weeks in London before we are on the go again. Hope each of you are enjoying your summer as much as we are enjoying ours. Have fun wherever your journey takes you, but be sure to leave time for some relaxation along the way. Travel safe. P&J

ERS (EMERGENCY ROAD SERVICE)

I continue to receive many email about what ERS is the best. I recommend you join one that provides …
1) Unlimited number of calls per year
2) Two tow trucks if required. – you don’t want to leave your towable on the road while your tow vehicle is removed for repair.
3) Unlimited distance to the most appropriate repair facility.
4) Payment for service should only be a signature – no extra fees should be required.

Auto clubs added ERS systems to their benefits when there were few RV designed ones available, but these days numerous services are accessible for RVers. In most cases, RV ERS memberships includes benefits fcover two people plus all those listed above – cost run between $79-$99 US$ per year. Some offer 24/7 tech support and others reimburse a nominal fee for breakdowns in Mexico. Shop around – with Goodsam.com, FMCA.com (motorhomes only), Escapees.com, Explorer-rvclub.com, Campingworld.com plus several others. Most work the same way – a toll free call goes into a California Call Centre and from there a service facility is contacted in the province/state and community you are in. You receive a return call stating help is on the way and how long it should take to arrive.

HOW I INADVERTANTLY BLOCKED ACCESS TO MY DISH

Last October while in the Panhandle a notice popped up on my computer asking if I wanted to allow or disallow access to what I thought was park WiFi. I don’t know why but I said ‘Disallow’. However it was not the park system it was access to my own Dish that I blocked. I was horrified that I had been so ‘stupid’ (I usually never block anything) but after that I could only connect to my system by attaching a blue LAN cord from my computer to the ‘router’. In a word I was no longer wireless to my own system. The Techs from my Dish supplier at 31 Communications and many other tech savvy RV friends spent hours trying to solve the problem; but until last week I was still attached to my ‘blue umbilical cord’ that was strung around the room under rugs. I was operational but it was not the best situation.

It is the little things that seem to be out to get us especially with technology. At the rally in Calgary I shared my system security access number to my Dish with a friend. Just on a whim I decided to re-insert that number into my system and Voila, immediately I am once again operating wirelessly. The only reason I am sharing this info is if I was foolish enough to do something like this – others will be too. I continue to love my Dish but now my love affair is even more intense because I am now once again operating wirelessly on my own system.

If being on-line 24/7 without searching far and wide for WiFi ‘hotspots’ is important to you, why not add a Dish to your RV toy chest? They take only minutes to set up and they’re such a joy to use. Price is $1495.00 and monthly rates begin at $69.00 (USA/Cdn customers). Read the entire story about my wonderful Dish www.rvliving.net/EarlyObserationsDirecWay.htm

PROMOS THIS WEEK

MEMBERSHIP PARKS ADD A TOUCH OF FREEDOM TO YOUR TRAVELS.

On much of this trip we have stayed at beautiful posh Membership Parks. RVers can buy into these systems for many thousand or they can purchase a resale membership like we did for a few hundred. I will be happy to send anyone info on our inexpensive package that covers COAST TO COAST (C2C) AND RESORTS PARK INTERNATIONAL (RPI) PLUS. BUT then camping fees are only $8.00 US$ p/n ($10-$11.00 Cdn) – stay up to a week, twice p/yr at each park.

John and I bought into Shiloh RV Park, Monroe, LA a year ago. Park price was low with first year dues at $69.00 – $99.00 in future years. However we can walk away from this plan at any time for a small fee – no long term contracts. SEND ME AN EMAIL FOR MORE DETAILS.

Issue 27, ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL RALLY IS OVER

Diary published weekly since 2001

NOTE: I continue to periodically post more impressive pictures to my Picasa Albums under ‘Trip West’ Watch for images of our memorable drive from Radium to Calgary through the Kooteney National Park PLUS the pictures of the simply awesome Grandstand Show and Rodeo at the Calgary Stampede and Explorer RV Club Rally. They will be up sometime this week, please check back often. (BE SURE TO VIEW THEM AS A SLIDESHOW) at http://picasaweb.google.com/rv.lifetstyle.consultants

Hi All: Well I am late again this week but we have had so much fun playing at another rally that I just did not have time to send this weeks blurb on Saturday as planned – due to our schedule I expect next week’s Diary may not go out till Monday/Tuesday again.

OUR WEEK IN REVIEW

Our Canada Day began with a pancake breakfast at the impressive RADIUM VALLEY VACATION RESORT in Radium Hot Springs. Although this one of a kind park is a membership park, non-members are welcome. It is without a doubt one of the best campgrounds we have ever stayed at. Call for info 1-250-347-9715 or go to www.radiumvalleyvacationresort.com/rv.htm See last weeks Diary for park details – take a look at the pictures in my Picasa Albums. This park is also a timeshare establishment.

This years Canada Day activities included a visit to the amazing huge Hot Springs Mineral Pools (there are two large pools – one warmer than the other). We also took a drive through more outstanding local scenery. Nearby Invermere hosted an interesting parade to highlight this momentous day.

Tuesday we headed for Calgary through the spectacular Kooteney National Park. A few deer along the highway (one stopped in the middle of the road to stare at us approaching) was all we saw, but no elk or other critters were roaming during our drive, but the vistas were awesome. Those who simply drive through the park without stops to visit sites along the way do not have to pay the park entrance fee – however a visit to the Hot Spas located inside the park is free access. This route is approximately 150 miles to Calgary.

NOTE: Just for info there is a very high climb when leaving Radium Hot Springs, but the rest of the journey is a gentle picturesque mountain drive – the scenery is second to none.

CALGARY STAMPEDE – EXPLORER RV CLUB RALLY.

We arrived at SYMONS VALLEY RANCH AND RV PARK in Calgary www.symonsvalleyranch.com two days early for The Explorer RV Club 11th Anniversary Rally (this club is Canada’s answer to Good Sam) www.explorer-rvclub.com. John and I checked into the park on Tuesday so we could spend time with Wanda – a good friend and a Toronto workmate of mine – she calls Calgary home, plus I had to make numerous photocopies etc. for my seminar on the Saturday – there was not much chance to complete the copy task in the vacation spot of Radium Hot Springs.

The land surrounding Symons Valley Ranch RV Park complex is slowly being encroached with numerous housing communities. We were in this area 9-years ago when it was in the country – but not any more. This park includes a typical western style bar/grill/restaurant/patio plus several halls that cater for weddings and many special events – some of their Stampede functions even included a mini rodeo.

Besides having a superior time for club members to celebrate with old friends and meeting many more new ones. Bill and Ted brought their guitars along with their voices – plus several others participated to lead us in singsongs. So our gang was entertained at IMPROMPTU MUSICAL GATHERINGS before, after and during the rally.

ARE YOU TOUGH ENOUGH TO WEAR PINK?

THE FIRST 30-HOURS OF THE STAMPEDE was devoted to a major fundraiser for Breast Cancer. Thanks to Wrangler shirts, numerous men and oodles of the women wore pink shirts, hats and other adornments – many participants were friends and family associated with breast cancer survivors. Volunteers sold bandanas and a variety of ‘pink coloured’ souvenirs throughout the first day of the Stampede. The ‘Pink Theme’ was also an obvious addition to the parade, the opening ceremonies, the rodeo, the chuck wagon races, the entertaining groups throughout the stampede and so much more. It seemed that everyone got into the act. The ‘ARE YOU TOUGH ENOUGH TO WEAR PINK CAMPAIGN?” began in 2005 with a couple of hundred participants and this year the Stampede raised well over a ½ million towards the cause. Watch for even bigger and better things in the future

CALGARY STAMPEDE

Some rally attendees took an early bus down to see the parade but most of us left at noon in time to enjoy an afternoon at the incredible full event Rodeo and at 8 PM, we had tickets to watch the spirited CHUCK WAGON RACES – what a rush !!! This event was followed with a most spectacular stage show presented by several hundred ‘YOUNG CANADIANS’. Three categories of performers begin at age 6-8 years old. Over the years they graduate from Juniors, to Apprentices, to Seniors during this progressive annual event. The ‘Young Canadians’ celebrated their 39th year of participation at the Stampede – it reinforces a commitment to youth and the community.

The entire cast made the performance look so easy – but it takes the cast months of endless practice to ‘get it right’. What an amazing accomplishment – words cannot explain the energy, choreography, music, dancing, singing, costumes and much more – in a word it was simply awesome. Theme of the 2007 extravaganza – “Under the Cowboy Skies - The Spirit of 1912”. It celebrated the magic, heart and soul of the Calgary Stampede and of the west. Taking in the Grandstand show should be an absolute must for every visitor.

RALLY EVENTS CONTINUED OVER THE WEEKEND

We didn’t arrive back at the park till 1:AM, so Saturday morning was free for a late sleep-in. Three-seminars Sat afternoon helped to educate everyone. Doug presented a most informative presentation on ‘BATTERIES/SOLAR PANELS’ – www.gpelectric.com, Dan from www.explore-canadacaravans.com/ moderated a discussion reference ‘GAS VS DIESEL’ and I outlined a seminar covering ‘EXTENDED TRAVEL’ – attendees at my seminar received an extensive 7-page handout.

MEALS were all catered by the park staff – Friday was chicken and ribs, Saturday we enjoyed a delicious prime rib feast and Sunday’s breakfast included everything from pancakes to eggs, hash browns, bacon, ham, sausage and more. We did eat well. Saturday night a DJ kept all of us ‘cowboys and cowgirls’ (many in western dress) busy on the dance floor. Sunday afternoon rousing games of BEAN BAG BASEBALL AND 50-FOOT PUTT added a perfect finale to the mix. Many door prizes satisfied the sense of chance plus.

Bill and Sue donated an elaborate STAINGLASS COWBOY ON A HORSE and Peggy donated one of her cute HOMEMADE TEDDY BEARS and Roberta donated a MEMORY QUILT – tickets were sold on each as cancer fundraisers. The Club collected almost $800.00 at this rally to help fight cancer. All in all, this was a most enjoyable gathering – too bad participant numbers had to be limited to only 72 units – that was the total of RV sites Marcia (Club Director) could reserve. Thanks Joe and Barb (club owners) and Marcia and Lee for another super rally.

Would love to touch base with each of you. Must go for this week. Thanks for your patience. Stay away from the road gaiters and travel safe. Till later P&J

TIPS AND PROMOS ARE COMBINED THIS WEEK

I received four-exceptionally informative newsletters this week. So I am providing the links so you can read them for yourself. Why not sign up for your copy while on the site.

RVEDUCTION101.COM – Mark and Dawn Polk jam so much info into their monthly newsletter that I hope you will read it for yourself. Go to http://rveducation101.com/newsletter/july-2007.htm?siteID=0

QUOTE: A few very informative website highlights from their July newsletter
The following websites ‘geocode’ most of their info, so RVers can find the locations of these services by GPS coordinates:
www.roadcamping.com/ offers RVers the opportunity to search for 7000+ campgrounds by highway route, place name, county, or a visual map.
www.roadlibrary.com/ helps RVers search for public libraries that are the most common source for free internet access.
www.roadchamber.com/ was created to allow RVers to access local Chamber of Commerce. Experienced RVers know that the Chamber is often the best source for local tourism information.
www.roadmuseums.com/ has 10,000+ museums to search for by highway route.
www.road-police.com/ allows RVers to search for law enforcement locations by highway route.

In GOOD SAMS MONTHLY NOTICE I was reminded that GS offers out of country TRAVEL INSURANCE for Canadian members. Log onto www.goodsamclub.com and click on “member benefits”, then “insurance”.

Good Sam offer a free 2-day out of country medical insurance for all Canadian members for every time members cross the order. They also offer a similar plan for Americans going north. Check out the details on their website. NO ONE SHOULD VISIT ANOTHER COUNTRY WITHOUT EXTENDED MEDICAL COVERAGE. This gives you a good place to start. These are multi-trip policies so all you have to do is phone 1-888-237-1177 to activate your coverage. Top-ups are available.

One point – many websites sell GS memberships but we bought ours from Camping World a year ago and the cost was only $12.00 plus we received a $10.00 coupon to use in the store.

Canadians can also access CHEAP PHONE CALLS that can be added to your landline phone bill. It is called LOONIE PHONE. There is NO membership or sign-up required but it does NOT work with cell phones. You can make 100 minutes of calls to the USA and Canada for a Loonie ($1.00 coin) using this program. Full details at http://www.looneycall.ca/

Just dial 10-15-565 before calling long distance. To contact the customer service representatives dial 416 279-1368, 1-800 785-5869 or 10-15-565-0 or by email at info@looneycall.ca for other alternatives. This is a Cdn company and the $1.00 per minute appears on your home phone invoice. This program will NOT work with a cell phone. You will have to ask if it can be added to a USA landline or is it only Cdns that benefit from this service.
