PROMOS & TIPS COMBINED THIS WEEK

PROMOS & TIPS Issue 17

FIRE SAFETY TIP from Mac McCoy in the RV Travel.com newsletter. RVers, who have a quick-disconnect fitting on your water hookup, can unhook it instantly to fight a fire. If a nearby coach is burning and you cannot move your coach but can safely stay close enough to keep it hosed down, you may be able to save it. PEGGI’S NOTE: A quick Disconnect used for any water hose simplifies connecting the water hose to your rig without pliers. “Click And Your Connected!”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

OUR PERSONAL FIRE TIP:

About three times a week a story relaying RV Fires arrives by email as part of Google RV alerts (These email include any daily news stories in the USA/Canada that discusses RV Events.) So it is important to be prepared. It is wise to discuss a plan for a quick exit

FYI we store important papers that are not necessarily valuable in our freezer. Yes it is the first place a crook would look but it is this is the last place to burn. These are moved to a cloth bag that sits by the door while we are on the move. In the event of a fire I try to leash the dogs and find a place outside - plus I grab the bag and my purse on the way. If it is safe I will put them into the car and immediately attempt to disconnect the car. John grabs the extinguisher(s) to deal with the fire as best he can. Yes things happen fast and hopefully we will have time for all ‘four-of-us’ to safely survive. With luck, a passerby will call for help and things will be under control until the Fire department arrives.

NOTE: Last week I received an email wondering if Braemer Valley RV Park (our summer home in Woodstock Ontario Canada) allowed bonfires. The answer is no, because the ground ia mainly composed of Peat Moss. BUT there is a CENTRAL FIRE PIT behind the Chalet that anyone can use.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

FADING BRAKES CAN CAUSE ACCIDENTS – Be extra careful when climbing and descending hills and mountains. This frightening story was featured on the RV Travel Weekly newsletter. In a word Brake fade can kill you!!!.

Always gear down to climb a hill and use one gear lower when descending it. Try to limit the times you use your brakes while descending – let your engine do the work. For more info, Watch this video on the above accident.

NOTE: On our LUXOR (DP) we added a Pac Brake for a bit of piece of mind. Your mechanics will have to verify if it can be added to a gas engine.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

RV MANUFACTURING DIFFERENCES - A second video in this newsletter is by coachman and it highlights the advantages of their laminated walls. Worth looking at – other RV’s may have similar construction but it was an interesting comparison – especially if a new unit is on the horizon.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

TORNADOS – WHAT TO DO? With the bad weather that is surfacing earlier than usual and in no particular area – our friend Tom shared these links on “What to do?” when RVers encounter a Tornado AND “How to cope?” Basically DO NOT try to outrun such a weather disturbance. But DO get out of the RV and try to find a deep ditch to hide. Apparently the girders on an Overpass may be very dangerous places to seek shelter because of the intensity of the wind that travels under it. Also be alert of SEVERE THUNDERSTOR WARNING (especially in Cda). They can be a warning for heavy rain, hail, severe winds and the threat of a Tornado.

The several links below explain what RVers should do when Tornados are near. Each of these Five links are directed to RVers and each is definitely worth reading. Here: and here and here; and here; and here

IT IS FUN BEING MOM AND DAD AGAIN - Newsy Portion

Diary published weekly since 2001

Hi Everyone: We finally have two more 4-legged ‘kids’ in this house again. We picked them up last WEDNESDAY - they are so beautiful. Someone asked me why we do not get puppies – simple, I make a good grandma but not so hot as a mother. These two – show dog MATILDA (8-years old), and her 4-year old DAUGHTER BRATILDA have never lived anywhere but as special part time housedogs at our breeder. Carol is a breeder of award winning show dogs and Dr. Mom and Grandma too. She sometimes keeps her special babies around until the right adoptive home comes along. She has had these two slated for us when our 18-year old Maddie died 2-years ago. BUT at that point Katie did not want a buddy so all our animals would have been very unhappy if they were split up – 3-dogs is too much for us. We did that about 10 years ago and don’t wish a repeat.

Mom Matilda (8-yrs old)

Her Kid Bratilda (4-yrs old)

Although we still miss Katie big time we now have two more to fill the hole. They are so good in the car – they are still travelling in their cage, but eventually they’ll be happy just in the backseat. These two are also very quiet and extra loveable – when they are picked up they mould themselves to us. We have not left them alone as yet – probably won’t do so often until it gets too hot in the car to take them with us. I really hope to post some Picassa pictures tomorrow.

OUR WEEK HAS BEEN VERY EVENTFUL

Last MONDAY while in London for my LA check-in and running errands we got a call mid morning from great Newfi friends, Dave and Val. They were in London for a week visiting family – thankfully us too. We had so much to share because this winter these two-toured Colonial Mexico & the Baja in great detail – they ventured to the tip of that fascinating country. Hearing their stories brought many pleasant memories of our 7-years flooding back to us. They had a ball and in many ways we still miss all the fantastic experiences we enjoyed during our early RV Travels south of the USA.

An extended lunch at London’s Family Circle was a great spot to catch-up. Thanks guys for including a visit before you continue to your home in NFLD to settle down for a few months. You’ve had a superior winter and that is what matters most - till next time.

TUESDAY Park excitement was a very small FIRE IN THE PARK MODEL across from us. Birds had built a nest in an outside porch light – the shade was damaged over the winter. When the light was accidentally left in the ‘on’ position, the nest caught fire. Many neighbours brought their small extinguishers over but NO ONE knew how to use them. John grabbed our big one and we both said a prayer that is would work.

We have had this one for a while and neglectfully we hadn’t checked it, nor reversed it to keep the solution from ‘packing’. John’s Navy training re-surfaced and he was able to douse the flames. Think of the damage that could have been caused if this small fire had got away from anyone is scary. LESSONS LEARNED – routinely check the gauges on your extinguisher(s). Maybe the fire department or an extinguisher store could periodically have a look at them. None of us know when they will be needed and to have one in your RV that doesn’t work is of no value. Maybe there is a refresher course nearby

WEDNESDAY we set out on a 2-hour (one-way) trip to pick up the kids – we have dealt with Braaehaus Kennel since 1980 – Carol has a right to be proud of her quality bloodlines. To break up the trip, we stopped for a short visit with Patty and Peter Hughes our first RV Dealer in Orangeville, ON. Hughes RV 1-866-344-8944 now features an extensively stocked RV store as well as they specialize in ‘Timely White Glove RV Service’ on any type of RV. They are also a very successful consignment dealer. FYI my books are now available in their store over the summer. We picked up our new kids at noon. After a short get-acquainted visit, acquiring a few supplies plus a loner Ex-, we headed home - they were perfect angels all the way. We have a large grassy field behind our LUXOR that they love to run in. Brattie is still not comfortable ‘walking’ on a leash, but she loves to chase her mom so she is getting a lot of valuable exercise. She is a bit on the chunky side so this outside activity several times a day is good for her–us too!

THURSDAY we stayed home to ‘bond’ plus I finally got the spreadsheet for our TAXES completed. It seemed to take me forever this year and I do not know why. At any rate our accountant has it in his office. I do not know how to do the taxes so they will call us when this stage is completed. Hopefully we will get a bit of a refund in a few weeks.

FRIDAY, all four of us departed for another 2-hour drive to deliver the tax info. Spring is so beautiful. We enjoyed a lunch picnic in the Hanover Park to watch the mighty Saugeen River flow by. There was considerable water sitting in the park grassland. We used to camp at this park in our early days while we were visiting John’s Aunt Rita.

In Hanover we stopped at CINDY’S FLOWERS & GIFTS 1-800-368-8075 to pick up the Floral Saddle for the extra large Ahren’s Family headstone at the town cemetery. One more time Cindy outdid herself refurbishing last years huge display and she does it for such a very low cost. Thanks again for caring Cindy.

By the way GAS/FUEL costs fluctuate in this country as well as south of the border. On our way to Hanover we bought some at 1.19 per litre x 3.7 = $4.40 Cdn x .97 US Exch = $4.27 per gal. Still high, but less than yesterday – when we went a bit further north it was only $1.14 per litre (imagine I say only) x 3.7 = $4.21 C$ for US gal x .97 Exch = $4.09. However today in Woodstock it was $1.24 per litre so go figure – guess we just have to grin and bear it. Diesel was $1.19 today in Woodstock but not sure what it was earlier.

SATURDAY I usually begin this post early, but this morning we headed to the WOODSTOCK FARMERS MARKET to get some mums to border our front porch – a donation by Tina and Adrian – owners of this great park. I do not maintain flowers easily but as long as we keep them watered hopefully they will keep growing. They at least look good for today.

Tonight Braemar Valley is hosting their “WELCOME BACK PARTY”. I really want to get this post out but we also want to know our neighbours and fellow park members a bit better. So forgive me for taking the time to play a bit. If this is late you will know why.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

FINAL THOUGHTS

Our busy summer has started out on a very positive track. We are really enjoying being in this park. Woodstock is rapidly growing and London is only 50 km (25 miles) away. We go into that city twice a week so I can check into LA Weightloss. I am still loosing but I’m not enjoying a rapid decrease, that’s for sure. Have a great summer everyone and we sure hope all the bad weather has gone away for good – although they are calling for a cold 3-4 days this week in our neck of the woods. Even with the high gas/fuel prices “RV Living is the Freedom Lifestyle like no other”. Find a way to get out and enjoy, P&J

TIPS & PROMOS Issue 16

TIPS THIS WEEK

We have no paved patio at Breamer Valley and the grassy surface is a slight bit uneven. Since we move from time to time we also do not want to build a deck. So we purchased 3 packs of 1/2" foam INTERLOCKING 24” SQUARES designed to use in a kids room or for exhibitors during RV shows, or an office in a house or a workshop in a garage etc. They are pearl gray on one side and each square is one-of-four colours on the other – the gray looks real good. They fit together like a giant puzzle to make a good patio base. They may kill the grass but we’re here all summer so it is not a major consideration. If we’d built a deck, it would probably kill the grass anyway. The squares are a good alternative for some situations. The soft spongy feel adds a patio surface over level but somewhat uneven ground. For travel they stack into a 24” lightweight square between uses.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As of 8 Apr, FLYING J in Ohio announced they would again accept VISA CARDS AT THE PUMP FOR GAS/FUEL. Their new gas/fuel discount program is also pretty good. We spent enough in Apr to earn 5cents per unit off our following month fuel. Discounts apply to the next month we fuel our coach – for us that’s June. The Car Card works differently than the RV Card. A few coffees and an occasional meal worked wonders to establish good future point. Prices the past week have risen here – same as in the USA. Propane is $3.69 p/gal.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Just for info – according to DISCOVER, their CARDS are now accepted in some places in Canada – not all at this point.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

ACCESSING ANALOGUE TV STATIONS using your Winegard Batwing Antenna (regular local TV stations) will be difficult after 17 FEB 2009. According to this Forum thread that’s featured in the RVTravel.com newsletter, you will need to have to add a digital tuner or a conversion box after that date. Two $40.00 coupons are available to each American household to offset the cost. This is still fairly complex for us non-tech people, so it is worth checking out these websites to slowly let it sink in.

According to the Digital TV Website Consumers who receive free broadcast television signals through antennas on television sets with analog tuners – and who don’t subscribe to cable, satellite or a telephone company service provider – are the only ones affected.

Viewers who connect via cable, satellite or telephone company TV services should NOT see any change, nor should they need to upgrade. Go to www.dtv.gov/ - 1-888-225-5322.
CANADIANS can read the full story HERE on how they will be affected – Canada doesn’t switch till 31 AUG 2011, but if you watch US programs change occurs as of Feb 17 2009

PROMOS THIS WEEK

RISING GAS/FUEL PRICES on both sides of the border and economic downturns have hurt various parts of the RV Industry. Not long ago National RV closed along with several others that are surfacing each week. (I am not sure of ALL companies affected).

Next week Winnebago is temporarily shutting down plants in Forest City, Hampton and Charles City, Iowa, although one production line will stay open in Charles City. In March, Winnebago laid off 200 employees – it employs about 3,000 at all its plants.

RV maker Western Recreational Vehicles Inc. of Yakima, Wash. has closed, leaving 220 employees without work. On the good side of things a few other manufacturers are opening up new lines – a Cdn company from BC will soon move to Yakima, WA. One thing is certain; nothing in this world exists without change. When one door closes another frequently opens – if we can wait long enough. One good point – due to a strong Cdn $$, prices on RV’s sold in Cda have lowered, making them more appealing. It is tough on sellers of private sales but great for the consumer

SPRING HAS SPRUNG IN ONTARIO - Newsy Part Issue 16

Diary published weekly since 2001

Hi Everyone: At least in Ontario it appears as though “Spring Has Finally Sprung” with warm bright sunshiny days and early flowers poking their heads above ground. It is such a pretty time of year watching everything ‘wake up’. Our summer home, Braemar Valley RV Park is located about 7 miles (14 km) from Woodstock in the beautiful spacious Valley of the former Oxford County Ski Club. When we are driving to access different errands in London and Woodstock, it is so peaceful to see the farmers working their fields at such a glorious time of year. The lush green grasslands resemble giant quality indoor/outdoor carpet. The trees are also coming to life with an overload of buds. Apparently western Canada is still undergoing undesirable end-of-season snowstorms with frigid temps. Parts in the east have had a few rain days – nice ones too; so we are extremely thankful for small mercies. The entire weekend is supposed to be like this. I am even wrote a portion of this Diary outside on the picnic table.

OUR WEEK IN REVIEW

We crossed the border last SUNDAY at Detroit/Windsor. There were detours and construction everywhere. Part of I-75 was even closed right after the bridge entry to Canada – detours directed drivers towards the northwest. In a word it was a mess, plus the roads from northern Ohio to the Michigan border were also less than perfect, but after the winter this area went through, I guess it is understandable.

On a positive note, our actual crossing was the most basic we have ever experienced. John had a file ready with invoice copies of our costly winter maintenance ready to share (emergencies are allowed duty-free). He did not even want to see our Passports. He asked us “How many were in the coach”? “How much did we buy?” (After we have been away for the winter we round our spending off to $8-$900. between the two of us – unless we buy big-ticket items such as a computer etc). His next comment threw us off guard – all he said was “ OK, have a good day – you can go now!” We said Thanks and took off for the London Flying J before he changed his mind.

We spent the night at the FLYING J because we had an appointment MONDAY with our dealer at FOREST CITY RV, north London (519) 268-3951. They are a Winnebago dealer plus they are so talented. We did not trust that our Propane tank was properly secured. Frieghtliner indicated the bolts ERS used were not heavy enough and Forest City agreed. They added proper heavy-duty bolts and took our step apart so they can find the parts to fit. Yes, it is partly a Kwickie Step but to make it look fancy, Winnebago modified it. No big deal because the one we are using now works great – when they find all the parts we will return. I also could not believe it but – an added plus to their talent – labour rate is only $72.00 p/hour.

We took advantage of the appointment time to drive to nearby Stratford to PICK UP OVER A MONTHS MAIL and on our return; the LUXOR was ready to roll. We then checked into our summer home. BRAEMAR VALLEY RV PARK in Woodstock (1-519-462-2977) is a small very friendly 50+-retirement community with 77-spaces – 17 expansive sites are open to visiting and seasonal RVers. 2007 overnight rate was only $15.00. Seasonal is also well below the general average. Braemar Valley is the only park in Ontario that has Reverse Osmosis drinking water. The majority of residences are a variety of park models and manufactured homes. Very pretty setting in a serene valley surrounded by picturesque hills, trees and extensive hiking trails. Their Club House is the original quaint and comfy 2-story Ski Chalet with a weight room and lounge, fireplace as well as an attractive large room for functions. The laundry works on the honour system and the fenced-in swimming pool offers sense of security – great place for park gatherings.

It has been a BUSY WEEK running errands, and getting set up. John has been slowly eliminating tasks in his job-jar, such as reinforcing the shed (This park endured a rare flood early April because the city drains placed in the ground were still frozen when the snow melted – Winter residents were evacuated by boat). He also spent considerable time raking the grass – great exercise. It just felt so good to be outside on a perfect day.

I am working on the final stages (hopefully) of putting together our TAX SPREADSHEET to take to our Finance Consultant Team next Thursday. I still have about two more days work before I will have all the info in the right spot. FYI, We Cdns can wait till the end of April to file. I do not know how to do taxes so we put it all our income and expenses on a spreadsheet and the team goes from there. At least now I know why we never have any excess cash flow – we spend it all. Putting it on paper we can see where it went.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

FINAL THOUGHTS

Hooray!!! On Tuesday we bring home our new to us 4-LEGGED KIDS. It is a long drive to our breeder, but they are ready and so are we. It will feel so good to have ‘kids’ in this house again. We know it will be a big transition – since we have never acquired two at one time. Good thing we are not moving much this summer – so they can get used to our home environment before they must become accustomed to ‘life on the move’.

It is time to go for now. As our friend Dennis says, “We started with nothing and we still have most of it left”. Enjoy the wonders of spring – even the rare snowstorm. It will be over soon. Camping season is just around the corner. Those still on the move please drive safe. P&J

TIPS AND PROMOS Issue 15

TIPS THIS WEEK Issue 15

While comparing LUXORS, Jim shared a neat tip he uses to KEEP THINGS SECURE IN HIS MEDICINE CABINET. I have relayed in the past that John and I attach a piece of PLEXI-GLASS IN FRONT OF SHELF to keep things in place during a rough trip. As Fulltimers we have more ‘stuff’ in our cabinets than he does – our bottles do not move. But to keep things where Jim and Glenna place them, he cut a piece of EGGSHELL FOAM TO SIT SNUGLY ON THE SHELF. In the inclinations he cut out circles for each bottle to fit into. Works great if your medicine cabinet is not jam-packed. This just proves that all tips do not work for everyone.

Jim prefers to CONTROL PROJECTILES after reading an article of a sink cover that slammed into a windshield during a quick stop. As a precaution he built a special holder in the closet for his covers while he drives down the road. Many RVers are concerned with this fact. It is something everything should think about. John and I secure big things, but even in our coach there are many little things that do not move around because most are on non-skid surfaces, but a number of these items could??? fly through the air in a sudden change of speed. Just be cautious of what you are carrying – will it stay put?

WEATHER REPORTS – YUK!!!

WEATHER REPORTS – YUK!!! Issue 15

Diary published weekly since 2001
Read a different version
Here - Be sure to also visit RV Parks

Hi Guys: We expect to cross the border on SUNDAY. What an eventful week we’ve had. According to weather.com and our weather radio reports, we expected to have a very windy, stormy and wet drive north throughout the entire week. I am happy to report other than our last hour driving in Kentucky on Friday; the entire route has been dry, sunny (a few clouds) and picturesque for the most part. I started this during Saturday’s journey, and although it is cloudy and quite windy, thankfully we still have no rain. We prepared for and expected a severe thunderstorm in Lexington, Kentucky Fri evening but – good news is it missed us. At 2:30 we checked into Flying J at Beaverdam, Ohio for the night, I paid for a day of WiFi. Hopefully this week’s blurb will be posted tonight. We are so happy that the Good Lord and our Guardian Angels continue to travel with us.

A few days ago an RV friend asked me what we did about weather reports that forecasted extreme storms – they were considering extending their stay in Virginia to wait out the weather. John and I listen to these reports and take heed of impending problems, but if possible, we set out as planned, but a bit earlier to get a head start on whatever we may find. However we assess each situation as it presents itself. A few years ago we got off the road at noon one day because the rain was so heavy we could not see and the next day we checked into another campground at noon because the wind was so intense. If no parks were open en route we have no qualms about spending the night in a motel room if needed. It also may be possible to park the LUXOR in their parking lot and pay a small plug-in fee. Soooo what I am saying is – be mindful of what the ‘experts’ are saying, but cautiously follow your plans because weather constantly changes and the reports are usually for static locations – but we RVers move from A-B and may avoid the bad stuff.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

WEEK IN REVIEW

We checked out of our extended stay in Fair Play, SC on MONDAY for the Freightliner Service Centre in Gaffney, SC in preparation for an appointment early TUESDAY morning. No other place we’ve been to puts our LUXOR on a lift to give it a bumper-to-bumper comprehensive ‘Medical’. Over the years we’ve paid very little in chassis updates to our 13-year old MH, but this time a number of things reached the ‘should-be-changed’ category – such as shocks, hoses, tie rod ends, etc. Of course we had routine generator maintenance and they changed all fluids. The techs that built our LUXOR at Gaffney now provide service to her. Because they know this machine so well, we feel comfortable in their diagnosis. Parts they had in stock were changed, plus we have a list of part numbers of what else needs attention.

The new Freightliner Chassis Service Centre is state of the art – 6-bays, a 20-space campground (50Amp), elaborate waiting room with WiFi; 2-day training course on FL Chassis and much more adds to a pleasant stay. At days end, when possible the techs put the coaches back together and return them to your reserved RV space – no charge to camp. Everyone is waiting for service, so each evening a group gather for Happy Hour – a regular party atmosphere. Best part is the hourly rate is only $85.00 and FCOC (Freightliner Chassis Owners Club) members receive an additional 5% off parts and labour. After two long days, our invoice was extensive, but we now know exactly what future requirement we need and we have time to decide if we can get it done in Ontario or return to Gaffney in the fall. Our excursions are also minimal this year, so we may wait till spring for her next annual ‘Medical’.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

TOUCHING BASE WITH ANOTHER LUXOR

THURSDAY morning we were invited to stop at the Virginia Welcome Centre to compare notes with Jim and Glenna – fellow ‘95 LUXOR owners. These two are not Fulltimers but they do like to travel. I am envious - their coach is immaculate – where ours needs a major cleaning if we ever stop long enough. Jim and Glenna plus John and I each made extensive modifications but they’re very individual updates to suit our whims. It was interesting to see these coaches side-by-side. Our hosts also took us on a tour of MOUNT AIRY. The town of MAYBERRY in the Andy Griffith series of the 60’s is patterned after life as it was in Andy’s hometown of Mount Airy, North Carolina.

It was fun to relive the era of Aunt Bea; Goober; Barney; Floyd’s Barber Shop and to see the birthplace of Andy. We drove past so many icons from that popular TV Show. A few highlights were Barney’s Cop Car and Emmett’s Fix-it Truck that were parked in front of a room full of Aunt Bea’s memorabilia at the Mayberry Motor Inn. Our hosts relayed interesting story after story. The famous Snappy Lunch was closed, so we enjoyed a tasty meal at Leon’s Burger Express on Main Street. Owners, Vickie and Paul serve tasty meals at old-fashioned prices – John said his meatloaf was the best he had since he was a kid. More info HERE

The new full-facility modern Mayberry Campground is suitable for ‘Big Rigs’. It is worth a stop for sure. . Mount Airy is also home to the world’s largest ‘open face’ Granite Quarry. For the past 100 years there has been no need to dig for this valuable super strength commodity. It’s stronger than pavement and not affected by salt. Numerous buildings around town and throughout North America are constructed of this special granite. Thanks guys for being such great hosts.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

OUR TRIP CONTINUED to Fort Chiswell RV Park (276) 637-6868 near Wytheville, VA – a definite 5-star establishment. This well laid-out park is easy access in; and to the sites; with free WiFi/Cable; long pull-thrus, 50 Amps, etc. Although it is a Good Sam park ALL visitors receive the 10% discount. $29.50.

FRIDAY was travel through West Virginia to overnight in Lexington, Kentucky. Toll cost in WV was only $6.00. We have not come via hwy 77 and hwy 64 previously and although the terrain was very beautiful, we encountered more hills through the West Virginia Mountains than we expected. The roads were good for the most part and bright sunshine made for a pretty drive. Next stop was the spacious Kentucky Horse Park (800) 678-8813 This is a full facility destination park that offers numerous amenities and activities. Sites are spacious 2-way back-in style. $22.00 p/night.

We chose not to set the Dish up due to very high winds, plus the park promoted a new WiFi system. But WOW – it was costly – $2.45 for 2-hours and a whopping $14.95 per day. I also had problems connecting to their system. My next plan was to connect with the Cell – it too was unsuccessful. Thanks to an extended call with Ositech Tech Service (maker of my charger/PC connection cord) Bob discovered the modem on John’s cell is no longer functional – my new phone does not have the Data-connect capabilities. Sooo I took the night off of email. When I logged on today, SATURDAY, at the Flying J in Beaverdam, Ohio I had 195 in my Inbox – I managed to delete them down to 25 that need attention after the Diary goes out.

SMALL REQUEST – if anyone has, or knows the whereabouts of a Motorola E815e phone not being used – please let me know so I can negotiate a ‘sale’. Verizon lists this great phone as out-of-service but it is the only one our computer attachments connect to.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

FINAL THOUGHTS

We leave Beaverdam, Ohio at the Flying J SUNDAY morning en route to the border at Detroit/Windsor (convenient but not my favourite crossing). We will overnight at London Flying J. MONDAY we have an appointment at our dealer to order parts for our step-motor and for them to add a strap to our propane tank. We have piece of mind that it will stay put in the future. We’ll then check into our park in Woodstock for the next few months. It will feel good to stay put for a while – 5 weeks ago we left Alamo, Texas. It’s been quite the trip to say the least. So happy the storms stayed away from us. I’ll close this week with a neat sign we saw in Ohio – “Slow down for the cone zone”. Travel safe all. P&J

MAL*MART BANNERS on RVLiving.net lead to their FANTASTIC COMPREHENSIVE ON-LINE STORE. If readers buy anything through these banners – our website receives a small bonus. John and I bought several items through this site at considerable savings, plus by using their ‘site to store’ feature we also saved all shipping costs. Picking our purchases up at a local Wal*Mart added a most convenient option. When John recently bought his bike on-line, the store even put it together for us at no cost. I realize that many Cdn Snow birds will soon return to Canada but just for info reference this service next winter – a Cdn Credit Cards is not accepted. However by simply buying a store card with your Cdn Credit Card – you can use that card to pay for your purchase. Begin HERE.

I frequently discuss that we save CAMPING COSTS by staying a Discount Camping Spots. Many clubs have parks in both Canada and the USA. If you stay four nights at any one of these member parks you begin to save money big time. Sometimes extra features such as WiFi or Cable TV or 50 Amp power may cost an additional small fee. Annual membership is generally less than $50.

**** Those who would like info covering our inexpensive COAST TO COAST (C2C) & RESORTS PARKS INTERNATIONAL (RPI) Membership Parks - feel free to send me an email for details. We only paid minimal for OUR HOME PARK with low annual dues – Annual Membership Fees in these two clubs is low as well.

**** Frequently John and I stay at PASSPORT AMERICA Member Parks at a 50% discount. Details HERE. Some Blackout dates may apply.

**** John and I are also members of HAPPY CAMPER CLUB – they too have over a 1000 parks in both countries that offer 50% discounts. Some Blackout dates may apply HERE as well.

**** We also stay at a variety of parks with RECREATION USA. Their parks have NO blackout dates. If the park has a site open – members can stay for $10.00 per night. Current, updated locations of their parks are ALL ON-LINE. Rec USA parks are in the lower 42 states.

**** RECREATION USA has recently launched a new 25% DISCOUNT CLUB at parks that cater to Big Rigs. Many 10% discounts are available at numerous parks but 25% increases the discounts even more. For a limited time, Membership in either club includes discounts at parks in the additional club. Details HERE Have a good week. P&J

Hi Everyone: Hope those heading north enjoy a safe journey and those in the north we really hope your mega winter snow will soon depart. The weather channel in Ontario report spring is coming but I have resigned myself that the ground may still be white by the time we arrive sometime next weekend. As long as the roads are clear, we will be happy with white ground. We have enjoyed an extremely relaxing time while we unwound this week.

I made fantastic progress on a magazine story and miscellaneous other tasks – John is gradually shortening his job jar list. Now if this vast amount of rain in South Carolina and on our route north will stop, life will be perfect. But we really have not had to put up with much rain the past few months - guess we will never be satisfied, Temperatures so far have been quite moderate – no flannel sheets needed as yet, however our trip north looks like it too may be wet. Our fireplace on low is keeping things comfortable.

WEEK IN REVIEW

MONDAY
was a short travel day of a few hundred miles and we stopped in Perry at Twin Oaks campground for the night. This park is a members of many discount park systems and our overnight rate (Passport Am)- $15.00. Twin Oaks is also a very well designed park with long pull-thru’s that fill up fast – reservations are recommended. Free WiFi and cable are part of their numerous amenities. They also offer a wide variety of things to keep their customers occupied. However WiFi signal was stronger in some areas park than it was in our site. Contact info HERE 478 987 9361.

TUESDAY we booked into Carolina Landing Preserve in Fair Play, SC (RPI/ Thousand Trails/NACO Membership parks at $10.00 per night). What a beautiful layout – because it is built on hills, all sites are tiered. To simplify navigation all roads and sites are fully paved. These roads resembled fast flowing rivers during our heavy rain on Friday and Saturday. Carolina Landing is situated in a scenic wooded area, but park staff has removed some of their trees - thankfully none that are left interfered with our satellite reception. They too offer every amenity imaginable and mega activities to keep their members busy – but John and I did not participate in much this week. I needed catch-up time after our busy few weeks of rallies and visiting. However we highly recommend this park to other members. Contact info HERE– (864 972 9892)

I repeat this point often. By staying at discount or membership campgrounds, it helps to stretch our travel dollars. If you want info reference any of these clubs – Coast to Coast, (RPI) Resorts Parks International, or Passport Am., Happy Camper or Rec USA, please send me an email. Simply put, cutting camping costs helps us diffuse fluctuating gas/fuel prices. Thankfully, diesel is still under $4.00 per gallon – sometimes as low as $3.87 p/gal. (In South Carolina, gas is floating around $3.07 p/gal).

All work and no play makes for a dull life, so FRIDAY we drove the 100+ mile scenic Highway 11 from Fair Play to Gaffney. What an interesting drive – although it will be more picturesque a few months from now when all the trees sport their brilliant foliage. Fields were ploughed/planted just waiting for the crops to grow. Numerous peach trees orchards proudly showed off their pink blossoms. The diverse form of residences on this route added interest to the drive. They ranged from high-end classy elaborate log homes to the basic mobile home variety – several communities punctuated the gently hilly route to Gaffney – the highway was super although it looked a bit isolated.

One point we couldn’t help but notice – every 15 miles or so there was another large church – the majority were Baptist. We are not sure where all the people live that would fill this many buildings each Sunday. Highway 11 ends at the new Freightliner Campus and Maintenance Center in Gaffney. Our LUXOR was manufactured in Gaffney so whenever possible we return her to the techs that built her for her annual ‘medical’. Freightliner’s new State of the Art Facility and their 20 space campground with electric hook-ups is superior, but we will share more on that service call next issue.

While in Gaffney we took time for our last major Wal*Mart ‘fix’ before Cda. I really think I should buy shares in that company – we spend so much in their stores everywhere.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Our last few days of our winter away are always a bit sad. We had so much fun this season, but many exciting things will be happening in Canada as well – especially when we bring our new 4-legged kids home. This is an exciting time of year for RVers who spent the last few months in the north. It is time to bring your ‘getaway machine’ to life so you too can go the outside world. Take care everyone – travel safe. P&J
